Clemson traveled with a symptomatic player to FSU? Of course not

Nov 22, 2020, 8:03 PM

I have seen a lot of speculation about why Clemson would travel a player who was showing symptoms, and I've seen members of the national media tweet about why Clemson would do such a thing. I have even been forwarded board posts from FSU where their fans have said they blame Clemson for traveling someone with COVID symptoms. I, for the life of me, don't understand the stupidity. You think Clemson would travel a backup redshirt freshman OL and put the season in jeopardy for a backup OL? Of course not.

Here are the facts, and if I get in trouble then I get in trouble, but I feel like this needs to be said and I'll deal with any fallout from Clemson. The player in question had mild symptoms Sunday and Monday but tested negative. By Tuesday the symptoms were gone. He tested negative. Wednesday, no symptoms, negative test. Thursday, no symptoms, negative test. Friday, no symptoms. At that point, you have to trust the testing process. He was still made to isolate, alone at the back of the plane, alone on the bus, didn't share a room in Tallahassee. Clemson did everything by the book.

In other words, those who think Clemson knowingly traveled a player who could have COVID are wrong. He was not symptomatic in any way.

Well said David!

Thanks!

The thing too is: "there are such things as false positives"! He had two negative test during the week. Wasn't showing symptoms Friday. Still isolated as a precaution and "should have been a yawn" no big deal thanks for letting us know Clemson - let's go play! But, they got out of an A-whooping plain and simple! It will sound good to people who do not have all the facts. But, I do and many others and we will tell it like it is.

Nov 22, 2020, 9:09 PM

actually made the decision to cancel the game. Dabo is suggesting that other than FSU medical staff were involved. One way to investigate is to use Florida’s FOIA to make a records request to FSU’s General Counsel. You could request “all records, but not limited to, emails, phone calls, phone call logs, notes, etc.,” from or to any medical staff, FSU Admin, FSU athletics, from Thursday, Nov 19 through Monday, Nov 23rd 2020. Some Tiger with legal expertise with FOIA should be able to help here.

Link below for you is to the FSU FOIA request. As a bona fide journalist, they should waive any fees to you in the interest of full transparency!

https://generalcounsel.fsu.edu/public-records

Also, I saw somewhere that Dabo offered to have the player retested and if the retest was negative, to play later Sat, or even Sun or Mon. That sounded like prudent & reasonable solution. Addresses FSU Covid concerns and reduces the travel expense for Clemson and both Tiger & FSU fans who traveled great distances. I never saw why FSU deemed this to be unacceptable?

Not saying this was one but there are false positive Covid test results. In fact, Andrew Cohen, PhD, in an article on Nov 9th found “So, with a 1-percent infection rate in the test population, a false-positive rate of only 0.5 percent leads to nearly 40 percent of the positive results being wrong.”

Go get ‘em Tiger!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU Admin may have had another reason to decline to play

Nov 22, 2020, 9:52 PM

Any chance that the FSU administration was a little upset at the ESPN article from 11/19/20
“Inside the 6-year unraveling of Florida State football” by Adelson/Hale? Maybe they felt like being involved in a blowout game would allow too much time for the ABC announcers to discuss the issues revealed in the article. Paints a picture of an extremely dysfunctional environment at FSU. Mentions how Jimbo wanted FSU to pony up for upgrades like Clemson did. Broadcast could have turned into another FSU bashing and 3 hour Clemson infomercial. Just saying the COVID issue just gave them an easy out of what could have been more than just a lopsided football game.

Re: FSU Admin may have had another reason to decline to play

Nov 23, 2020, 6:57 AM

Now we are talking with the FOIA. What I do not understand is how was FSU allowed to cancel the game. The ACC has ruled that the game could be played. How is this not a forfeit?

Nov 23, 2020, 5:23 AM

This whole Covid thing is out of whack.

Anyone can correct me, buy I have not seen a single report of a college athlete(any sport) or a current professional athlete needing hospitalization?? That said, I have yet to hear of any staff needing to be hospitalized anywhere at least in USA. There are a lot of 60yr old plus coaches and staff.

Over 40% of Covid deaths were when Democratic cities were putting sick patients in with elderly patients.

Get rid of that idiotic decision, and Cuomo should be put in jail for murder, Involuntary Manslaughter for stupidity, and the Covid death rate is equal to the common flu unless you are over 65yrs old.

These fearmongers have set the US back by 2yrs in economic growth for retirement funds and personal gain. That number was through October, they said that stagnant US is almost 1wk stagnant equals 1 month recovery.

