God called a Reset last night.

1

Jan 3, 2023, 8:54 AM

To All,
This IS a football post, but only in one respect. If you saw the play with Damar Hamlin and Tee Higgins last night, your first reaction had to be, WHAT HAPPENED? It was the most routine of NFL plays, not even a particularly violent collision, as NFL tackles go these days. But, the aftermath was anything but routine.

As medical personnel got onto the field, and frantically began to administer CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, for those who may not actually know what it stands for), the focus immediately shifted from a football game, to a life and death situation for a young man. The players on both sides were horrified, numb, and in disbelief. This young man, just as themselves, was, to all outward appearances, in absolute peak physical condition. So, that is where the fear came from. "If it could happen to Damar, it could happen to ANY of us!"

The decision to suspend the game was absolutely the right one. I would even suggest the NFL go so far as to just declare it a tie, and move on to the next game. Unless there is some miraculous recovery for Damar Hamlin, and he can actually talk to his teammates, I can't see them being in any frame of mind to play this game in the next day or two, which would have to happen for scheduling purposes to minimally impact NEXT week.

So, why do I say God called a Reset last night? I say it because, every now and then, an event happens in the world which suddenly makes EVERYBODY re-evaluate what is important to them. This football game last night was REALLY important, as far as any professional football game can be important in the scheme of things. Playoff seedings, and possible bye weeks on the line. And then, in the space of just a few seconds, it was not important at all, not even a little bit. Not for the players, nor the fans watching, nor the league office. Suddenly, humanity intruded on the NFL in the most major way possible, a life and death situation playing out on an NFL field.

We got a reminder last night of just how fleeting life can be, how quickly and randomly it can be taken away. And, that should make every one of us take a look at ourselves, and ask the hard question, "Do I know what and who is really important in my life, and do those people know how important they are to me?" That is the Reset that God called last night. I hope we all take advantage of it and begin, once again, to see what is truly important in our lives. And, if you are in any way religious, please continue to pray for Damar Hamlin and his family.

Thank You for reading this post to the end, and if it makes you think just a little, then I accomplished what I set out to do.

Thank you 76er for a wonderful reminder that life does not revolve around the results of any game. I continue praying for Damar Hamlin and hope he will improve and is able to get the care he needs to have a long life.

It stood out to me that the reporters last night kept pausing to remind us we are talking about a "human being's life". Why that matters is because all of us, whether in Adam or in Christ, are made in the image of God. That makes all lives valuable and we need to be reminded of this.

is, just exactly what is it that you think you are being PAID to do? You want a gold star for just doing your job on one play out of many? I wish the league, AND college, would start flagging that crap everytime it occurs. It would go away very quickly if that was the case.

The networks love this theatrical nonsense.

It broadens the appeal of football to those that love the show boating and admire the ‘macho leader’ role models.

Jan 3, 2023, 9:24 AM

I totally agree ..... just like so many things like that it is a reminder of what is important. It does not mean we should ban football, although suspending the game was 100% the right thing to do, or even re-evaluating how the game is played, as the tackle may have had nothing to do with the incident. We may find out that Hamlin, like other athletes before had a genetic heart defect. Possibly this incident may have saved his life if we find that out. But ultimately is may have been just been God's call to all of us to remember how precious life is above all of our endeavors. I will continue to pray for Damar.

You can't take that guy seriously. we can pray for him, but he is so anti-Christ, so angry, in such obvious rebellion against God's ordering of the world that little of what he says can be taken seriously.

Perhaps through our prayer for him he will come to know peace.

Your posts have special value to those that are overtly anti-theistic but yet are privately troubled that their lives are not as satisfying as ‘it SHOULD be.’

There is a chance that those people will become circumspect about why they do what they do and why they think what they think.

Speaking as a former atheist who could no longer ignore the facts about God’s presence and Christ’s sacrifice to teach us about God’s love for all of us, messages such as yours make an incremental contribution to those that need circumspection.

Thank you for all of your posts on the Damar Hamlin tragedy, and the broader perspective of which I need reminding.

Not saying it wasn’t the right/moral thing to do by canceling the game last night but the game wasn’t cancelled in soccer a couple years ago when the exact same thing happened in a match in the Premire League. Also didn’t happen for my coworkers and I when a coworker had a heart attack at work. Matter of fact we were told to get back to work after the ambulance left with him. Again I’m not saying the NFL is wrong here, I think they got it right, but I find it odd how the talk last night was all about how it’s just a game but real life and other games seem to think it’s fine to go on as nothing happened. I guess I’m just more upset at how it was handled at my job with regular people and no one said it’s just a job/game and only the well being of your coworker matters right now.

I've seen similar situations played out...some got it right, some got it wrong. I have little time fir snowflakes, but if your friend, teammate, coworker just drops in front of you, it seems only reasonable that things would pause... Honestly, back to work?! Are we humans or just automatons? I've seen it before myself but it's not appropriate.

Workplace circumstances dictate handling of health emergency

Jan 4, 2023, 10:10 PM [ in reply to Re: God called a Reset last night. ]

EMTs and health care workers are faced with death on a regular basis. Their work requires them to press on despite being exposed to tragedies.

Xxxxxxxxxx

Entertainment events have the fundamental purpose of being diversions which are not intended to remind us of ‘real life.’ The entertainment value of an event when a performer collapses ruins the diversionary attribute of the event.

(when a spectator suffers a medical event or accident, the entertainment event is seldom delayed or cancelled.)

Xxxxxxxxxx

Real life jobs are performed to (ultimately) help other people to have access to goods and services. If, in the event of a serious medical issue to one or more employees occurs that is not due to the employers manufacturing process or equipment / defective (including slippery) stairs / collapsed ceiling / etc, then the employer will usually suspend work activities which are associated with that equipment / stairs / office environment.

