Trump administration scraps plan to abolish FEMA, Washington Post reports

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has backed away from abolishing the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Washington Post reported on Friday, ahead of the president's visit to flood-hit Texas.

No official action was being taken to wind down FEMA, and changes in the agency would probably amount to a "rebranding" that would emphasize state leaders' roles in disaster response, the Washington Post reported, citing a senior White House official.

It sounds like their new job going to be "We don't do that anymore. You need to call this guy for that."

FEMA should not be scraped, but I do agree with trying to put state officials in a position to be able to source supplies to hard hit areas in a more timely fashion.

FEMA is a ponderous entity that is anything but nimble in a crisis.

Private entities are usually better equipped to perform in the immediate wake of a crisis, but there should always be a role for FEMA.

Reforming the process of emergency response is a reasonable goal. It was foolish to even contemplate scrapping FEMA much as it is foolish for some who advocate abolishing ICE, the police and prisons.

Dumb is dumb whether advocated by the GOP or the Dems.

FEMA extensively uses contractors for emergency & recovery services

Challenge is to execute those contracts without fraud and waste in a very rapid fashion in an environment that has been devastated by a regional emergency. An area impacted by a regional emergency frequently has significant power, communication and logistical problems.

Sounds easy until you get into the details.

The reporting requirements for FEMA are so tedious and onorus that the agency reimburses for the consultant the local and state governments have to hire to meet these reporting requirements

Adding yet another layer of cost to us the taxpayer

Well "rebranding" was the reporters term so who knows what that means. I think reasonable people can agree that FEMA, in its current form, isn't working very well and hasn't in a long time, if ever. A restructuring of how its configured and a recalibration of its duties is long overdue. Eliminating it and starting over entirely was apparently the previous plan but guess they think that would be bad optics for the morons who get their news from pravda media.

Kristi Noem making it mandatory for her to sign every check over $100k. Seems efficient. Guaranteed she got this idea from Donnie’s Covid checks. Glad they are adding more red tape. If only there was a Department Of the Government that would actually focus on Efficiency…
