I tried axe throwing for the first time

Had to go to a function Saturday night.
I don't get the appeal. The novelty seemed to wear off with everyone else pretty quick, too. I sucked at it, naturally, at first, but unlike some other activities, I didn't feel inspired to get better. Most throws bounced back, so it was walk to the axe, bend over to pick it up, throw it again, walk over to pick it up, bend over, repeat.
How did the first person to get a business loan for an axe throwing place pull that off at the bank? "Yeah, they're gonna throw around deadly weapons and I'm gonna serve em booze and it'll make money!"
I am also now even more useless in a zombie apocalypse.

But haven't had an urge at all to go do it again. Guy that built the one in Aiken just sold it to someone else. He said the only way they stay afloat is corporate outings. Evidently the Bridgestone Tire plant here does a lot of it, for whatever reason. Uhh, excuse me, I mean "team building."

I went to the 2022 World Axe Throwing Championship -

the novelty of it has died for me, too, haha. It's one of those things that everyone has tried by now, so a bunch of axe throwing venues have closed and leagues are dying down. The competitive aspect will still be there, but the same people (usually the owners or people that work in axe venue, so they practice all the time) win all the tournaments, so that gets boring.
I actually qualified for this year's championship (2023) but it's in Tulsa, OK next weekend, so I declined. Last year's championship was in Appleton, WI in December 2022 - it was cold, but it was actually a pretty cool drinking town (like everywhere in WI apparently), about 40 bars on the main street.

What's the vibe at a competition?

A lot of camaraderie, or does it good pretty heated/intense?
I noticed they had some kind of wood chopping competition going on the TV when I was there, and one of the guys in the top ten was a Clemson dude (didn't get the name). Was that you?
Also, let me know if you're looking to join a zombie apocalypse team.

It's fairly laid back, most everyone knows each other, and there's the drinking

I actually finished in the Top 20, out of like 130 teams, in duals - that's where you and your duals partner throw at the same target, at the same time. So, there's a lot of clanging and destruction of axe handles at times, but it's probably the most fun of the competitions, helps to drink more too - I wonder if axe throwing is the only ESPN sport where people are actively drinking beer during the competition, maybe cornhole too?
I don't know anyone that does the wood chopping/lumberjack stuff, too - axe throwing is more precision, like darts. As long as the zombies stay still at around 12' from me, I'd pretty good at zombie killing, haha.

It's kind of at the same level as duck pin bowling for me. It's not the worst thing I've ever had to do but I'm sure as #### not gonna be the one to bring up doing it that night. Much like golf was for our grandfather's It's basically an excuse to drink and hang out with dudes.

Some friends went there and said they were crazy expensive. Every time I go by it its empty. I don't think it's going to make it.
