Just get Kelly some reps and move on already. Good gracious, it's the same song and dance.

Re: Stoudt 2.0

Sep 15, 2015, 2:34 PM

Exactly. I was steaming for months about the "best chance to win" statements last year with Watson not starting the first three games. Let's just hope he stays healthy and we don't need a backup QB.

Re: Stoudt 2.0

Sep 15, 2015, 2:41 PM [ in reply to Stoudt 2.0 ]

Agreed. The difference is apparent to everyone, including Dabo. I like rewarding time spent and dedication as much as the next guy, but in this case, Kelly is obviously a better option for Clemson's success. The difference could cost Clemson games. Schuessler has a much higher chance of turning over the ball. Where Kelly may lack in knowledge, he more than makes up for in athletic ability and protecting the ball.

Re: Stoudt 2.0

Sep 15, 2015, 3:11 PM

There's more to it that that. If it was so apparent, Dabo would be going down a different path. The coaches see them everyday in practice, and know their physical and mental makeups. Easy for us to see them in a few series and think we know best. It's what makes these boards fun, I guess. I'd rather assume the coaches know what they're doing, or they wouldn't have gotten this far in their careers. What if Watson had gotten blown up on his first play last year against Georgia? What would have been the ripple effect? I agree that it appears Kelly is an extremely gifted athlete and has a bright future, but I don't jump to the conclusion that the coaches aren't trying to play the best ones, based on what they know and we don't.

I hear you and trust Dabo and all his coaches to do the right thing but some kids are superstars on the practice field and tank under the lights. Others don't practice as well and are simply gamers. Bryant is a gamer, Nick is a tanker.

Spot on - Kelly is a player that will make things happen. If there's a busted play - Nick isn't going to get it done. This is about Dabo and his loyalty to the players - just like he was with Stoudt. Tired of this -

Sep 16, 2015, 12:12 PM [ in reply to Re: Stoudt 2.0 ]

By end of year Kelly will probably be the #2 QB. Guys, we don't go to practice, we aren't in film sessions. Dabo says potential. I trust the coaches. They know what each guy is capeable of. I remember last year everyone was screaming for Nick when DW was hurt. Now he can't walk and chew gum at the same time. Give it a rest. There is a reason nick is 3 2 and we don't have the full story. Let the coaches coach and enjoy the season.

Sep 15, 2015, 3:07 PM [ in reply to Stoudt 2.0 ]

Field is on an entirely different level than stoudt. Cole wasn't highly recruited regardless of what anyone says, he was a 2 maybe 3 star recruit which tells you right then he's most likely backup bound. Kelly on the other hand is a 4-5 star with way more athletic ability than stoudt ever dreamed of having. Is he Deshaun watson? No, but I truly believe he's going to be one of the best qbs that has played here even if hat takes a couple of years which is perfect seeing as DW will be here atleast this one and the next. Deshaun watson is the best qb we have ever had and it's not really even close. Talent like that coupled with a football iq that is unheard of in most seniors let alone a freshman or now sophomore. Deshaun Watson is an extremely rare player but I think Kelly Bryant is a rare one as well.

Sep 15, 2015, 8:25 PM [ in reply to Stoudt 2.0 ]

Not sure why people don't get that.

You don't put freshmen in position to get their confidence rattled until you are sure they can handle it. You also don't destroy your other backup quarterback by throwing him under the bus.

Swines has handled this situation and last years situation with perfection.

Re: you never want to destroy your quarterbacks confidence

Sep 16, 2015, 2:24 PM

I agree. Coach wants to slowly build up Kelly's confidence rather than putting him in a big situation only to risk failure. By passing Nick at this point would not help him either. I would not put too much stock in what we've seen so far in the first two games. Both qbs will get better as the season progresses. Besides, Clemson does have Mr. Watson in there.

Re: i don't care what they "see" in practice.........

Sep 16, 2015, 12:54 PM [ in reply to i don't care what they "see" in practice......... ]

Please stop comparing Stoudt to Nick Scheussler. Nick is nowhere near the quality QB that Stoudt was. Stoudt's worst day is better than Nick's best day - so can we just stop acting like they are the same? Stoudt deserves better than that.

One example of his potential vs Nick - IMHO No way Nick makes the play Kelly did to get that ball out of the end zone the other day.

It is clear Kelly needs to be our number 2 guy right now, what gives?

We said the same thing during Dabo/Stoudt vs. Watson...

Sep 15, 2015, 3:31 PM

Now we know it wasn't true. DeShaun was an early enrollee and had learned the playbook by the start of the season. Stoudt was just starting because Dabo wanted him to start.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no, you are not...

Sep 16, 2015, 2:10 PM

Considering how knowing the plays translates to the field and the culture. Talent can't do that. Only practice can. Don't try the "he played in the same system" argument either. When a guy has not demonstrated he will run a play as designed, that play comes off the table for game time. If DW could have only run 25 plays out of 120 possible and Cole could run 100, by definition Cole gives us the best chance. It's that simple.

