Everyone can whine about the offense all they want to
Jan 1, 2022, 6:49 PM

But I’ll take our defensive minded team mayday of the week over a team like the bucknuts. Everyone’s screaming about how they are always open but failing to realize these teams absolutely don’t play defense it’s pathetic to even watch. With an average offense which will get figured out we will murder these teams because our defensive guys are savages on the field

I think they said Ohio State is missing some players on defense. I haven’t watched them much this year, but their defense against us in the playoffs was just fine.
But, I really can’t stand Ryan Day. If they lose this game, prepare for some heavy whining in his post game press conference.

Their defense isn’t what beat us last year, our terrible line beat us. Nobody besides us and Georgia has had a truly elite defense this year. Like I said I’ll take a killer defense over a killer offense any time

Our defense last year wasn’t nearly as good as this year statically, and they got tired out pretty quick by the offense not keeping up

Pitt had a top 5 offense with a 41st ranked defense and won the ACC.
LSU 2019 had an other worldly offense and a 30-40ish ranked defense.
2020 Ohio state had a top offense and a 30-40 ranked defense
By bamas standards their defense is not the best but they average over 40ppg offensively and that’s why they’re about to win the national title again.
Offense wins period.

We gave those games away because we were terrible until the end of the season. The Clemson team that played the last few games would stomp NC State or Pittsburgh.

We couldn't stop them on offense from the start of the game. Period.
You have it backwards. Our offense couldn't keep up with theirs because we couldn't stop them. They moved the ball all night. Fields threw for nearly 80%, and they added 250 yards on the ground.
We lost because we couldn't stop them, not because our offense struggled.

Nope but I’ll take our elite defense with an AVERAGE offense any day of the week. If our offense was AVERAGE this year we win the natty hands down.

I do not agree. Average offensive teams simply do not win Nattys. Look at all the winners over the years. They are teams that can put up points....lots and lots of points.

Name 3 teams with longer 10+ win streaks in the entire history of college football. You can't.
To accomplish what we did this year with a barely functional QB was a remarkable accomplishment.
Name another decade where Clemson has been this successful. You can't do it.
The fact we accomplished what we did this year is a testament to our culture and coaching.
You sound like an entitled child.

No. I’m explaining to the OP that you MUST have an elite offense and can’t just depend on an elite defenses. It’s not the 80s.
Sorry but I’m not over the moon excited about winning the cheez it bowl against a 7-5 Iowa state team.
Hopefully it’ll be better next year.

You can't say "we didn't win $#!t" this season. No we didn't go to the playoffs, but like I said 10 wins (3rd longest streak in college football history) and a top 15 finish is not "$#!t", especially with all things considered.

Elite "O" + Serviceable "D" =

Since CFP came into existence, there have no times when a CFP winner had elite offense but only a serviceable defense. Even LSU in 2019 had a very good defense if you look at the numerous teams that LSU beat that year which had powerhouse offenses. LSU held their numerous opponents which had elite offenses to modest point totals. Look carefully at LSU's schedule in 2019 and you'll see.
To be fair, there are not any CFP winners in which the defense was elite but in which the offense was only serviceable.
(*) None of the CFP winners had only a 'serviceable' defense to go along with an elite offense.
(*) However, there have been CFP winners which had only a good offense but yet had elite defenses and won it all. Alabama in both 2015 and 2017 had truly elite D but only a good O.
OH State 2014 ... good defense and elite offense.
Alabama 2015 ... elite defense and very good offense.
Clemson 2016 ... very good defense and elite offense.
Alabama 2017 ... elite defense and good offense.
Clemson 2018 ... elite defense -and- elite offense. (Not bragging ... this was true!)
LSU 2019 ... very good defense (really ... look at their opponents with great offenses) and elite offense.
Alabama 2020 ... very good defense and elite offense.
Bama vs. UGA in 2021: Both have elite offenses (but Bama has better O); Bama has only a very good defense (but UGA has a truly elite defense). Much as I hate to say it, UGA beats Bama for CFP title.

Even LSU shifted.. and embarrassed our elite defense. Saban shifted..
Elite defense will give up points.
The rules have been changed to favor offense. It’s not 1985 anymore guy.

It’s not just the QB….
Jan 1, 2022, 7:33 PM

We lack talent at WR We lack consistent OLine play Our play calling was not great And NO our QB was not great.
We have a LOT of questions that need to be answered this off-season on the offensive side of the ball and maybe. Just maybe they’ll all be answered to the good, but it’s more than JUST QB.

We have the talent at WR with some great players coming in, and we have all the OL back with new guys too. The lack of a repeat lineup affected consistency this year.. There wasn't any issue with the original offense and playcalling; we had a QB struggling to execute. Playcalling philosophy is fine. I never said it was "JUST" the QB, but a good, not even necessarily great QB, then we're exactly where we thought we were going to be. We need the QB to be good.

Unless you’re saying we weren’t elite.
While we are on the topic, we haven’t looked elite in several years.
The 44-16 game was our peak. Since then, except for a nice win over Notre Dame to win the ACC, we have fallen flat against top teams (see CFP 2019 and 2020).

We don’t get many opportunities to go up against multiple elite teams in a year unless you make the playoffs. That typically applies to everyone else as well. We fared pretty well in elite game losses to ND with a backup QB last year that we avenged and against UGA this year

JFC - in 2019 we beat three ranked teams including #2 OSU and finished second in the country to LSU and Joe Burrow - whose pro career so far would suggest he was very much the real deal. In 2020 we went 2-2 against AP top 10 teams and finished ranked 3rd in the country. So you’ve chosen to redefine “elite” as strictly being the National Champion so you can perpetually argue we aren’t “elite” unless we win another National Championship - which is clearly the last thing you ever want to see happen.
