Fishing - Upstate Trout - Part 01

Returned to Table Rock and the Chattooga River for the first time in over 15-years.

This time I had my son with me for our first ever father/son camping trip. It was an incredible experience. Glorious weather. Camping, hiking, and fishing. Over 20 trout during three days of fishing. Brook, Brown, and Rainbow.

Will post some more photographs from our time at Table Rock, the South Saluda, the Chattooga, and Clemson (first time at a Clemson baseball game in 18-years).

The Upstate is a beautiful place. If you live there, take some time to enjoy it. There is something in these hills!

I love trout. The put up a nice fight and have the best taste of any freshwater fish. I just wish I lived a little closer to trout waters than I do.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a six-day float trip down the Middle Salmon River, Idaho, through the middle of the Frank Church Wilderness. The fabled "River of No Return". Blue ribbon waters and all catch and release. That's ok because I found some nice holes in Wyoming last year and got tired of eating trout for a while. Out there in some places the brookies are the invasive fish with high creel limits.

short period of time. Was able to squeeze some fishing in. What a beautiful part of the country. I caught a bunch of Brookies in Oregon. Managed a couple of Cutthroats in Wyoming. Incredible places, enjoy your trip - take photographs and share :)

Fished the Bighorn in southeastern Montana 16 different trips over past 25 years. Always lots of good fish, often 20 plus inches on #18 and #20 flies. Getting too crowded now though. If you hit the water at 0600 you can still avoid most of the Orvis Lodge crowd having their gourmet breakfast.

Just fished the Big Horn last weekend and caught plenty on #20 #22 zebra midge. It wasnt crowded but it is winter. I was down in Wyoming though when it comes out of the Wind River Caynon. Great time.

The Beaverhead River is good in that area too. There’s a spring creek/agriculture recovery tributary to the Beaverhead called Poindexter Slough, which is dynamite brown trout water. It’s like fishing the famous MT spring creeks, yet its public water. I only saw one other car parked there so shhh! I like the Madison but the Ruby is my all time favorite. Psst Woodson Ranch. The FS section up high is a blast too. It’s the creek/River all the guides fish of their day off. Again shhh! I could so live out there if I didn’t have job and family here.

Fished the Middle Fork last September/October and had a blast. Only saw one other person fishing over a 3 day period. Take a lot of dry flies and have fun. Absolute beautiful scenery. Live in Montana now. Hit me up if you have any questions about the fishing or other good rivers to fish while out here.

They also live in places that are easy on the eyes too.

Time is the most important thing a parent can give to their kids. Most kids rarely remember things you bought them, but the time you spend with them seems to last forever. Your son will remember this camping trip for a life time.

Glad you guys had a great time.

Carp are very much under appreciated as a game fish in the U.S. unlike much of the rest of the world. In fact they are considered as trash fish. They put up an excellent fight and they are no where near as dumb as brook trout in particular. Brown trout are more cagey than rainbows, but no self respecting carp would be so eager to impale itself on a hook like a brookie.

However, carp are ugly, bleed a lot and definitely aren't the best table fare, but are definitely better than the golden dorado of Argentina which is a gorgeous fish that fights like it's mouth is on fire.

Carp live everywhere including some fetid backwaters unlike the noble finicky trout.

Lastly, carp are derided as bottom feeders which they definitely are.

However, anyone who's spent much time where the big rainbows live in Alaska, know that those big rainbows get that way from vacuuming up the rotting tissue left behind by dead salmon at the end of their spawn. Ah, the noble, pure and beautiful rainbow.

I am proud of you Tbalm for showing your version of a golden trout. Carp need more good PR.

The problem with Florida is Gators, Canes and Noles and I don't like any of them. Plus, I am no fan of hot all year long.

Awesome pics. I started my father son fishing/camping trips last year on the chattooga with my two boys 3/5. This will be year two and they are itching for spring. Planning a long weekend and will come down the mountain for the spring game and head back up for more waterfall hikes and trout fishing.

I'm surprised to learn that anyone's favorite freshwater fish to eat is trout. Although I have fished for them often, they are my least favorite fish to eat. No, you cannot cook them so that I would like them. What ever way you are considering, I have tried already.
