Why does everyone want Will Wade?

Serious question. I know he's a Clemson grad, but his VCU team didn't look particularly great last night.
I'm not saying I DON'T want him. Outside of knowing his alma mater, I really don't know anything about him.

But what makes him a #### of a young coach? What kind of offense does he like to run? Is he a defensive guy? If so, what kind? How's his track record in recruiting? How do he relate to players and prospects?

He was also able to sign a Top 25 recruiting class at Chattanooga. If it can be done there, it can be done at clemson.

When he was at Chattanooga, they ran a similar system to Purnell/Shaka as far as the press and getting up and down. Haven't watched as much at VCU.

Will Wade
Mar 17, 2017, 11:29 PM
|
|
Quick Bio:
GA and Director of Basketball Operations Under Purnell
First assistant hire for Tommy Amaker at Harvard- stayed at Harvard two seasons before leaving for VCU
Shaka Smart's first assistant hire at VCU- helped lead them to 3 NCAATs and a Final Four-- VCU was 111-37 while he was there
Became Head Coach at Chattanooga- leading them to first 20 win season in over ten years and winning COY award.
Left Chattanooga for VCU when Shaka went to TX. Won 25 games his first year and 26 games this year... including going 14-4 in conference both years. NCAAT team both years...
Guy is a winner, and he's at a program that is a better job than Clemson. They are poised to take the step Gonzaga and Butler have taken. Him having ties to Clemson is a big deal, and likely why we're having this conversation...
It would be a huge hire, IMO

big time recruiter-- I would say he's like a version of Jeff Scott (young guy, can recruit)...
We would get after people 94 ft. on defense, and run on offense, although he has played more of a 1/2 ct. game on offense than they did under Smart-- He is more a Shaka disciple than he is a Purnell disciple-- Shaka took what Purnell did and did it better, with better players, and Wade is the same.
Doesn't mean he wouldn't change to fit personnel- but I think he would prefer to get out and run, ala Shaka

Our boys seem to play better up and down. We have the big man to do it next year with Thomas. Mitchell Reed and Devoe are better going quick. Grantham has to step up.

That was also Tommy Bowden.
Wade seems like a bit of a risk. If we're going to ante up the dollars, maybe we should look for someone with more experience.
Like the OP, I'm just not sure why so manay are enamored with Wade.
"He is a #### of a young coach. Rising star in the business." We've been there and done that. Heck, Larry Shyatt was kicking as at Wyoming before we hired him.

Also won a 2nd round game vs Oregon State last year in the Dance. You never look at one loss to rate a coach. That was a bad match up going all the way to the west coach last night and play a West coach team who plays in that kie Mtn environment some. He might have not had his heart coaching in that game if he had his eye on the job.

I think maybe the difference is that Wade has been the head coach of multiple NCAAT teams. As far as I can remember, Shyatt never was.

My point was that Shyatt was not the HEAD COACH of an NCAA tournament team like Wade has been.

Probably going to get him. Word was he was leading candidate for Indiana and up for NC State. Really a great recruiter. Beat us for two top 100 guys we really wanted. Has a top 20 class coming into VCU next year if he was still going to be there. He runs more of a half court game now but still wants to run a lot. Plays strong defense. Really relates to players well. Energetic like Dabo. He probably was more successful on the A-10 his last two years than Shaka's last two in that conference. He's a big time hire.

Not sure. I thought this board gates OP and his style of play. Wade is the same. I loved OP and his style. Thought he he could recruit athletes and teach basketball. Seemed like a good fit to me. Plus as a black coach I thought it made it easier for him to get kids to come play at CU. maybe not but it didn't hurt. Personally I would go hard after Archie Miller first. Make him say no then go to the next guy whether that's Wade or whomever.

His floor is pretty much where we're at now, and has a huge upside. Also take into account since he's a Clemson grad it would probably be hard for hm to leave for a better job if he has success here, so there's tons of staying power with him.

Honestly, what Wade has done with VCU is incredible. When Shaka bolted for Texas, VCU basically lost an entire recruiting class (Kenny Williams to UNC, Tevin Mack to Texas, Jordan Murphy to Minnesota) and a couple of transfers (including Terry Larrier to UConn). To be able to fill that roster and still get in the tournament is actually pretty impressive. Further, he absolutely kills it on the recruiting trail. The class committed to him at VCU could come with him to Clemson, and at least two of them would be multi-year starters for a competitive ACC team. If DRad lets go of Brownell, Will Wade really is a no-brainer.
