Daughter of has an iPhone with no service. Thinking of getting her a texting app so she has a number that she can text with her friends while on WiFi (and free up wife’s phone where all the texts are going now). Whatcha got?

I pay for a messaging app. It has these custom emojis reactions and they're a ton of fun. Think Tner awards, but with thousands of funny options. It's better than WhatsApp
Downside (upside?), you can join all kinds of wild #### chats, interact with shitthead influences directly, etc.

Works on WiFi without a cell contract.
I use it when I adjunct so the students don’t have my real number. It’s tied to g-mail so don’t have to add the app if you don’t want.

But I worked in a Google shop and we made use of all their free apps along with the paid apps that drove our software. Overall, Google is great if you can think like a developer, but it's not always the best platform for the general public. That said, Voice is easy to use and you can get a free dedicated telephone number to make wifi calls with voicemail and texting.

something with other counselors the other day where they talked about the 764 organization and its offshoots. Quite scary from what I read and she was texting me a little about it.
Telegram, Discord, and Roblox are the worst. Lots of grooming, bullying, extreme bullying, etc. Lots of times it is just kids preying on kids which makes it difficult to prosecute. Apparently Roblox has games within it that desensitize kids to violence and there are chat features in there that are really bad. I had heard that on the news before but this training she went to gave more info on it.
Roblox is a no-go in our house.

but that aint a phone number and she could only text friends who you were friends with their parents or something like that.
That being said, having two kids with phones and one with an iPad...don't do it.
Those phones are the worst thing ever. I hate them.

when I hear of parents resisting the kid having a phone until such a time that they are frequently away from adults and may need to get in touch with one.
Now I don't try to shame parent that give a 8 year old a phone, they may have certain circumstances I can't know or understand, but in general I think it is bad.

I could be wrong though.
F a phone. Not sure how old she is, but DO hold out as long as possible. Once it starts, she'll relentlessly hound you for more apps, features, service, etc. You'll give in. Then you'll learn that monitoring them is like a full time GD job, then you'll just give up and say F it.

I think there is a way to set up an Apple watch to have just messages (and maybe calls) via Wifi.
Not sure how old your daughter is but I would push back hard on any messaging/social media app until 16 or so.

hold out for as long as you can before opening that box. Once it's open - even a little - it's all downhill from there.
I know they think they can't have a life without a phone to text or whatever, but it's just not true. Daughter-of wasn't allowed to have a text method of any kind until 7th grade...and I wish I had held out longer.
