Getting Awful Thin at Defensive End

Aug 10, 2017, 2:17 PM

With Yearn out, Davis gone, Ferrell in concussion protocol, and Rudolph likely to get surgery or limited we look very thin at DE. Wilkins coming in even a little lighter (and probably more explosive) than last year means the staff envisioned using him outside anyway, but these depth issues will certainly push him outside more. Hopefully Kelly keeps coming along and Foster progresses quickly. We will need them.

Side note: Injuries happen... and I usually feel like those injuries that happen in early camp that aren't terribly severe give us a chance to develop a lot more depth. DE is scary thin, but things like the thumb injury to Van Smith and Ray Ray and Powell being out, are going to pay dividends with Muse and Simmons getting a ton more reps at safety and Rodgers doing the same in the slot.

Davis wasn't gonna play this year.

Heck he wouldn't have played next year, but would have loved to see him hang around and grow into the position.

Ferrell bumped his head, will be OK in a few days.

Rudolph, sounds like there is an issue that will be put off till after the season, if he's good enough to avoid a redshirt .

Shaq played with injured shoulder

last few games of the season in '15 and so did Ben

I just hope it isn't something really bad and he can play. maybe being a backup will allow him to play only if needed.

I don't doubt he can play with it... he's a gamer. The point is, he wouldn't have to had we not had a few of the aforementioned issues at the position. I think Davis would have played this season (yes, I know he's light, but he's also been tough to handle on passing situations in practice and scrimmages and could have spelled our guys).

DE is definitely an area of question now. But, as has been mentioned above, thankfully Ferrell's injury does not seem to be serious. Hopefully the guys will all stay healthy.

Not really.

Samuel was a year awat. Rudolph might have well redshirted anyway. We need some DE's but those arent a factor now.

as long as we avoid another injury, I believe we'll be okay.

Better to have injuries now and hopefully, most of these guys will be healthy and playing great ball in the next 5-6 weeks.
