Todays player spotlight is #75 Tucker Kattus. He is a true freshman offensive lineman for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.

Tucker was a “Three-year starter at left tackle for Cincinnati’s St. Xavier High School”. He also “was a first-team all-league selection and named the conference’s offensive lineman of the year as both a junior and senior … first-team all-state honoree in 2024”.

Tucker has 2 brothers who both play TE at Kentucky and his father, Eric Tucker, played TE at Michigan, as well as having a 7 year stint in the NFL where he played 6 of those years as a Cincinnati Bengal. Funnily enough Tucker is the only one in his family that doesn’t play TE.

Hear is what Tucker had to say on twitter about joining the Clemson football program: “I have always been a Clemson Football fan and have always wanted to run down the hill as a player. I value the strong values and success of the program. I also believe I will be developed here like no other place and will be able to achieve my goals and individual goals.”

Here is a quote from an article from Shakin The Southland, “Tucker Kattus is another 3-star who also de-committed from a different school (Kentucky) to choose Clemson. He has two brothers on Kentucky (both tight ends), so perhaps others assumed he would never consider anywhere outside Lexington. Michigan and Clemson were the only true power programs to have an official offer listed on Rivals, however, his tape is impressive as he plays both tackle positions. He moves well and excels in both pass protection and run blocking. Of course, I’m watching highlights, so I am not seeing his mistakes, but he looks like a very strong recruit.”.

I recommend reading the whole article. It talks about the Clemson 2025 offensive linemen. It’s a good read.
Here’s a link to it: https://www.shakinthesouthland.com/2025/5/3/24413412/veteran-clemson-offensive-line-welcomes-a-talent-crop-of-new-faces

I also want to point out that this is my favorite profile pic of a Clemson football player since I first started these player spotlights. I got this graphic off of Tucker Kattus’s instagram.

Here is his instagram if you want to check it out: https://www.instagram.com/tuckerkattus/

Here is his twitter too: https://x.com/kattus_tucker?lang=en

Speaking of social media… should I start posting the spotlighted player’s social media accounts?

PT Countdown, day 75: Rhenium!

19

Jun 16, 2025, 12:17 AM
Reply

Thanks O.J.
Periodic Table Countdown! Join us as we count our way down to Hydrogen and the kick off of Clemson Football 2025!

Element 75 is Rhenium!

Rhenium has an extremely high melting point, 5,765°F, behind only carbon and tungsten. Metals like this with high melting points are sometimes referred to as refractory metals. This characteristic makes it very useful in high-temperature applications such as rocket motors. For example, rhenium is used in the construction of the solid divert attitude control system (SDACS) used in the Standard Missile-3 Block IA kill vehicle, which can intercept long-range ballistic missiles outside of the atmosphere.

A 2013 Masters thesis at Clemson used rhenium as an analogue for radioactive technetium to study the suitability of cementitious material to contain nuclear waste for the Department of Energy.

75 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 9-0-1 in 1950

Unbeaten AGAIN!!

Clemson’s Fourth Undefeated team!!
And another bowl victory to cap the season! Thanks to a late safety that turned a 1-point deficit into a 1-point win!

Overview:

According to Wikipedia:

“The 1950 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson College in the Southern Conference during the 1950 college football season. In its 11th season under head coach Frank Howard, the team compiled a 9–0–1 record (3–0–1 against conference opponents), finished second in the Southern Conference, was ranked No. 10 in the final AP Poll, defeated Miami (FL) in the 1951 Orange Bowl, and outscored all opponents by a total of 344 to 76.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Outscored opponents 344-76????
- WOW!! Just, Wow!!

Worthy of Note:

ClemsonTigers.com provides the following information om this undefeated 1850 season:

Sept. 30, 1950 – Clemson beat Missouri 34-0 in the second game of the season. The Tigers of Columbia had been ranked in the preseason top 20. Three Tiger backs rushed for at least 100 yards, the second straight game Frank Howard had three 100-yard rushers in a game. It has happened just seven times in Clemson history.

Oct. 7, 1950 – Clemson recorded its third-straight shutout to open the season with a 27-0 win over NC State in a home night game. Wyndie Windham again led the Clemson defense in tackles and according to legend knocked out NC State players on three consecutive plays in this game.

Oct. 28, 1950 – Clemson defeated Wake Forest in Winston-Salem in a battle of top 20 teams, 13-12. Clemson lineman Bob Patton blocked the extra point in the final minute to preserve the victory for Clemson. It is the only time in Clemson history that a Tiger has blocked a kick on the last play of the game to give Clemson a victory.

Nov. 28, 1950 – Clemson accepted a bid to play in the Orange Bowl.

