ESPN analyst says Clemson's Playoff chance is "almost zero"
Count ESPN's Greg McElroy among the doubters that Dabo Swinney's Tigers can reach a seventh-straight Playoff. For Swinney and the team, a Playoff bid is about the furthest thing from their minds with a whole list of improvements to make game-by-game ahead. Pundits, however, are paid to talk ball and Read Update » |

, insinuating we ran a pick play on Renfrow's game winning TD.
Clemson can most definitely make it into the top 4. If were going to lose then it was good it was early. If we keep winning from here we will climb, and you can't just keep another 1-loss team ahead of us based on a loss to UGA. It's a lot about timing too.
Just win and get better every week, and all the goals are still in the table. Gotta look better though.

Actually a better route for Clemson is for Alabama and Georgia to go undefeated and then one of them lose in the SECCG. They’ll be 1 & 2. Clemson needs to win out in spectacular style in each game and win the ACCCG. And then get help from Oklahoma and OSU stumbling which is more likely than Georgia or Alabama messing up.

You're right. We need uga to have a spectacular defensive year with shutouts against percieved good offenses.
Can't believe anyone that says our defense was "good" and uga was great. Had we committed to the run, we'd have had maybe about as much as they did. It was the sacks. We ran it 10 times... Only 10 times.

Our RBs got 1.8yds per carry. I understand wanting more runs, especially when down on the 5, but why would we "commit" to 1.8yds per carry?

I would rather history sit repeat itself again. UGA can have their annual bedshitting to some random team (my bet is Auburn), then their annual L to Bama.
Maybe we can back-door into the #4 seed, then who knows, but based on game 1, we have a long way to go in order to go toe to toe with Bama or OSU this season.
It will be interesting to see how we handle this and respond. That will define this team, not game 1.

the top 4. We lost the first game of the season against a top 5 team by on TD. Our defense allowed 3 points.
Greg is a Bama homer and SEC hack. The whole SEC isn't going undefeated and Oklahoma doesn't look like it will either with their near loss at home to Tulane.

Without a doubt they are in the top 5. Only Bama and OSU could be better. We won't face a team near that talented until the postseason.

Here's what I don't get about all this talk about Clemson's playoff chances being "almost zero." If they had stuck with the originally scheduled Wyoming game, won handily, and went undefeated, they'd be considered a shoo-in for the playoffs. But they instead take on top-five Georgia, lose a defensive slugfest that by any objective measure was a coin-flip game, and now they're completely out of the picture? What then is the point of "scheduling up?" They're being penalized for it. Even crazier, if they had beaten Georgia, but then stumble once in ACC play, some of these same analysts would be going with the "almost zero" take, citing the lowly state of the conference and the fact that the Georgia game was early in the season.

Just because Greg says we have virtually zero chance doesn’t make it so. Playoff committee looks at this stuff much differently than the SEC hacks. Scheduling up was the right thing to do, now Clemson has to come out of it and show they are getting better offensively. If they do, we are likely playoff bound.

So this is what I got out of that :
1) It took a "fairly good defensive performance" from UGA to hold UGA's offense to 3 points.
2) It took a "remarkable defensive performance" from UGA to hold Clemson's offense to 3 points.
3) The rest of the SEC is so good that it is all but a lock that UGA and Bama will not lose to anyone but each other.
4) Since Oklahoma took care of that power house from New Orleans (that has been displaced by a hurricane and forced to play a home game on the road) by dominating them by 5 points, they are a lock to run the table.
My take: UGA's defensive front and our defensive front are two of the best (if not the two best) in the country. Most offenses will struggle against them. One pick six basically decided this game. No doubt, our offense needs improvement in play calling as well as OL and QB play. The only scenario I see that would keep us out the playoff, if we run the table, would be if Ohio St and Oklahoma also run the table including conference championship games and undefeated Bama narrowly beats previously undefeated UGA in the SEC championship. An undefeated Notre Dame team could also through a wrench in there. Odds are in our favor that Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, UGA and Alabama will not all go undefeated.

In 2014 Big 12 Co-Champs Baylor and TCU both missed the CFP with 11-1 records (no conference championship game). In 2018 Big 10 Champ Ohio St missed the CFP with a 12-1 record with a 49-20 loss at Purdue.

A few years ago I heard McElroy late in the season twice comment that Clemson’s O-line was “just okay“ while fawning over the Alabama stone wall defense and an offense with Tua that nobody could stop. ……Then we blew them out in Santa Clara.