Oregon governor made law that only 6ppl can group together over holidays, any number above is $400 fine and at least 1 night jail. So if you have 5kids, mom and father, someone can't come to Thanksgiving??? How retarded is that. Why can vulnerable ppl make up their own minds? Thats the problem with democratic socialism, they want to make every decision for every citizen. I guarantee if I had big family that wanted 10ppl to have dinner, we would!! And if govt said NO, we would have giant problem.

Sorry, soap box crap

Re: Clemson traveled with a symptomatic player to FSU? Of course not

Nov 23, 2020, 8:25 AM

Thanks for posting this David. I was reading some of the National college football message boards that had some of the dumbest logic. Clemson would put Trevor Lawrence in the protocol and hold out two star defensive lineman for post Covid reasons we’ll I to the season yet would have some big coverup so a backup O-Lineman could practice and travel with the team.?

Clemson followed the ACC and school protocols. The ACC protocols allow the medical staffs to make the final decision. FSU was in the same circumstance that many other schools have been in this year. They chose not to play. Pitt chose to play Saturday with 16 players out, Virginia Tech had close to 20 out earlier in the year.

I don’t think FSU cancelled the game because they were scared to get beat. Whenever we play them next, Dabo will embarrass themselves and run up the score. FSU cancelled the game because their program is a dumpster fire. They have had players quitting the team left and right the last several weeks. They barely have enough players to legitimately field a team. They are the ones that had players come out this Summer and dispute thing their coach said to them on a public forum.

If we beat Pitt and VA Tech, we should not spend one dime to reschedule a game in Tallahassee. Clemson was very accommodating in offering to stay in town and play up to two days later. Which would have given Clemson a short week to prepare for legitimate FBS team in Pitt. If we lose to Pitt or Va Tech we should offer to travel to Conway and play Coastal. That would be better than the best bowl game they could hope for.

Florida State should have to wait to get 100 hung on them in Death Valley next year.

Nov 23, 2020, 8:58 AM

to isolate the player on a flight, bus, and in a hotel, but we still thought he was worth bringing?

Our staff stuck their heads in the sand, tried to play the “followed all the rules” card, but they stopped using common sense.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe because they isolate as much as possible anyways...

Nov 23, 2020, 9:27 AM

They have been using 10 buses. That is 8 players per bus. Buses that could hold at least 50 people.

They use masks and face shields on every flight.

He did not have any symptoms Tuesday though Friday. And had a negative test every day until Friday. The 2 days he had symptoms he was not with the team.

As for the hotel....they isolated him as soon as they got the results and then sent him home.

Where is the common sense missed? It is not by our coaches.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's clear that special precautions were taken

Nov 23, 2020, 10:12 AM

for one specific player. DHood's own words.

We isolated a player for 2 days because he was symptomatic of a virus with a median 4-5 incubation period. We took him out of isolation because of our own testing. He failed the first third-party test he was administered.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Incubation period?

Nov 23, 2020, 10:21 AM

An incubation period is the time between when you contract a virus and when your symptoms start. Incubation period would have been up....symptoms detected. All tests negative during that time frame.

As for testing....questioning the integrity of our testing? You think we want to spread this?

I will agree to disagree here.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Incubation period?

Nov 23, 2020, 2:43 PM

"Over the 4 days of infection before the typical time of symptom onset (day 5), the probability of a false-negative result in an infected person decreases from 100% (95% CI, 100% to 100%) on day 1 to 67% (CI, 27% to 94%) on day 4. On the day of symptom onset, the median false-negative rate was 38% (CI, 18% to 65%). This decreased to 20% (CI, 12% to 30%) on day 8 (3 days after symptom onset) then began to increase again, from 21% (CI, 13% to 31%) on day 9 to 66% (CI, 54% to 77%) on day 21."

https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M20-1495

I certainly don't think that we want to spread anything. But the chance of a false-negative is still enough that I'd defer to common sense regardless of conference protocols. Common sense, in my opinion, is not bringing a player who recently showed symptoms.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So 4 false negatives...okay.

Nov 23, 2020, 2:55 PM

Symptoms were on Sunday and Monday. Not Friday. He would have already gone through the incubation period.

And here is the kicker....he was symptom free Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Clearly you believe that our staff's caution is an admission of guilt.

Funny, but wasn't it just last week when Dabo said "guys are getting sick from bugs not Covid-related"?

Seems there's a lot of reasons to be cautious with these young athletes. By your expectations--notvthe ACC's--anybody who sneezes on Sunday shouldn't travel on Friday regardless of how many negative tests he has, and if they keep him isolated it's because they suspected his tests were wrong?

You're a piece of work.

Just curious: 2 + 2 = ?
