I have failed at redneck 101.

Mar 1, 2022, 2:35 PM

Sunday, I raked up a bunch of leaves that were under my shed (RIP), and rather than spend an hour bagging them and toting the bags to the street, I decided I'd burn them. That was about 1:00 on Sunday.

After using a whole bottle of charcoal lighter fluid on it (bought specifically for this purpose), all I have done is smoke out my neighbors, made the back bedroom small like a cigarette, and create a black smoldering mound of leaves that's about 2/3 the size leaf pile I started with.

2 days later it's STILL smoldering (even after it rained Sunday night), so I can't even bag all that mess up and let the yard waste guys haul it off.

What do jounge?

I use diesel. And you gotta get air in there.

Mar 1, 2022, 3:35 PM

mix in some downed limbs that will burn longer and keep the leaves burning, or at least stir that pile o black a little so the burning leaves can get more air.

diesel is great because it is not combustible, sticks to brush, and burns a while. One of those manure forks/pitch forks with about 4-5 tines works good for stirring a pile.

My brush pile always has a lot of limbs in it, and is kinda airy. But I don't burn it very often, so the bottom is pretty much compost. When I light mine, in 3-4 places on a pile about 10 ft in diameter and 5 ft high, it blazes big for 10-15 min. sometimes I spray with the hose to cool it down a little. Then it continues to burn down to a pile of coals and compost for maybe 30 min. At that point, it's 90% gone. That last 10% smolders for a day or two, just a wisp of smoke, even if I soak it down and/or it rains.

I redneck purty good.

I think i'm going to put whatever is left in big yard waste

Mar 1, 2022, 3:39 PM

paper bags.

Then let it sit in the front yard until it combusts. That should look cool in the back of the big truck that carries off that stuff.
