George Rogers question.

Why did george pick south caro? Clemson was a premier program in the 80's and south carolina, well lets just say they were the typical south carolina. He would have a NC ring.

He also worked at Palmetto Wholesale on Rosewood Dr while attending school. Palmetto Wholesale, Homecenters, and Hardwares were chaired and run by John Saunders, who was a running back in the 40's for the chickens.
He never scored against us. Neither did Herschel Walker.

and heard from the PA announcer late in the 4th when it was apparent that George was done for the day (41-23 shellacking courtesy of the Tigers), "George Rogers, 21 carries, 96 yards (or whatever the stats were) NO TOUCHDOWNS"...and the whole Hill exploded and the "#### a doodle doo, #### a doodle doo, Carolina Gamecocks TO HELL WITH YOU!" chant started.....quite a motivating thing for this 10 year old from Columbia who grew up despising them with a passion....a passion that hasn't faded one iota over time....i will say this, Rogers was the best big back i ever saw at the college level...i'd take him over Herschel any day of the week...he was a horse with breakaway speed and physical as hell.....but never touched the end zone against us....

I graduated Clemson in '77

didn't get to see the '78 game living in Atlanta and just starting a new career.
I played 18 holes of golf with George back in either 1999 or 2000 in a Clemson vs usuc golf challenge. He could hit the ball a long way, but his direction was usually off. His partner was a dentist that played everyday. My partner and I managed to tie them in the match. I enjoyed the time spent with him. He was amusing and a happy individual.

when George was a recruit, Carolina had the two thousand yard rushers, Kevin Long and Clarence Williams. both those guys were sure-fire NFL draft picks, they wouldn't be around when George came in as a freshman, so it was easy to sell him on PT as a freshman and being the next thousand yard rusher. neither team was very good in the mid-seventies, so George picked the school that sold him on the NFL opportunity and gave him and his family enough "benefits" to say yes...

He would not have been a starter at Clemson. He was great at USUCK,but would have struggled to make the starting lineup at Tiger town. Kind of like Hershel Walker. Trophy winners at USUCK and UGA and backups at Tiger town. They made the correct decisions!

Or not. He did get a mural and stuff. That trophy he won will always be the highlight of the Cootstains football heritage...or lack thereof.
