since the foot is seldom used (as in soccer).
I had no intelligent reply, went into another room to get away from her & go online to find answer.

I believe the term originated in Australia. I read somewhere that, in very early years, most sporting events involved a horse so when this game began, the foot became a big part of the game.

Because the ball is advanced with your feet. The forward pass didn’t come along until around 50 years after the game’s inception.

the game first began. Seems like I remember punts going through the upright being worth a point or two. Of course, there was no forward pass so the box was always packed. That yielded some low scoring games and some blowout too.
