actually. gt and paul Johnson were the first to give the other teams, including spur daddy, the blue print. they were our first loss in chads time here. but there are some good and bad things about those plans. first you have to have decent or good corners to play that type d. second, our o even behind 14-17 points is not out of the game. (see Maryland game 2 years ago). we can score and quick. and second you must be able to move the ball to control the clock. if our d gets turnovers or stops this game will be over quick.

I could be very wrong, but I saw our defense really mature as the season progressed, and it came to a head in the LSU game. I saw more of the same with the tackling, the enthusiasm, etc. in the Spring. I think BV has our defense going in the right direction, and I think we all will be pleased.

containing Gurley/Marshall (you cannot stop them, but containing them would be great). If we can slow down their running game in the first quarter, they will pass more later on in the game. If Gurley/Marshall are ripping us for 4-5 yds per rush, its over.

That will only work if our defense has not improved or plays poorly. We couldnt get SCar off the field which is why they were so effective against our O.

Heck with backup QB, the RB Miles could've played QB & USCe would've smashed UGA based on how things looked.

any time a team has to adjust their game plan to try and change/alter another teams game plan, their game will not be 100% So MR & dawgs play any way you want/like to either way the Tigers will be playing theirs. With the dawgs already thinking about going 3 & out, just gives CM more time to turn the Tigers wild

risk/high reward defense. Blitz a lot, load the box against the run, jam the WR's.
To me, our defensive philosophy needs to match our offensive philosophy.

Absolutely...can't afford to let them drive down the field for a quarter...would much rather turn it into track meet

I haven't seen this posted near enough. Take chances and make mistakes because every turnover or 3 and out gives our offense another chance. If they score quickly it puts the ball right back in the hands of our play makers. Especially playing in the first game in DV they will make mistakes and its up to us to capitalize.

I found an interesting read on College Football By The Numbers which pointed to a stat that indicates the defense was actually pretty good last year except for the big plays. The defense was great until the ball got 4 yards down the field....once a run or pass went for 4 yards it had a high probability of going for another 15 yards.
My point of bringing this up is that until the linebackers and db's prove that can play defense it would seem crazy to play high risk defense. That type of defensive play calling could result in even more big plays than last year.
Big game, national spotlight.......most coaches will be conservative and wait for some nervous kid on the other team to make a mistake. If all it took to be successful on defense was a bunch of blitzing and tight man coverage, then we could all be defensive coordinators.

I'd do the same with a young secondary versus our receivers.

Two things about Marks comments:
Aug 27, 2013, 3:58 PM
|
|
1. His son at Clemson was a Tommy Bowden deal and when Tommy left so did the younger richt!
2. Some of what Mark said but this can also help us. The way you slow it down also means our young defense has more time to react and get in position for make plays, and when we do have the ball. we will not slow down so you defense will still get gassed!

This philosophy could easily backfire.

Say we get the ball first and score. They come out, run the ball three times, and go three and out. We get the ball and score again.
Well now we're up two scores early. I don't think you can afford another three and out and going down three scores on the road. That's what happened to them against SCAR, and it was ugly.

Say Georgia gets the ball first and they go on a 7 minute drive of Gurley abusing your front seven and Marshall speeding pass your defense. And Clemson goes. 3 and out. Stadium will get silent

I see Gurley getting abused in this game. He will be keyed on so your boy Murray better do a better job passing than that dude from LSU. What was his name Zack something a burger. Ah who cares we are going to abuse your entire team including the coaches. When we score first we are going to go to the end zone and celebrate and get a 15 yarder right off the bat.

If we win the coin toss. The Chad always takes the ball first.
If the opposing team wins the toss. They all most always defers to the second half.
Clemson has the ball first in all most every game.

I think he comes out with a balanced attack. I also bet he goes play action on the first play to test our secondary.

That wouldn't suprise me in the least. I predicted our 1st play would be a seam pass off the PA to Artie Lynch.

Chad will not shoot his O in the foot again, and with Sammy/Bryant running at full speed, sucks for them even more.
I am not worried on bit about our RBs.
Us replacing J Brown's blue collar work is my concern.
