I’ve looked at a few sites, can go get a male for about $800 w shots and breeding papers. Is this a good deal?
Any other recommendations on where to look? TIA

fabulous dogs, we have had 3. But cancer seems to be more common in this breed; one of ours died from it at under 3 yrs old. Even so, we'll probably get another one someday. Good luck, they're awesome.

They're easier to house train. Easier to train for retrieving. Easier all the way around. And you can pimp them out and make cold hard cash..... legally too. Like win, win, win.

Or just going to the pound and getting the one that looks most like a golden.
Full bloods have all kinds of genetic problems.

Why are goldens getting just as pricey as labs?

Was looking into a discount hunting dog so I was thinking of getting a golden. More brushing but still a good dog for kids. Then I started pricing them.

rescues first. There will typically be plenty of puppies available at rescue organizations, and more times than not the mixed breeds will end up being healthier in the long run. You might find a Golden or mostly Golden pup if you're lucky, but you'll never know if you don't look.

Cancer and hip dysplasia are 2 biggest concerns...
Nov 8, 2018, 9:13 AM
|
|
make sure you look at the records of father and mother and get certified hip report.
I'm not sure if there is such a thing as getting cancer info on a dog's line.
Our first dog was a golden and was pretty much a perfect dog. Smart, easily trained, not a barker, not a chewer, perfect amount of affection, loved kids, etc...
She ended up with hip dysplasia, but she was so tough it didn't really start to show until she was 9 or so. She died from cancer at 10.
Next dog (current dog) is a golden-doodle...but somehow looks like a light coat golden. No curly hair, sheds pretty bad, barks, is a little aggressive but very manageable, extremely smart and very affectionate. It's a male, which explains being a bit more aggressive.
Love both dogs, but I would go to a female golden over any dog.

of the dogs we have had, and she was still super docile to humans...she just ####### hated other dogs, other than her brother. You couldn't mess with her when she was super tired too, she would growl at you.
My male that is still in tact is an #######, but I blame that on him still having his nuts. He is 2 and a little bonkers. The fixed male is the chillest dog on the planet but obsessed with tennis balls. The girl, 7 months, is shaping up to be an awesome family dog. Great with kids until they #### her off too much and then she hides.

Go to the AKC website
Nov 8, 2018, 10:01 AM
|
|
Find breeder outside of your area and ask for recommendations on local breeders. Don’t support “backyard breeders” or puppy mills. Just because they have an AKC dog that was bred to another AKC dog does not mean they are a breeder. They’re really just a dog sex facilitator.
A breeders purpose is to better the breed and make the best dog they possibly can. Anything short of that in a breeder and you’re talking to someone who is just oooking for some financial gain.
There is a bigger picture when you buy a dog, just make sure your money is going to support someone who cares about the breed by asking for recommendations and reviews.
That said, the best breeders have a waitlist. I am on a waitlist for a deutsch drahthaar going on 1 year. But that is an elite dog breeding that constitutes such a wait. Your average reputable breeder would have a shorter wait.
Our Luvable Labs in Georgia has great English labs for the home. Haley and Timber were my favorite two when my girlfriend worked for them. You get what you pay for in a dog and what you’re paying for is a health guarantee, proven genetics that don’t carry hip dysplasia, or other major genetic weaknesses that a “backyard breeder” doesn’t care to test or account for.
If you don’t want to follow those guidelines I would strongly suggest adopting.
Above all be active with your dog, train with it and give it tasks. Nothing will ruin a dog like being alone and simply “loved” every afternoon. This is where you get destroyed doors and carpet, anxiety, and “insane” dogs. A dog needs to be raised much like you would a child with socialization and exposure to the world from bangs and booms, to smells and sights.
Never take getting a dog lightly and definitely don’t do it just because a golden under a Christmas tree is cute. They’re all cute, but that wears off and soon you’ll be cleaning poop and pee and it can stress the family. Be prepared for everything bad that could possibly happen and embrace the annoying task of raising a puppy and it will pay off in the end.

Dealt with this with my lab. Backyard breeder but I was young and dumb in my purchase. Thought I was getting a deal.
Father was a JH with all but 3 in the last 4 gens were either MH or HOF or both.
Mother had 3 additional MH in the line.
This dog had a ton of health issues.
But she was the best dog I ever had up until the UPS guy ran her over.
Started calling around local AKC breeders to price a new one and told them the "company" that I got my last dog from.
Every single one told me the same thing. Trash dogs with many issues. Had a couple tell me they wouldn't put me on their list for not doing enough research about the dog I was buying ####### 7 years ago.

The lab breeder?
When my girlfriend worked for him he health tested all his dogs and was actually a retired vet.
Maybe he lied to her but never gave her a reason to doubt him.
And We have never had a litter of puppies because we don’t have our dogs tested or titled to our expectations.

Considered a Goldiedoodle?
2 good breeds.... And reduces cancer risk considerably....However, I dont find them a cute, but you get a good pup. I've loved two goldens and lost both to different forms of cancer around 8 years old.

English bulldog. Hes by far my favorite dog and the fam loves him. Everything I read about them is true. He has quite the personality. He also has no regard for running through or over things. We were outside last week playing and he charged me and took me right off my feet. I weigh 220lbs, he gave 0 shets. It was pretty funny.
