Here's a premise:

Public schools in urban areas are becoming a child care dumping ground, with education occurring in private schools.
Someone should look at whether that is true, the degree of it, and why. Empirical data please, not confirmation bias, correlation as causation, anecdotes or ideology.

The worst part, the kids that rely on breakfast and lunch in order not to starve. Let’s talk about those kids. Or the kids who are left with abusive parents day in and day out. It’s truly heart breaking and there is no benefit. It’s ridiculous.

backpacks filled with food for kids to take home on weekends so they can eat until Monday. It's that bad.
The most effective non profit in Greenville is, imo, The Frazee Center, which is an after school program for kids in the inner city. Kids arrive after school, stay until 5:00. Is a haven from what would otherwise await them at home. While there they rotate through four segments consisting of play, meal, schoolwork and tutoring. It is regimented, no b/s is tolerated, and they are taught and held accountable for strict behavioral standards designed to teach 4 principles: Work hard, Respect authority, Love everyone and Forgive quickly. The kids love it.
I won't get into more than that (one example below) except to say one has to go hang out there for a day or two to see what is actually happening with inner city kids now. The director, Matt Reeves (played football at Clemson), would love to meet anyone who wants to see it.
I was there one afternoon, Matt and I were on the gym floor talking, and a volunteer crew rushed by with a mop bucket into the bathroom. Matt didn't even look up, just kept talking. Wait, I said, what was that? Oh, he said, a kid pooped on the floor in there. How do you know that? That's just what that is. Happens all the time. Wait, these kids (K through 5th grade) don't know how to use the bathroom?
No, he said, that's not it. Psychologists say that when a male child is being forced to have sex, he will poop on the floor. They don't know why that is, but it happens. A potty trained child who willfully poops on the floor, he's having sex at home. Its just a thing.
You act like this happens all the time. It does. How many kids in here are having sex at home? Boys and girls combined? 70%.
None of the above is commentary. It is what is. That's what is coming through the public school front door every day. On one hand, compassion requires that whatever cultural forces are causing that have to be addressed. On the other, rationality requires us to understand that little education is occurring in that building under current methods.
