a) I have no idea how you'd get 3 down without all of the other words around it being done. It's just not intuitive and I've never seen similar in NYT crosswords to clue one in.
b) want to explain 6 across to me? It's a terrible, terrible clue.

I skipped all the acrosses.
Got 1 down SHARE quickly
Got 2 down HURON quickly, thinking there was only one lake with 5 letters
Skipped 3 down
Got 4 down WAS quickly
Got 6 down CPR quickly
Back to acrosses
1 across, had SH_W, easily SHOW
5 across, had HU_A, easily HULA
6 across, had CAR_S, quickly associated magician in the clue with CARDS. Didn't really read the clue closely either time I encountered it
7 across, had PRO_, easily PROM
Only one square left, 8 across meant nothing to me. 3 Down I had OLDM_, and completed it logically as a word, not even reading the down clue again

Yeah, it's dumb. It refers to the clues, as opposed to the answers.
So 1 across has "Jack" in it
5 across has "king"
6 across has "ace" (in placed)
7 across has "queen"
8 across has "ten" (in tennis)
