78 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 4-5 in 1947

Hard to imagine that Coach Frank Howard is beginning to sit on the hot seat.
- Fortunately, Clemson was smart enough to recognize his talent. Better seasons are just around the corner!

Overview:

According to Wikipedia:

“The 1947 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson College during the 1947 college football season. In its eighth season under head coach Frank Howard, the team compiled a 4–5 record (1–3 against conference opponents) and outscored opponents by a total of 206 to 146.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1947_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Head Coach Frank Howard:

Worthy of Note:

According to ClemsonWiki:

September 24: The Clemson team travels to the Boston College game in an Eastern Airlines Douglas DC-4, the first time a state team had flown to a match. The team departs from Greenville Municipal Airport at 9:55 a.m.

November 22: Clemson defeats Auburn, 34-18, in Clemson Memorial Stadium to finish football season with a 4-5 record, 1-3 in league play for twelfth place in the Southern Conference. After five losing seasons in his eight years as head coach, Frank Howard's tenure as leader of the Tigers is somewhat dubious. Tailback Bobby Gage becomes the third Clemson player in history to gain 1,000 yards or more in a season when he amasses 502 yards rushing and 1,002 passing for a total of 1,504, a new Tigers record.

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1947

ClemsonTigers.com adds additional insights into the 1947 season:

“Sept. 24, 1947 – Clemson flew to Boston College on an Eastern Airline DC-4. It marked the first time that a state football team had flown to a football game. The quicker traveling did not help, however as Boston College defeated the Tigers, 32-22.

Nov. 8, 1947 – Clemson began a 15-game winning streak, the longest in school history at the time, with a win over Furman, 35-7.

Nov. 22, 1947 – Bobby Gage ran for 141 yards and passed for 233 as he led Clemson to a 34-18 win over Auburn. Gage threw four touchdown passes and had 374 yards total offense, records that stood almost 50 years. Hank Walker was Gage’s favorite receiver as he pulled in 10 passes for 148 yards. It was the first time in Clemson history that the Tigers had a 100-yard rusher, a 100-yard receiver and a 200-yard passer in the same game. The Clemson defense was also outstanding, holding Auburn to -9 yards rushing.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-historical-timeline/

And Wikipedia adds the following:

“Cary Cox was the team captain. The team's statistical leaders included tailback Bobby Gage with 1,002 passing yards and 502 rushing yards and wingback Jim Reynolds with 48 points scored (8 touchdowns).

Three Clemson player were named to the 1947 All-South Carolina football team: guard Frank Gillespie, center Cary Cox, and back Bobby Gage.

Clemson was ranked at No. 69 (out of 500 college football teams) in the final Litkenhous Ratings for 1947.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1947_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

Regarding RB Frank Gillespie. (Of note: Like many Athletes at the time, Gillespie’s Clemson career was interrupted by WW2):

According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Clemson Head Football Coach Frank Howard remembered the visit very well. Gillespie along with Jack Pollack, was attending the Blue Ridge School for Boys at Hendersonville, NC. Pollack asked Gillespie to go on the trip to Clemson with him. Pollack said he was going to a football tryout at Clemson.

Pollack was in the middle of the tryouts when Howard asked Gillespie “aren’t you going to suit up and try out?” Gillespie said no at first. Eventually he put on the football pads and a uniform.

“I told Frank, come on over and I’ll give you a tryout, said Howard.”

“When I was younger, I’d put on the pads and work out with the players some,” explained Howard.

“I remember very well giving Frank Gillespie a tryout, which was legal in those days. I hadn’t heard much about him, he was originally from Beckley, West Virginia. I lined up in front of him and told him to charge into me. Whomp! Bam!

I said, “That’s enough, son.

“Coach, I thought we were going to work out,” he told me.

“We have, welcome to Clemson. I signed Gillespie on the spot.”

“He went on to be one of the finest we’ve ever had. He was a great leader and athlete and could do pretty much whatever he wanted,” said Howard.

During his freshman year he played football, basketball and baseball. As a freshman he was the starting first baseman and batted .311.”

After the war, he was a starting guard on the Tiger football team for three years, playing both ways on the offensive and defensive lines. He was also a starting guard in basketball for three years, and played three more years of baseball, where he made the All-State team as a senior. He was the captain of the baseball and basketball teams and was a game captain on the football squad.

During his Clemson career, many honors came his way.

Gillespie won the McKelvin Award as the top all-around athlete in the Southern Conference for the 1947-48 academic year, his junior season.

Gillespie was the last Clemson athlete to letter in the three major sports of football, basketball, and baseball.

Frank Gillespie:

Gillespie was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1977.

With all five losses coming in row it was definitely a season of streaks:
- From 1-0 to 1-5 to 4-5!

The loss to the Gamechickens dropped Clemson’s record against the Chickens to 28-15-2. The Chickens undoubtedly were convinced that they were finally catching up to Clemson!

Coach Frank Howard’s seat might have been getting warm. But it was about to begin cooling starting in the next season!

Also in 1947:

Big things were happening in Clemson baseball! According to ClemsonTgers.com:

June 12-20, 1947 – Clemson participated in the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Eastern Finals and lost to eventual finalist Yale (and first-baseman George Bush) on June 20 at New Haven, Conn.

1947 – Joe Landrum was Clemson’s first baseball All-American. He earned first-team honors from ABCA after posting a 12-2 record and 2.23 ERA. Landrum went on to pitch for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Clemson won the Southern Conference title with a 13-2 record.

Element 78 is Platinum!

Platinum is an important catalyst used in catalytic converters to help reduce air pollution. Also why many catalytic converters are stolen off of cars for the value of the precious metal.
Clemson researchers have led a study on uses of platinum to reduce CO2 emissions.

When I think of platinum, I cannot help but think of platinum records. I think they still award those.

(Update: I just checked and platinum records are still awarded.)

Todays player spotlight is #78 Blake Miller. Blake Miller is a graduate senior offensive lineman for the 2025 Clemson Tigers. He is actually just 1 of 5 graduate senior offensive linemen coming back this year.

Miller has started every game at right tackle for Clemson since 2022. He was named a Freshman All-American in 2022 and also was a two-time All-ACC selection. He also “enters 2025 with the ninth-most career snaps from scrimmage on record in Clemson history (2,893) and concluded 2024 as one of 28 players on-record in school history to play 2,500 career snaps from scrimmage.” So Miller seems poised to continue his dominance this coming season.

Here is his bio: https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/season/2025/blake-miller/

Here is a video of him being mic’d up this spring: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vI8s2yi74ik
