Assessment of Cole Stoudt

Jun 11, 2014, 10:04 PM

from someone who has no credibility, and just an objectionable opinion.

(Assessment is from 1-weakest to 10-strongest)

-Arm strength (7) - has the capability to throw the long ball, but not likely to be a dart.

-Accuracy (7) - 75% of his passes are perfect, 15% are close, but 10% are way off/

-Vision (8) - Great ability to slow down the game and break down the defense

-Footwork (7) - Can get the ball out quickly and is always ready to move, but nothing too special.

-Running Ability (7) - Capable of gaining a hand full of yards after a play is broken down, but don't expect to see much success come out of designed runs/reads.

-Poise (9.5) - When the pressure is on, Cole has ice in his veins. I don't see the opponent or the game situation getting into his head. He'll play the exact same, performance wise, if we are up 30, down 1, or down by 30.

-Knowledge (9) - Definitely has a solid foundation in the offense. Coach Morris and Cole should click easily with Cole's experience in the system.

-Judgement (9) - Always cool, and always looking for what the defense is giving him. You won't see the bonehead, greedy mistakes coming from this guy.

-Ability to Improvise (4) - Playing into judgement, the coaches won't ever have a problem with Cole trying to make something out of nothing. Johnny Manziel he is not; Cole is a by-the-book quarterback and you won't see anything from him that wasn't scripted (some may call that a strength).

-Leadership (7) - Definitely a leader, however, I don't see him as the outspoken, verbal guy that will deliver a motivating speech when his team needs it. I do however think he'll motivate with his playing abilities as well as set a great example for the rest of the team.

Great assesment.Cole will surprise many

Jun 11, 2014, 10:40 PM [ in reply to Re: Assessment of Cole Stoudt ]

people this year.Boyd made tons of mental mistakes last year but was able to overcome with his arm,Sammy and his desire to get the job done.Cole will make much less mental mistakes allowing us to be very productive offensively, but also allowing our defense to win games this ar.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What is the accuracy based on?

Jun 11, 2014, 10:11 PM

You may be right, but it seems like he's right on target 99% of the time.

He went 20 for 21 vs SC State, that's pretty good accuracy!

Good assessment,

I think the biggest difference between him and Tajh will be Cole will be able to handle pressure much better, read all of his receivers before making a pass, but he won't have that big play factor Tajh had with his strong arm. And those mental issues are what have been a large part in the losses to Scar the last two years, at least. The 3 TOs from Tajh were just poor reads, which I doubt Stoudt will make. I'm not discrediting Boyd at all, just noting that his biggest weakness is one of Stoudts biggest Strengths.

I think you are underestimating his accuracy, leadership and running ability. However we have no idea what his poise is like. His meaningful snaps are low and there wasn't much pressure. No idea how he responds down 10 in tally. Maybe he shines or maybe he flops like tajh has done before. Heck tajh had two different sides in big games(ie. lsu or FSU).

Wait and see I think things aren't terribly different. He is better than the "game manager" title but not an elite QB either.
It will depend on all of it clicking not just Cole. Can't put it all on him, we have to evaluate the whol offensive unit with all the new pieces.

I agree that Boyd had some mental problems. USuC and last year against FSU. The FSU game was more of their defense that Tajh. 2012 game against FSU he put up 37 points and over 400 yards of total offense. If not for our terrible Defense we win that game handily. Tajh was rattled last year and all three years against USuC.

Cole will be servicable period.

I guarantee you will be missing Tajh's pinpoint deep balls when FSU decides to go man press on us in Tally.

Different team though and I think a more well rounded one... Its not all on Cole.

But there's also Deshawn ready to take over if we need a spark.

You nailed it. Tajh's deep ball accuracy was incredible and

Jun 20, 2014, 1:32 AM

we will miss it.

We got used to seeing long balls caught in stride by Sammy or Nuke and like to credit them with it. Well they get some, but watch a lot of CFB and you notice how special that is.

Cole will likely be better on %of decisions made, but less so on big plays. B/c he's not quite as accurate, and Sammy's not on the field.

