Has anyone had any experience with a solar powered generator ? We wouldn't be trying to run the whole house, just enough to get by (hot water tank, fridge, heat pump?)

Those devices are the majority of your load. Might as well get a whole home at that point.

How about anyone with a portable tri-fuel generator? Gasoline and LP for camping or tailgating. Natural gas to run a refrigerator and a few led lights during home emergency. I found one made by a company I never heard of before but it doesn't have any reviews.

I just bought this one for the same purpose from Amazon and its on sale: Westinghouse 2550 Peak Watt Super Quiet & Lightweight Portable Inverter Generator, RV Ready 30A Outlet, Gas and Propane Powered, CO Sensor, Parallel Capable, Long Run Time
Looked at the battery + solar options but not sure how long the battery would last continually plugged in. Liked the propane option as I already have tanks, and this one was highly rated.

2550 peak is not even two 1500 watt hair dryers. Careful what load you plug in, it could damage appliances and/ generator.

Get a WEN inverter, you will be happy, and I'm not a dealer. I needed one for my business, it was a great investment.

I bought a Wen 2350 W for the tailgates. Main reason it was orange and the 2nd reason was good reviews.

I bought a Firman that I ran on gasoline for 4 days after Helene. I have a transfer switch that gets my well, septic pump, two refrigerators, freezer, hot water heater, and one set of lights. Had all switched on and ran extension cords through surge protector to TV, kids PS5, internet router (Starlink), phone chargers. It did very well and did not let me down. It is a trifuel that can run on gasoline, propane, or NG. It did go through 12-14 gallons per day but that’s not bad IMHO.

Why go generator? Buy solar plus a battery.
I work for a battery company, sonnen, that is German engineered and works all solar panel inverters.
This is a better option as utility companies will look at engaging Virtual Power Plants and incentivizing homeowners to add batteries.

Can you elaborate a little more because I have yet to find a system that is cost efficient but solar. Right now I’m headed down the 14ke portable generator with a transfer switch. That will power 90% of my house. I’ll probably be in 2-3k. I have 1000 gallon propane tank do fuel is not an issue. I do like the idea of solar just curious how it compares.

It's clean power, but you'd need a really large battery to carry you a few days or every day needs to be sunny to keep it charged up.
A battery is no good unless you have an inverter to run your AC stuff.

i bought a generator from amazon 13k -- my fear now becomes how to power the thing. Supposedly its 1 gallon gas / hour .... so 24 gallons gas a day. I dont want to sit in those gas lines everyday. Any experienced generator people explain what the correct daily process should be? Should I run it 4hrs off 4hrs / keep off at night, etc.
Only trying to keep fridge cold and freezer from losing food. Will try putting food from fridge in smaller fridge so Im not opening big fridge everytime.
I dont want to overthink this .....

I read to run it two hours and off four. That should be plenty assuming your fridge/freezer has the door shut the majority of the time.

No chance.
and most full solar setups are meant to feed power into the grid for credit.
They won't actually run your house when the power is off.

It’s pretty expensive though the batteries are ~ $1,000/kilowatt

Next Monday, the company will finish the process of having our 26K, Kohler, whole house generator installed. We started before the Hurricane and was scheduled in two phases, but the Hurricane delayed completion. We had natural gas for our pool heater, so we are using natural gas. Looking forward to seeing how it works and the cost of running it.

You would need a 7000watt generator minimum to run your heat pump.

Then you probably need another 4500-5000 to power your hot water heater
Then you need another 2000 for your fridge, etc
So you’d probably need a 15000 watt generator to run them all together
