Does the portal have some good?
Dec 4, 2021, 1:13 AM

Before we begin: - Yes I am a new account - Yes I’m an alumnus - No I’m not a coot - No I’m not inclined to prove anything
The question is directed toward college football as a whole. There has been a relatively stagnant pool of teams in the playoff. Fortunately we have been part of that pool. Putting that aside, does the portal weaken the powerhouse teams that stockpile talent and redistribute and strengthen the 2nd tier schools? Is that a good thing (for the sport, not Clemson)?

It saves Dabo the trouble of having to revoke the scholarships of underperforming players who are not ALL IN. Look at it as mediocre players gifting their scholarships back to the team to be spent on better talent.

Agreed. My only concern with that is we need some those guys. First, for general depth. Second, some of those will eventually blossom into solid players when we need them. If Cornell Powell transferred in year 1-3, nobody would have batted an eye yet look how he turned out for us. There are plenty of examples of this.

I agree. I also think there will eventually be some more rules around all this when we go to a super conference. I mean honestly other than Chase Brice who have we lost that would have helped us this year?

I’d say it’s good for parity but a lot of powerhouses

Have been able to pick up contributors.
Clemson is going to have to find some good guys in there we can bring in for depth

In doing so, do you think Dabo is going to have to soften some of his standards? Several of these guys are leaving for lack of playing time. Is that a sign of weakness/selfishness? What about someone like Rattler who came in as a hothead and hat to be humbled? Is he off limits?
In other words, what scenario of someone being in the portal doesn’t have any red flags with it?

One thing I haven't seen with the portal

How can you tell if someone in the portal is academically eligible to get into Clemson? SEC schools can pretty much pick anybody in there because their academic standards are so low, outside of Vanderbilt's self imposed standards.
Rattler was kicked off of his high school team his senior season for violating some kind of code of conduct, so he's probably never been even considered by Clemson and I doubt Dabo will change his mind on him, imo.

Maybe he’d view him someone he could redeem, a young man who could turn his life around if he embraced Clemson values. Chad Kelly didn’t, but Rattler might. Dabo uses football to grow men.

ESPN+ shows all in the portal and potentially where they may land. We have 4 or 5 on the list. all either going or gone, and we’re not listed as any potential destination. USuck and quite a few ACC teams are listed as potential landing spots.

For top programs

As a short term negative, It’s an instant hit to back ups. It hurts our We Too Deep. These guys are probably not getting playing time. But as we seen this season, with injuries they might have seen more if they stuck around.
As a long term positive to the top programs, more spots open up for recruiting new talent.
For lower schools accepting these transfers, it’s instant talent and can be a boost to the win column.
But let’s face it, they are leaving because they aren’t good enough to get playing time.
Unfortunately, many players aren’t chosen and that’s the end of their career. Some find a home and have a ok year. Very few have an outstanding year and are noticed. Most disappear.

The portal is good for your elite teams, but that's about it

Saban, Dabo, and Lane Kiffin have had some really good opinions on the portal. It will create a larger divide in the haves and have nots.
So, it's certainly not good for college football if the goal is to create more parity.
Saban and Kiffin both agree that good players on bad teams get a little frustrated and will look transfer to good teams.
Then the bad players on good teams will transfer to bad teams because they want more playing time.
Meanwhile, the good schools continue to recruit elite high school talent, while filling in roster gaps with great players from "bad teams".
The winners are your top schools like Bama, CLemson, UGA, Ohio St, etc.

To this point, you can’t include us in the transfer portal winner column

Hopefully that will change in the future
