Brownell

Feb 11, 2014, 10:03 PM

The ones that are critical of Brownell here simply know nothing about the game. He is the best coach of the "game" itself we have had since Barnes ( who is a very good coach by the way ). We were picked 14th and this team has no seniors and lost it's 2 top scorers from last year. If we can somehow win 3 more games we have a good shot at the NIT which would be a VERY GOOD ACCOMPLISHMENT for this team !! We are not an NCAA team this year. We play hard. We play good defense. This is a tribute to coaching. A coach cannot put the ball in the basket no matter what offense he draws up. We will be very fortunate to keep Brownell for the long haul. I realize he must recruit players but this is not easy at Clemson given his conference competition and our overall dismal tradition. Given time though it can be done so lay off Brownell and let him do his job !!

who can either greatly improve their offensive skill set OR recruit players who already possess offensive skills--nothing will iprove!

uhh, did you watch KJ as a freshman?

Feb 11, 2014, 10:30 PM

he's improved a little. So have Hall, Nnoko and Roper. Blossomgame and Djitte will as well and we'll have 3 outstanding shooters joining the team next season. So your concerns will be met

Teach it Brother! I couldn't agree more. We are by far ahead of where I thought we would be at this point. Still need some wins to get to the NIT but I think the Tigers can make it.

FYI, media predicting 14th isn't an accolade

He's a good coach, but please stop using this type of spin.

Devil's Advocate

How is just making the NIT in a coach's fourth year a very good accomplishment (all caps)?

To me, that should be bear minimum for any coach who wants to see a 5th year, especially one who inherited a program going to the NCAAs.

When the cupboard was bare and all that was left was hardheaded Booker and Jennings?

His class is finally starting to become seniors.

Where do they find you people?

Re: Devil's Advocate

The cupboard was bare is a tiresome argument. We had a recruit for 2010, that with Winecki, would be a serviceable big man. Coaches come into worse situations all of the time and win. Fran McCaffrey inherited an Iowa team coming off 3 straight losing sseasons. In his second and third seasons, he went to the NIT. In his fourth season, just like Brownell, he has his team ranked #15 and #16 currently and poised to make the NCAA tournament. Dana Altman at Oregon inherited a team that was was 24-39 the two seasons before him. He went CBI first year, NIT second, NCAA Sweet 16 in third.

Neither Oregon or Iowa are great basketball powers, but had a a chart of improvement every year and made the NIT in a coaches' second year. I'm not saying Brownell is a terrible coach, just that NIT is hardly a landmark achievement. it should be bear minimum for a program that wants to and can win, like Clemson.

We had a recruit in 2010

Feb 12, 2014, 11:02 AM

Are you talking about Cory Stanton...the point guard?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: We had a recruit in 2010

Feb 12, 2014, 11:59 AM

I'm talking about Marcus Thornton, Georgia's Mr. Basketball, that was signed and Brownell could not convince to stay during the coach change. I'm not saying he would be a world beater, just that we would have more of an inside presence currently and some sort of senior presence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brownell is incredible cosidering how bad SC's HS BBall

Feb 12, 2014, 3:18 PM

And our BBall tradition is. progress is key and we are getting it with almost no talent also (besides KJ)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With what Brownell has to work with.......

Feb 12, 2014, 3:54 PM

I think he's doing a good job. No inside game no real shooters, and we still have a winning record.

Your attack doesn't address my point that it is time for us to accomplish something with our coach. I have always said that defensively, Brownell is a good coach. NIT is where we have to be after 4 years. That is my simple straightforward opinion. We are a program that should be constantly fighting for the NCAAs every year simply because we have proven that we can with a good coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They would rather attack you than attack your arguments..

Feb 12, 2014, 5:07 PM

par for the course. If anyone says anything remotely critical, he or she is an idiot. I commented how ugly our game against GT was to watch and was called a moron.

I wonder if Duke regrets not firing Coach K after he

Feb 12, 2014, 4:51 PM [ in reply to Devil's Advocate ]

struggled record-wise for four seasons after taking over for Bill Foster, who had them in the NCAA championship game just a few years prior. Not merely the NCAA tourney mind you, the bloody Championship game itself.

Duke fans were obviously restless those few years. It's a good thing (for Duke) that folks far more knowledgeable about those types of processes than fans actually ran the show, though, as the rest is not only history, but Hall of Fame history.

Very bad luck with the injuries to Bgame and Rooks. Had they remained healthy,KJ would have some much needed scoring help.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Blossomgame is hurt?

Feb 12, 2014, 5:05 PM

Since when? Last year maybe, but not this year. At least I don't think he is. IMO, his problem is that he is just not yet physical enough to play underneath. He shows flashes and I hope he develops like KJ has, but he may have to put on some muscle to do that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brownell is a great coach of defense...

Feb 12, 2014, 5:03 PM

with that I don't think anyone can disagree. I think the verdict is still out on whether he is a good coach of offense. And, like it or not, recruiting is part of coaching at the college level. So if he does not recruit well, then no, he is not doing a great job. I hope he is here a long time, but to say those who are skeptical or critical "know nothing about the game" is simply ridiculous. Anyone who knows anything about the game can see we are terrible offensively. Whether it's because of the players or the sets, it is still on Brownell to do something about it.

One thing I don't understand about our team is why we don't push it more when we have the chance. I understand the desire to run clock and limit the other teams' possessions but I also think it inhibits us from scoring more easily. We can get much easier baskets when running (picking our spots, not all the time) than we can in a half court set. It seemed like we did a lot more of that early in the season but once the ACC started, we took the air out of the ball entirely. A few times last night, I thought we had a chance for a break with numbers in our favor, and we slowed it down, backed it out and got a bad shot.

But hey, I am critical of Brownell, but I do hope he turns it around and is here a long time. But I'm also not willing to give him an indefinite period of time to do so like others seem to be willing to do.
