I'm not sure there is any other way to protect and still be able to see it unless they did a cage and that would be really ugly and some dumba$$ would probably still find a way to damage it.
If they could take this and make it rise from the ground for games (without the cover of course) now that would be really cool.

When all the humans have been destroyed by nuclear war or robots or a giant asteroid or what have you, there will still be a rock standing on top of that 30 foot hill we all know and love (stadium or not). Pretty sure the rock will be better protected than the hope diamond in that thing.