I remember people wanting Cole to replace Boyd. How would that have worked out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have we seen Kelly throw the ball more than 10 yards?

Sep 15, 2015, 5:08 PM [ in reply to This is one of the ONLY issues I have with Dabo ]

with the vanilla playbook, Kelly's superior athleticism is going to make him look good but if he can't throw the ball then he's a one trick pony.

Can we win with pure wildcat/zone read? I doubt it. Never mind the injury issue it brings up with a someone as slight as Kelly, at some point he'll have to throw. To put it simply, can we win with the offensive playcalling we had in the Wofford game? That's Kelly's offense at this point. (Heck, it'll probably be mostly Nick's offense as well which is why Watson's health is so important to maintain)

This isn't to say that Kelly won't be the backup to Watson very soon, but at this point I don't think he's ready. But then again, maybe he can throw the ball and they are just hiding that fact and when the chit hits the fan and someone has to go in for Watson, the coaches will pick Kelly.

Re: FB Update: Swinney says Kelly "probably has as much potential" as Watson

Sep 15, 2015, 4:57 PM

Kind of funny...but last year we were begging for Schuessler to come in, when a slightly injured (physically and psychologically) Cole Stoudt had to play for an injured Watson. Kind of makes you think that when Watson was injured the statement "Cole gives us the best chance to win" was correct. I to believe Bryant has more talent, and has greater potential than Schuessler, but he is also a True Freshman, and the vast majority of us have not seen him play but very few snaps in a game. Coach knows what he is doing, because he has seen these two in practice every day since spring camp.

Re: FB Update: Swinney says Kelly "probably has as much potential" as Watson

Sep 16, 2015, 12:16 PM

be careful this board can't deal with logical thinking

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bryant needs to get more of Scheussler's minutes.

Sep 15, 2015, 5:47 PM

I get the fact that Scheussler has been around longer and knows the playbook better. I realize that the coaches see these guys in practice everyday. But it is painfully obvious that Bryant is a better QB than Scheussler. Bryant will overtake him within the next 2-3 weeks as our backup. If not, it will show me that the coaching staff learning nothing last year by continuing to play and promote Stoudt over Watson when Watson was clearly the better QB.

Sep 15, 2015, 8:44 PM

Dabo knows Schuessler's limitations. Dabo knows the season is riding on Deshaun more than any other player or coach including Dabo. And he knows it still takes the entire team along with Deshaun's talent and poise to win the big games.

His "coach talk" is intended to reward Schuessler for his loyalty and motivate Kelly to keep working hard. I understand why anyone in Tiger Land could be chapped since Dabo started Stoudt over Watson early last year. But we're OK here guys - nothing to see but "coach talk".

#2 should be #2. No questions asked. This won't even be an issue next year when Zerrick Cooper gets here. That's when #2 may move to #3. I may be wrong, but Cooper is a "Watson-esque" talent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Z-Coop

Sep 15, 2015, 11:14 PM

Come next year we are going to be absolutely loaded at QB. We add Zerrick Cooper and from what it sounds like he is athletic freak. Clemson coaching staff has finally figured out that with our type of offense that great dual threat QB's are the best way to go. Honestly its going to be tough next year just to fiqure out the rotation behind Watson, because there is so much talent. Bryant, Cooper, and Israel. Honestly I think we should redshirt Cooper. I'm honestly just excited because we are steadily reloading.

OK. I rarely rant on here but enough. I apologize to the more sensible folk but this is out of hand. While I admit I am starting to cringe when Nick comes in, I am embarrassed and feel like this board should be in Columbia by some of the Comments. The guy that said he HATES Nick, are you serious? Did he key your car? Steal your girl? Heck, cheat on his taxes even? No, he's a kid that goes to practice every day, busta his @$$ and stays put of trouble. He was offered a chance to come and be a Tiger. Would any of you have turned it down? To play even ONE snap at QB for Clemson. He's been a good team mate to all and not a problem. Is he great or even good? I'm not sure myself. But come on, yall don't get personal. And saying you hate Cole? Another kid that did all things the right way. And busted his tail last hear grinding when anyone could see he was hurting badly. I'm sick to death of it. Cole this Cole that. If he never made yall happy at least get off his back, he's graduated and gone. For Pete's sake. Heck DeChaun Cameron threw a pick six and cost us FSU first ACC game. I'm not still harping on it. Would I rather see Bryant? Yeah, I would. But dang people. And for the record, while I support Nick S. as a Tiger, to say he's anywhere near as talented as Cole is also just plain... well sorry DUMB. Cole S. Was at least invited to an NFL camp and could still make a club down the road. Something I doubt most of us will ever do. GO TIGERS. ALL OF THEM!

Bryant will be a star. His ceilings is very high, much higher then schuesller who will not get better. Let's not forget though that Bryant is just a freshman and needs to learn the playbook and get more seasoning. On another note, dw is a once in a lifetime talent who we were fortunate enough to get that played in the same offensive system in high school. My friend told me that dw was special and I laughed in his face, but ever since he became a full time starter I am all in.
