Has Clemson football become soft?

There did not seem to be that "smashmouth" style on the team this year; on either side of the ball or at the coaching/coordinator level. Nobody like CW, Skalsi, Bouleware, Coach V, some of the nasty O line from past years. After every game it seemed like players and coaches said things like, "we had to take what they gave us", "they did somethings we did not anticipate", "we just could not get established", "we could not get off the field".

Meanwhile over at UGA, Kirby lights them up with, "let's go out there and kick their f'ing arses. Look across the line and kill your opponent's will. Make him want to get on the bus and leave. Impose your will and destroy him". A bunch of 20 years olds got fired up by that on Monday and wend out and did just that.

Seems like they have a different approach right now.

I can't imagine hearing those words come out of Dabo's mouth. Or hiring someone else to do it. Didn't sound very God-like.

Rewatch the ND game, it will answer your question.***

Clemson is not physically soft because we had one team in 2022 to whoop our behinds.

We had deer in the headlights syndrome starting with our first possession of the game.

We start at our 25 yard line, first and 10.

First play: Successful WR pass on left flat; called back for holding by a WR.

Second play: Same result as first play.

It is now first and 27.

Mix of pass and run plays don’t do zilch.

Punt … blocked and returned for TD.

On that night, it was like Hitler through France. Shock and awe.

The rest of the year, however, we played everyone without any more ‘shocked into submission’ stuff.

Y’all just leave the building and go elsewhere and never ever come back.
That smash mouth enough for you big bad a$$ couch dwellers?
You are pathetic crybabies - go pull for Kirby - nobody cares what you whine about next, beyond the pathetic trolls on here.
And take 40% of the rest of Tnet - whiny little crybabies.
Excuse me, gotta puke…softly of course.
I wish each person claiming this nonsense had to put on pads ONE TIME and practice ONE TIME. You couldn’t take 5 min out there. I bet you couldn’t run 100 yards. You must be overcompensating for playing with your sister’s Barbie Dolls as children.
Shut up and then SHUT UP!

I think we have a lot of talent to work with but for me, it starts with the playbook and our schemes. We need to match our talent and what we do well with a playbook that takes advantage of those skills. Are we tempo? Are we more run-pass or pass-run? Are we going to be a 2 TE set, are we going to throw more down the middle? Same kinds of questions on defense around blitz packages, secondary, and alignment.

I can't help but feel like our playbook needs a refresh. It seems like we may be a little too easy to plan against because we have become a bit predictable. I really hope this is a focus as we prepare for 2023.

Yes indeed, we need to align the playbook with the skills and capabilities of our players.

The playbook must also adjust each week based on the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition.

Syracuse never could consistently stop the run. Except for times when they super-stacked the box, a majority of running plays with an occasional deep shot makes sense.

UNC could not defend the pass. Play calling should be pass oriented if pass defense is UNC’s fundamental weakness for 2023.

Xxxxxxxxxx

In 2022, we were indeed very predictable. It was obvious to all of our opponents after the first half of the year that we strongly preferred the run game over the pass game.

Clemson football has not become soft.

UGA’s OL talent is like the Clubber Lang character from the old Rocky movies.

We do a great job with S&C for the players that sign with us, but not all OL signees arrive on campus like a bunch of Godzillas.

I don’t agree we were soft, but we also had few targeting….

Dabo is too busy making fishers of men these days.

What am I missing here?

Jan 11, 2023, 4:10 PM

Are we talking mentally soft or physically soft or both? If we are taking smash mouth physically tough our offense has never been that under Dabo. So we didn’t become soft we’ve always been soft.

Now defense is a different story. I don’t think we’ve become soft there but it’s too early to tell. I think it’s more of a new coordinator issue. I do think though we were more “bend but don’t break” this year compared to how we imposed our will on teams under BV, but we had plenty of those BBDB games under BV so I think it’s too early to say for certain.
