I saw them live when I was 12. My first concert. Under the Blood Red Sky. They were good. They are a good band. Maybe overrated, but they are good.

I suppose stuff is fine, but I don't know that I want to hear it at a concert either. Maybe my opinions would be a bit different now after listening to the likes of American Aquarium, but I don't know.
People in this thread are defending them better than they time in the last year or so I listed out the songs I knew and nobody tole me to go listen to so and so songs instead.

I was raised during the worst musical generation, 10 in 1980, 20 in 1990
The music from the 60s, 70s, 90s, and maybe even after (ok maybe not) are all better than the junk put out in the 80s
Give me: Prince Talking Heads (better in the 70s) Metallica Public Enemy and Devo (better in the 70s)
And that's really about it. You can keep most of the rest of it

Van Halen, GnR, The Pixies, The Smithereens, The English Beat, Tears for Fears etc, etc, etc.
Even pop was better in the 80's, with bands like The Go-Gos, Bangles, and Duran Duran having actual talented musicians in the band writing and playing good tunes.
The fact that you put a semi-talented band like Metallica on your list tells me we probably won't reach consensus on this.
Apparently you really have a thing with music somehow making you sad, so I won't even get into excellent alternative bands like The Cure, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Violent Femmes, 10,000 Maniacs, The Meatpuppets, Midnight Oil, The Jam, or most definitely, The Smiths.

Van Halen was a 70s band. The Cars best record was also in the 70s
The Police are ok I guess
The Cult did things everyone already did in the 70s
I consider RHCP a 90s band
You can keep REM, Cure, Smiths

Metallica ripped off Motorhead and Pantera and was totally derivative.

The riff from Enter Sandman, one of their biggest hits, was swiped from Soundgarden. James Hetfield didn't even have his own style. He heard Chris Isaak and told his producer he wanted to try to sing like that (he failed). They changed nothing about music. Jane's Addiction (another great 80's band) changed rock more than Metallica ever did.
Van Halen had 6 platinum albums in the 80's. Sure they formed in the 70's but they only put out two albums in the 70's, and they were 78 and 79. They're far more a part of the 80's than the 70's.
"The Cult did things everyone already did in the 70s". Ok, like what and like who?
RHCP formed in 1984 with the original lineup and put out multiple good albums in the 80's. You just tried to use the same argument against Van Halen---can't have it both ways.
On top of that, earlier you mention Public Enemy but ignore that probably some of the greatest rap ever came out in the mid to late 80's. Eric B and Rakim? EPMD? BDP? NWA? De La Soul?
I think you're basically just using a lot of logically incongruent arguments to say that your musical preferences are pretty darn narrow more than you're effectively critiquing an entire decade's worth of music, and that's cool too.

I'm down with most of the hip hop, but Erik B and Rakim, De La Soul, etc really didn't change the game the way PE did. NWA changed the game
Enter Sandman was the 90s, and Metallica created its own genre, similar to what Black Sabbath did
Not really sure what the difference between The Cult and Deep Purple is other than Deep Purple did it first and with more talent.
You can keep Van Hagar. Selling records is not the best indicator. Remember all the hype over 1984? It was in large measure because it had been a hot minute since VH put out a record. Is there a better record they put out in the 80s than VHI or VHII? You could possibly make an argument for Fair Warning I guess
Still, eff the 80s, and I'll argue this over beers anytime

when I became old enough to go see live music shows.....until then I only knew of national acts, stuff you heard on the radio and then went to the record store and bought their album.
I saw Mother's Finest. And REM. And Drivin N Cryin. And Killer Whales. And Jason & the Scorchers. And 1000 other bands on 100 different stages.
That was 1980's music to me - a new world.

Straight to Hell also isn't the type of song that is going to make me stand up and say a band is great. It is fine, but I'm not going to go see them at the Radio Room. Looking up songs, the only other one I know is Honeysuckle Blue.

Heck, I would argue we came about during the peak of music greatness. 60s and 70s still played under Classic Rock and 80s and 90s had a crap ton of good music.

several good, maybe even great albums. Their '80's stuff is stellar. several not so good, their "experimental" stuff. IMO, they shoulda stopped about 1993.
never had the urge to go see them live because they'd probably do their "Zooropa" crap. If they did a show of "October" and "War" songs, I'd be there. That would be killer.

They jumped the shark with Zooropa. Some may say Achtung Baby but that was a decent album with some good singles on it. Everything since has been so-so, with the exception of some very fine singles sprinkled in here and there.

"I Will Follow" is the only U2 song I begrudgingly like, today. Maybe there could be other worthy tracks, but I'll never be able to stomach an album long enough to find out. They're in a pretty small group of bands where I consistently skip/turn the dial when a song comes on. That puts them in the same category as Coldplay and Oasis, at least in my book.
