I am very fortunate. My grandfather was there and was wounded pretty bad. He floated in the ocean for hours with part of his skull missing. He lied about his age to join and was only 17 at the time. He had a metal plate inserted and lived a long and fruitful life. He was the greatest man I ever knew. The war was one thing he never talked about.

So many gave all that day. I have visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial and it’s a sacred spot. Elvis Presley paid to have it built. I can tell you there wasn’t a dry eye on the tour. It is such a surreal feeling.

I lost an uncle on the Arizona (my dad's brother). They were close. I am fortunate to have his Purple Heart as well as some other items given to my grandparents after his loss. Body, as many, was never recovered. I was asked to provide DNA to the Navy as they continue to try to identify remains that were recovered after the attack. Long shot since most are still on the ship but will see.

Listen, if your uncle's remains are never recovered, be consoled by the fact that he is interned in a hallowed place.

Sounds a lot like my grandpa. Clemson man and then enlisted at 17. Earned many metals for his acts of bravery during WW2 in the navy. Really wish I had written down many of his stories. He was truly the best man I’ve ever known and that’s why that generation will always be the greatest generation! Can you imagine 17 year olds doing what they did?! I can’t.
