College Football, bowl games, playoff, etc.. all of it is a terrible product

9

Dec 28, 2024, 9:45 PM

As more and more people tune out the whole game will collapse in on itself. I have spoken to several Clemson fans among others that are no longer going to games or watching. The "give a da^^" for the vast majority of people is quickly running out.

I am starting to feel the same way. I can see myself in a few years walking away from it all. Been a Clemson fan for over 58 years.

I watched week one and then tuned out, and honestly don't feel like I missed anything. A few years ago I would not have missed a single game. Now I am completely apathetic. I effectively walked away this year.

tnet-military.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not so. Clemson is a outlier.

More games, more viewership, more money.
That's success by any objective measure.

Sure. Nascar thought so too. From number one spectator sport to empty venues.. guess money wasn't everything if no one cares anymore.

False Equivalence.

NASCAR never had CFB's broad appeal.

NASCAR didn't have 134 franchises.

NASCAR didn't have multiple conferences with multiple contracts.

CFB has built in, on campus live audiences unlike NASCAR.

Funny how that mantra you pound has been repeatedly mythbusted by the facts. More audiences, more live viewers, more money, more games...again, successful by every pertinent objective measure.

If you can't adapt, go away.

NASCAR had more spectators than any sport in the US for years. Define "broad appeal". Currently the top two NASCAR venues could hold 420,000 people so apparently at some point there was broad appeal. Go back to sleep dude or at least educate yourself.

You're spot on with the NASCAR analogy.

The same type of thinking that brought us NAFTA is currently in hollowing out CFB.

All of it comes from the same root problems: greed and selfishness. They destroy everything that allows them to grow unchecked

The deteriorating condition of college FB (which those attentive people among us realize that means college football) reflects the sclerotic condition of the NCAA and how their inability to manage the long term interests of the sport instead of going for the quick-fix financial windfalls from the ESPN contracts.

By ignoring proactive management of how to keep the unfettered / unmanaged NIL environment would greatly harm overall public interest in CFB, the NCAA’s incompetence has put the sport on the precipice of major retrenchment.

As we all know, the NCAA was so smitten with the giant short term media contracts that poured money into the B1G and SEC that they ignored the likelihood that the rest of the country would smell the skunk in the crawl space and lose belief that their non-SEC / non-B1G team would be so marginalized in the competitive environment. Following quickly after getting the sense of marginalization comes the sense of apathy.

Supposedly the NCAA is trying to fix this problem before their current media income goldmine burns out. The sports media giants will learn that national ratings will collapse if the only fans that watch their programming are SEC and B1G fans.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's completely out of touch.

1

Dec 29, 2024, 8:49 AM

The NCAA had nothing to do with "managing" NIL.

The current state of NIL was forced on them by the courts because their entire model violated federal law.

I'm not buying the whole super conference merger of SEC and BIG. So you create this mega conference and alienate the remaining 100 other teams and their fans around the country. Not a good long term plan in my opinion. But what do I know.

I used to plan Saturdays around football. Now I watch if it’s pouring rain and I have nothing better to do. The bowls are an absolute mess with the opt outs, etc. Absolutely no interest in them. I honestly feel like the new system is weaning me away. The weaning process is nearly complete. But you know , it feels kind of nice to not give a rip about college sports as much.

If the house settlement agreement falls through, college football may collapse sooner than we thought. Currently college football has evolved in to Oregon and Michigan being the haves versus everyone else. Clemson is one more IPTAY level/ season ticket price increase away from losing a bunch of boosters.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The sticking point in the House case

Dec 29, 2024, 9:58 AM

is the clause that lets the NCAA interfere with NIL.

That clearly violated the Ohio vs NCAA injunction.
It's being challenged by other athletes.

It's unlikely that clause holds up.

The question will be if that would torpedo the entire settlement or just cut out that clause.

I believe that the financial downside for the NCAA is so big that they would take the settlement without the NIL clause.

Bottom line, the NCAA can't legally interfere in or regulate private NIL no matter what.

Dec 29, 2024, 8:21 AM

It was before everything went to h-e-double hockey sticks in a handbasket and was an incredible last minute win against the best team on the biggest stage. The decline started slowly but is accelerating at exponential speed. I find it increasingly hard to care.

Dec 29, 2024, 10:08 AM

Just watch the games. Go to a practice or two. Enjoy THE GAME. Or just keep beeatching on a COLLEGE FOOTBALL message board about how you hate COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

I still contend that all the gripes about NIL, portal, etc are rooted in the fact that our team has “struggled” during the transition.

Go Tigers! And so long to those who are “done” with the sport.

College Football needs a commish...

Gotta come down one way or the other on student-athlete (Amatuer) or athlete-studen(employee)..

Put TV in a box, NFL did it, they have a good product... college football does not.

They are frog-boiling the golden goose...
