Garrett Riley....

Should get up in the booth during the game. I know it's a preference thing for some coordinators but I think him having a birdseye view of what is going on in real time will help him with play calling

I have always wondered that too but I guess like you said it’s personal preference and they rely on their eyes in the sky to tell them what they need to know. Just hope he’s able to get this offense going GonTigers!

Isn't the 2024 season the year that the coach can use a mic in the QB's ear for communications for a certain amount of time before the snap?

Seems superfluous to me. They already have helmets with facemasks. Won’t eye pads impede their vision?

15 seconds before the play clock runs out.

How does that work if a team is running a no huddle hurryup

Aug 26, 2024, 10:43 AM

Seems like a way to have the coach in the QB ear until the ball is snapped.

The comm cuts off at 15 seconds or at the snap, whichever is first. So yes, if you are running a play before the 15 second mark, comms are still on. This is the same thing the NFL has been using for years.

The same is true for the defense, by the way. They also have 1 designated player with communication in helmet.

The sideline Ipad rule will go into effect this year for all schools except NCST. They don't own any Ipads and have nobody on staff capable of starting one up. Last I heard, Dave Dadoorunrun had requested extra diesel fuel for the sidelines so they would be able to start and run the Ipads when they arrive.

Dabo should be calling the plays. Everyone knows that.***

Booth or Field: "I Hope He Has Made Adjustments For What Kirby Likes To Do"!

Aug 26, 2024, 1:01 PM

Having played against a Kirby Smart influenced defense in the championship game; my only Garrett Riley question is: "did he learn anything from that championship game against Georgia, he can use to make adjustments this go around"?

Hoping he does, of course! Duggan and company were a well oiled machine; but they never faced a DL like that up until that point.

Our OL is playing against players on our DL who all will get NFL opportunities if they remain healthy. Big difference when you have seen it and more importantly, "felt it"!

Agreed. I think Goodwin & Riley should be up in the box

Aug 26, 2024, 2:50 PM

Now that they have headsets I’m curious to see if they make the move upstairs this year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He didnt need to be in the booth at SMU or TCU

because Sonny Dykes was the main one calling the plays.

I don’t know who is calling the plays at Clemson, but I suspect it is like it was when Elliott and Streeter were here, and they might suggest a play but Dabo might as well, and it’s a team/committee approach.

This is also why our offense has gotten much slower in terms of pace. If several people need to weigh in and discuss options, you can’t go fast.

So was Brent....

Who Is In The Booth is the question.

Aug 26, 2024, 6:08 PM

If a play-caller is on the sideline; they "must trust the information they are getting from the booth"!

For example, "hey O.C. they are playing man-under or they are rolling the safety to the X"! Do they listen? And, do they take that info and make adjustments? Did they see it from their point of view and dismiss the booth.

I agree. It will be interesting to see if it changes or stays the same.

Most DCs want to be on the field.

Some OCs want to have a birds eye view. Others want to be on the field where they can talk eye to eye with the QB as he comes off the field.

Mark Richt was an outstanding OC for over a decade at FSU. He was in the box. Steve Spurrier, while he was HC was also the OC. He would have not have been able to handle being in the box.

I'm not sure, but I think the large majority of OCs are on the field.

tnet-military.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree

Aug 28, 2024, 9:55 AM

You can see the field better from up high.
You can more easily pick up defensive tendencies, coverages, and blitz packages from the box.

I understand why DCs generally at field level. They have to react more quickly and bring in the sideline helps with that.

In military terms, the offense needs to be strategic. A field level view tends to make the OC more tactical and less strategic.
That can be very bad thing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nah, I like the coordinators on the field with the team

Aug 28, 2024, 4:27 PM

I think they should have their assistants up there away from the field where they can analyze better. Those guys need to feel the pulse of the team.