Jan. 1, 1951 – Clemson appeared in the Orange Bowl for the first time and squeaked out a 15-14 win over Miami (Fla.) to complete an undefeated season. Sterling Smith’s tackle of Frank Smith in the endzone gave Clemson a safety with under six minutes left in the game and gave the Tigers the victory. Don Wade also had two interceptions in the game. It was Clemson’s second undefeated season in the last three years for Howard’s Tigers.

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-historical-timeline/

ClemsonWiki also notes a first for Clemson:

November 3, 1956: Number thirteen-ranked Clemson defeats fifteenth-ranked Virginia Polytechnical Institute, 21-6, in Memorial Stadium for Homecoming. This was the first ever battle of top 20 teams in the history of Death Valley.

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/Clemson_Firsts

And ClemsonWiki adds the following about the close of Clemson’s regular season:

“November 25: E-Z win, 41-0, for eleventh-ranked Clemson over pitiful Auburn, who go 0-10! And we go to the Plains of Alabama to paddle our Tiger cousins!

Clemson ends the football season ranked tenth in the Associated Press poll and twelfth in the United Press International poll.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1950

Wikipedia adds the following:

“The team set numerous single-season school records, including most points scored (344), most rushing yards (2,800), most passing yards (1,411), and most combined passing and rushing yards (4,211). In addition, fullback and team captain Fred Cone set individual single-season school records in rushing yards (845), touchdowns (15), and points scored (92). Sophomore tailback Billy Hair led the team in passing yards with 644 and also rushed for 573 yards.

Fred Cone and end Glenn Smith were selected as first-team players on the 1950 All-Southern Conference football team. Four Clemson players were named to the All-South Carolina football team for 1950: Cone, Smith, tackle Bob Patton, and back Jackie Calvert.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

As for the January 1, 1951 Orange Bowl:

Sounds like it was a truly great game! According to Wikipedia:

Fred Cone gave Clemson a 7–0 lead on his one-yard touchdown run that culminated a 76-yard drive, which proved to be the halftime lead as the Hurricanes mustered just one first down in the first half. Six plays after Clemson received the opening kickoff in the second half, Glenn Smith caught a pass from Billy Hair for a touchdown. However, the extra point attempt was wide, making it a 13–0 lead for Clemson.

Miami retaliated with a touchdown run by Harry Mallios that had been set up by a Smith run of 45 yards. Minutes later, Jim Dooley intercepted a pass from Hair, which Miami took advantage of by scoring on a 95-yard touchdown drive to lead, 14–13.

With six minutes to go in the game, Mallios returned a punt that seemed to be a 79-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach. However, a clipping penalty was called on Miami, putting them back at their own five-yard-line. Two additional gains by Miami were also nullified by penalties. On a play from the four-yard-line, Miami halfback Frank Smith was tackled by Clemson lineman Sterling Smith behind the goal line for a safety, giving Clemson a 15–14 lead and ultimately the win

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1951_Orange_Bowl

ClemsonTigers also provides the following about this great game

“Frank Smith took a pitch-out from Hackett, but before Smith could get out of the end zone, Sterling Smith, a defensive guard for Clemson, tripped him up for a safety, and Clemson led 15-14. Don Wade ended the last Miami threat with an interception, his second of the game, and Clemson ran out the clock for the win.

“I charged across the line and I grabbed the Miami runner and held on for dear life until he was down” said Sterling Smith in an earlier interview. “It was the most memorable tackle in my career.”

This was Fred Cone’s last game as a Tiger. The senior from Pineapple, AL finished the season with 184 carries for 845 yards and 15 touchdowns, all school single season records at the time. Also he became Clemson’s first 2,000-yard rusher (2,183), and his 31 career touchdowns were also a school best, as were his 189 points scored.”

https://clemsontigers.com/1951-orange-bowl/#:~:text=Frank%20Smith%20took%20a%20pitch,the%20clock%20for%20the%20win.

January 1, 1951 Orange Bowl:

https://clemsontigers.com/1951-orange-bowl/

Results:

September 23: Presbyterian* W 55–0
September 30: at No. 17 Missouri* W 34–0

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

The tie with the Gamechickens was the third tie in the series history. Clemson’s record with the Chickens moved to 29-16-3. A ticket to see Clemson and South Carolina play to a 14-14 tie would have cost you $3.60 (yes – the decimal is correctly placed between the 3 and the 6).

Also in 1950:

According to ClemsonWiki:

“June 25: The Korean War begins.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1950

Also in 1950 – Clemson Baseball continues to shine:

May 5, 1950 – Fred Knoebel hit for the cycle (the first by a Tiger) at South Carolina. He walked in the first, tripled in the second, singled in the fourth and hit a home run in the fifth. Knoebel also doubled in the seventh and was hit-by-pitch in the eighth. Clemson won the game 14-5.

June 8,9, 1950 – Clemson played Alabama and Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament at Kannapolis, N.C., losing both games.