If there is a medical emergency that occurs with an employee at the work place, then this event reflects one of the difficulties of ‘real life,’. Sometimes the management allows everyone to go home; sometimes Mgmt allows selected employees who ask to go leave to leave, and sometimes Mgmt asks that all employees remain on the job due to the exigencies of that business. (For example, if the place of work is an electric power plant that cannot operate if key employees leave work, Mgmt may face discrimination charges if some employees are allowed to leave but others must be required to keep working.)

It’s seldom as simple as saying that everything stops in all circumstances in the event of a medical emergency.

In addition to that game's importance from an NFL postseason standpoint, I would say that upwards of 90% of fantasy league championships, most of which would have been wrapping up last night, were also affected considering the volume of quality players those two teams possessed. A lot of folks are waking up to different perspectives today. Sure hope the young man pulls through.

Excellent post 76er! It puts things into perspective. Let’s reflect on Clemson football over the last 2 years. Some fans have seemed as if winning is all that mattered. At times I was one of those fans. There were so many negative comments Posted about Dabo, his coaches and players who were criticized harshly. IMO some post crossed the line. During TB’s time at Clemson fans would post many negative comments about TB, his coaching staff and players. All fans wanted was for TB to have a 10 game winning season and finish strong. Through it all TB maintained his strong faith in God.

Dabo has taken Clemson football to its highest level in school history. After 2 seasons of adversity some fans have quickly turned on Dabo, the coaches and players. How many programs have had our success over the last 10 to 15 years. I would estimate less than 5 programs. We have won 10 plus games for 12 consecutive years but fans still post some very negative comments. Maybe it’s because of who we lost to. I cannot stand losing to the coots. They won by 1 point yet they feel like they have won a NC.

We all love Clemson and love the success we have enjoyed under Dabo. But in the end it is just a game. I am not saying all post need to be rainbows and sunshine. It’s ok to question plays. Just think a minute or two before you post your comment. I know there are times I should. I just think the last 2 years we have become a fractured Clemson Family because of our recent adversity we lost to SC, we failed to make the CFP’s. A lot of negative comments have been posted on social media, talked about it on sports radio talk shows etc.. Recruits and their families read Tigernet, Twitter and other social media sites and listen to sports talk shows. It’s why in my opinion we must find a way to appreciate our current successes and support Clemson during adversities even though it’s not what we expected or felt our team was capable of accomplishing. So we have the need to find someone to blame and ways to take out our frustrations. Dabo, his staff and the players have received a lot of the blame and endured our frustration.

It’s great that Clemson is an elite program. IMO they still are. They are just experiencing some adversity. But they are just a football team and they need our support. Future recruits come to Clemson because we still have a special culture. Other schools are trying to copy Clemson and Dabo’s model for a successful program. Through all of our success and adversity we are fortunate to have a man of God as our HC. A HC who puts God first regardless of the success of the football program.

(It’s Just A Game)

This month I lost a very close friend age 50 due to a car accident. My uncle passed away, I lost my mother in law On the 23rd of December . A wonderful generous person who always treated me like a son. Now my Dad who is also my best friend found out last week his cancer has returned. This December has been a really difficult month. I am thankful even during adversity to have Jesus Christ as my Savior.

I included the incidents above because it has helped me to reset my life and my priorities. My life is always much happier when God is in charge and gives me his guidance. You never know when tragedy will strike. I tend to get off track. This is why I am fortunate to be a part of the Clemson Family and for your prayers.

I am asking for your prayers for my family, the families of the people I mentioned above and the Clemson Family. I believe it would be a better world if we would pray for each other and put our priorities in order.

Damar Hamlin for the Bills is fighting for his life. Please pray for him, his family and the Bills family. I believe 76er is correct. God is using last nights experience to encourage people to reset their lives and adjust their priorities.

You are all in my prayers and May God Bless you all in 2023.

Thank you for this thoughtful and introspective post. (I just got to it a minute or two ago.)

IMO, your perspectives about Clemson football and our coaches are spot on.

As for your personal trials and challenges with respect to your lost loved ones, I am happy for you that these people were in your life. In addition to the comfort that you get knowing that they are in heaven, you can get additional comfort as these loved ones still live within you.

As for your father, I have already given a brief prayer for him to return to health and for him to not suffer.

We are not entitled to have loved ones in our life; it is a privilege to be blessed by their presence in our life.

God bless you and your father.

punched the Hamlin button in order to give a bunch of people on the internet and around the water cooler something to collectively ponder, that is not a god I want to know. Terrible things happen to good people all the time, I hope God is in the love of the Hamlin family supporting each other in their struggle. I hope God was in the ambulance with Damar and his mom the other night. I have the unfortunate experience to know what it feels like when your child’s life hangs in the balance, it is a helpless place. I can only hope that Damar recovers and his life is spared.

I sincerely hope God isn’t destroying lives to teach us lessons. That would seem very wrong to me.

I can only say, that per my beliefs, no man can aspire to know the mind of God. He operates on a plane far above human understanding. I do not know if you believe that NDE's are legitimate experiences. But, those who have had them almost universally come back with a variation on this theme" "Suddenly, it all made perfect sense. Everything was connected, exactly as it was meant to be."

We as human beings certainly may not be able to see the good in something like what happened to Damar Hamlin. Or in the death of a small child. But, remember, those souls are not lost. They are in a place of joy beyond human understanding. It is those of us left behind who grieve. Those who have gone home are singing of the joy of eternal life.

Hey, TD Bandit, fire away. It matters not a whit to me, not about this.