LOL

Jun 12, 2014, 12:06 AM

how in the world can anybody judge his poise at this point? Or half of all these points for that matter. Anyways, hope you are right. I'd assume he'd be an 8 or 9 for accuracy

Re: LOL

Jun 12, 2014, 3:23 AM

Agree. And his ability to handle pressure? While I will say he's been in some positions of slight pressure - but nothing like the position he will be in on August 30. Unless I'm forgetting that time that he started against a major opponent and showed great poise and handled the pressure well.

I'll save my assessment for August 30. And I totally agree - given what he's shown on the field so far ... 9 for accuracy.

Hoping he proves he is 9s and 10s across the board.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think accuracy is a little low, poise and ability to

Jun 12, 2014, 12:40 AM

improvise are yet to be seen, I think both of these are based of high pressure situations, we just haven't seen enough reps to rate these imo.

Re: I think accuracy is a little low, poise and ability to

Jun 12, 2014, 6:14 AM

Yep, my very biggest concerns with Cole will be the pressure. And with him being a first year starter, he will surly surly be tested with tons of pressure. In a post I wrote on Monday was my concerns about Cole under heavy pressure. And I stated in that post that I hope that Dabo in fall practice will risk putting Cole in live game situations so that he can be coached up in live game practice. I surly would hate to see us going into Georgia without a clue of how Cole is going to handle a full assault aimed directly at him. If he can deal with our D trying to knock him out of his shoes, he will surly be able to handle the pressure that UGA will be bringing.

Pressure would be fine, but no 'all-out' hitting...***

Re: Pressure would be fine, but no 'all-out' hitting...***

couple points:
Tajh was pretty #### good. What QB doesn't have some bad games. LSU, GA, OSU, Auburn... pretty darn good.

On Cole: EVERYONE underestimates his arm strength. Saw a video of him at the camp hitting the cross bar from 55 with absolutely no effort. His arm is as strong as Tajh and sorry, Chad Kelly too. When he has to air it out he can but he has a unique talent. Throwing a catch-able ball. No needs to throw 100 mph on short passes. (See Joe Montana) Put it in the right spot. Watch his videos. He is so relaxed when he throws... you've never seen him air one out...... OOPS, I take that back. Remember his first spring game? First play was about a 60 yd bomb about a yard overthrown. Threw several deep ones in that game. In fact, the headline in one paper the next day read "Stoudt loves the long ball". He doesn't call the plays when he's in. He just runs what they tell him and makes the right reads. And when you're up by 30 pts you don't keep bombing your opponent.

Last thought: much is made of not much play time under pressure. When backup players play in any situation, it's pressure packed. You're not just getting playing time, your competing for your job next year. Funny all the Chad Kelly fans never raised an issue with his playing time, which came AFTER Cole got some reps. Going against 3s and 4s. Of course we all saw his true colors in his first "pressure" situation.

Cole's got the arm, therefore..... WE...THROW...DEEP!!!!

Cole has been waiting in the wings biding his time!!

He has been faithful to the cause every step of the way!

He is a Senior!! He WILL RISE to the occasion! He won't be perfect, but he WILL end "the streak", and that will be good enough for me!!

Go Tigers!!!

Re: Assessment of Cole Stoudt

Jun 19, 2014, 10:16 PM

Um, I don't know. Off the top of my head, there was some NFL QB who's two years older than him who was in the program during that time.

It's almost like being a backup QB for a while is a common thing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tajh was also our short yardage RB. Cole can move around

Jun 20, 2014, 1:36 AM [ in reply to Re: Assessment of Cole Stoudt ]

but is not likely to bulldoze on 3rd and 1 as well as Tajh did.

Plus, Dabo is extremely patient with players.

You get an E for effort but

Jun 20, 2014, 11:08 AM

I'm kinda shaken at your lackof confidence in his ability to improvise.

That is basically what college quarterbacking is all about.

Remember, guys are using deer antler spray now to enhance their 40 times & defensive linemen are now almost as fast as wide receivers with regards to first steps/acceleration.

Cole Stoudt's ability to improvise is obviously at least a 6 rating or else he would not be starting at quarterback for the University of Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He will be a touchdown machine!*
