Goodwin vs Venables

Oct 24, 2022, 3:48 PM

Just an observation based on the two coordinators and evolution of the defense:

Venables was brought in to correct the defense of Kevin Steel which was broken by Clemson's move to a up-tempo offense. Steel's Defense stayed on the field too long and couldn't respond when the offense went three and out.

Venables aggressive defense went for the sack or turnover in the open field and buckled down in the red zone. This resulted in turnovers or field goals giving the advantage to the offense.

Goodwin is taking on a completely different team. The offense is built to run the ball and sustain drives. This means a defense who goes for the turnover creates a risk that you give up the big play. Goodwin is relaxing in the midfield and forcing teams to earn it in the red zone.

The defense is the strength of this team and Clemson has more depth than anyone on the schedule. Force teams to sustain drives and settle for field goals. By the 4th quarter the OL is worn out and our Defense is running into the backfield.

I expect some changes as we move into the championship phase and post season. More tempo and aggression will be needed for teams who can match Clemson's depth. Right now I think Wes has this defense right where he wants them.

Agree. I would say intensity as well. That change , combined with missing the energy and intensity of an on field defensive leader (ie Skalski, Wilkins, Boulware) is significant.

And yet, he is thus far "hiding that light under a bushel"

in Okieland. They need to see the raging maniac on the sidelines that they thought they were getting. That would get his team moving in the right direction.

I wouldn't do a direct compare of the two. Venables always gave me the warm fuzzies but keep in mind behind the man could very well have been Goodwin masterminding the calls/adjustments.

I saw a game Saturday where all of the defensive players were within 10 yards of the ball. They were packed in tight thus shutting down a run game. However, your corners better be fast or that WR will get past you for a TD.

Redzone defense is definitely a strength.
I really wish that Goodwin would be more aggressive on 3rd and long though or at least let the DEs rush the outside instead of crash in to collapse the pocket.

He's definitely a second half guy though. First halves this year have me wanting to rip my hair out, second half they look like a different team out there.
