Clemson "going downhill"?

10

Jan 14, 2023, 11:11 AM

It's bizarre to me how some haters (including some "fans") are so down on a team with 10 wins and a #3 ranking, 10 wins and a #14 ranking, and 11 wins with a #13 ranking since 2020. No, we haven't been natty contenders for the last two seasons, but it's not like this type of record is commonplace.

The fact is, during our "slide", among P5 Clemson is 3rd in wins in the country, during our "slide". THIRD.

Woe is us.

1. UGA = 37-3
2. Alabama = 37-4
3. Clemson = 31-8
4. Notre Dame = 30-8
5. Ohio State = 29-5
6. Michigan = 27-7
7. Oklahoma St = 27-11
8. Oklahoma = 26-11
9. Pitt = 26-12
10. Oregon = 24-10

Let's Go Tigers! Silence the haters!

Would you consider Alabama going downhill with losses to Usc and ND, and teams like NC State and WF taking you to overtime?

When comparing it to 2018 most definitely but the truth is it will not be like that every year. Lot of variables in play.

Alabama is 2nd. We're 3rd.

Please buddy, you're trying way too hard.

I don't recall how we ended up winning in OT over #10 NCSU.

Can you refresh my memory?

By the way, we all know uSC was a complete debacle, Wake was a quality win, and ND isn't a POS team. They're 4th in wins over the last 3 years. Beat uSC and we're in the playoffs and finish in the top 4.

Which begs the question……”why are half of the top 10 teams from the SEC, for 4 months, every year”?

Money, money and then more money.

Always good for business when you keep your product propped up. If one SEC teams loses to another SEC team it’s normally not as big of a deal seeing 7-8 will be in the top 25.

Bama loses to a team that SC demolished and they were very close at getting a pass into the playoff.

Are you at all familiar with the recent caliber of football played in the ACC outside of Clemson? We peaked when the other longstanding powers were cratering; specifically FSU. Feel free to add quotes around my "fan" designation, but you had better add them to Dabo's too. Because he certainly felt we we were going "downhill" too and (finally) took some action this week to hopefully remedy it.

Please cite Dabo's "going downhill" comments, and BTW (SoS)

2022: 21st
2021: 11th
2020: 3rd

Not chopped liver.

We're 3rd, and it's got nothing to do with relative schedules. Two seasons under a broken QB, the most critical position on the field.

We have NOT fallen from the upper echelon.

I think anybody with an ounce of critical thinking skills, including Dabo, knows that we are not currently competitive at the elite levels right now. Said another way, we are a good team, not a great team. Dabo apparently wants to be great again - thankfully. That is refreshing after we basically squandered a championship level Defense for two years on an dramatically declining and increasingly stale offense. If you don't agree with me, then I ask you to explain our recent coaching changes.

Were we "elite" the last two seasons, as in overall? No. But being 3rd in the country over the last 3 years isn't falling apart either.

Look at this way, we were elite in 2020.

We lost by 7 to the 2021 national champs due to an inept QB that gave away the game's only TD. A good QB, and it's highly possible our D holds them to 3 points, and we win. We had similar QB performances against NCSU and Pitt, including the only time in my life I've ever seen a shovel pass intercepted for a TD. A good QB in those two games, and I like our chances to make the playoffs and finish in the top 4.

In 2022, we were 8-0 before getting ambushed against ND. I'm gonna call that a loss regardless. However, no way in Hades do we lose to the chickens with a good QB. Beat the chickens, and we're in the playoffs again with another top 4 finish.

A good QB, and we finish in the top 4 for those two years and make it in the top 4 for a nation leading 8 straight years.

We were handcuffed at QB. It all changes with a good QB, and the chicken littles have nothing to worry about. It's basically undeniable we were that close.

And too, the offense did not decline for 3 straight years. In 2020 we had the most productive passing season in Clemson history. In 2021 we were terrible, but in 2022 we made a significant jump, albeit it wasn't enough.

We're 3rd in wins over the last "downfall" seasons, and a very strong argument can be made it was tied to being handicapped at the most important position on the field. You can allege we had issues here and there or whatever, but the fact remains we were very close to making the playoffs the last two seasons, especially this year where a FG against the chickens would have gotten us there.

I'm optimistic. I think we're not as far off as some allege. I'm thinking a trip back to the playoffs in 2023 is a nearly sure thing. We're okay!

Natty2023.
