There is a big difference between the top executive and the top operations person, and it’s rare that one person can perform both roles in a large organization. It’s CEO vs COO. Dabo had and still has, I think, a great vision for Clemson. The limiting factor is that operations are not fulfilling the vision, and maybe Dabo is too close to operations to allow it. Establish the vision and let the Ops people go, if you have good Ops people…which I don’t think we have. Hire people who have PROVEN they are good at what they do and let them do their jobs. Except in our case we have a lot of coaches, too many I woudl argue, that have not proven they are good at what they do. Too many unproven coaches means too many unproven coaching techniques or styles, and just because you were a good player does not mean you will be a good coach. I woudl start with the offensive staff from O-line to runnign backs to receivers and QB coaches. Clean house. Hire proven people and let them run their proven systems for proven results. As the CEO establish the vision and the results you want and stay out of the kitchen.

Very good take. As a business person myself, I have experienced way to many times the exact thing you are speaking to. It becomes a problem in non-athletic world and is a problem in most athletic situations if it occurs. In football (pro or college), it is rare you see the guy that can do both.
Dabo has to make some hard but necessary decisions and then get out of the way. Empower proven people to do their thing. He needs to stick to the big picture as to managing the team and recruit at the very highest level.

if "best is the standard" how many programs are willing to attempt to poach Thomas Austin, Tyler Grisham or CJ Spiller? From where I sit all 3 probably need to go.

leaves the defense alone and they are the better unit and have been for a while
definitely needs to be less involved in the offense

Great post, TU. Agree on almost all of it. As much as it pains me to admit, I think even some of Dabo’s vision for Clemson is stale.
If the vision is (paraphrasing ofc) Clemson should be a wonderful place where good kids/athletes can come and develop as men, play 3-4 years and graduate with a Clemson degree… as noble as that sounds, I think unfort that’s only part of a successful FBS football program now. We need to become the school that’s more everyone may not start here but if you are talented, have good morals, are a good teammate and winner, you’ll love being here and finishing here. Or whatever version of today’s college football can fit into what’s important to Dabo.
A CEO who reached the pinnacle selling pagers, was really great at selling pagers and still just wants to sell pagers is probably going to struggle in the current market. The game is that different now, and it’s likely that some changes to the vision will be required to attract top coaching talent. This offseason will be immeasurably important, for many reasons. If CDS allows a lot of these former Clemson player asst coaches to stay, after this season, he’s further creating an environment where other non-Clemson assistant coaches look and say, why would I want to go there if it’s just a bunch of Clemson guys who go 6-6 and stump about how they shouldn’t have been 4-4.
