Looks like he’s headed to Georgia.
Although I believe Gideon will be great, Spiller has been a major disappointment as a recruiter.

I agree so far on the recruiting unless Gideon Davidson turns out like I think he does. A coach whose judgement I trust coached against him the last few years in Virginia and said he’s the best football player he’s ever seen.
His words: “Not only is he an amazing RB, he was an absolute stud at Safety who loves contact.” On top of all that, he’s a good student and even better person. Clemson is getting an amazing football player and I believe he will start day 1.”

Disappointing to hear. Surprised with UGA likely getting another 5 RB commit soon.
Once again, we will be in fall back mode at RB.

Agree. Clemson is identifying good RB's but doesn't seem to have the ability

to sway/close.
I was thinking one of CJ's strengths when he joined the staff was going to be his ability to recruit.

Hate that, but yes CJ has struggled to sign his/our top choices other than Gideon.

When have we ever got a RB from Georgia, that UGA actually wants. And I highly doubt it's CJ's call to offer no more than 1 to 3 backs in a recruiting cycle.

Exactly! And Terry Allen was a DB. We were so thin at running back one spring

that one of the DB's told Danny that he thought Terry Allen played tailback in high school...so they ran him over to the offense.....

He was offered by UGA as a LB not as a RB. He played defense in high school as well. Clemson recruited him as a RB that’s why in ended up at Clemson. He wouldn’t have played RB at UGA.

Exactly. If UGA gets him its because theyre very good, have a history of RBs,

and I’m sure they have plenty of money to pay.
I’d see more as UGA winning him over than him not liking Spiller.

I don't know why we insist on only going after one or two RBs at any given time. Surely there are other high caliber guys out there worthy of offers. Seems like we need to widen the applicant pool instead of always putting all our eggs in one basket only to be disappointed.

I hate this strategy too. It’s bit us way too often.
I know Matt Luke has more scholarships to work with, but he throws offers out to everybody he likes. Cast a wide net and let the ones that want to come come.
CJ himself was a guy who was courted and pulled by being the sole offer, and I think it meant a lot to him. Unfortunately, there are only so many CJs personality wise and we’re also in a totally different recruiting landscape.
QB we only throw a few offers out at a time, but we seem to move on to the next option pretty quickly when it appears we’re not leading the race. I can’t understand the LB and RB recruiting strategy we’ve been using lately.

I'm going to have to pull a lee corso on this one. Not so fast.
Spiller named coach February 2021. So we had just signed 2 stud backs in ship and Mafah. So he didn't recruit 2022 class and we were taking 1 back that cycle. It was kieth Adams jr and I guarantee you that was Dabo's decision.
So, 23 cycle, he signed Haynes and Jarvis green. Underwhelming but his first recruiting cycle and everyone knew ship and Mafah were playing no matter what.
24 cycle, he signs David EZ.. who I think was/is a way under the radar recruit that didn't have the star rating. But I guess you could say CJ underwhelmed that cycle.
25 cycle, he signed 2 really good rated backs. Should he have known that Henderson was a problem, probably so.
Let's see how it pans out this year. In my opinion, I think the jury is still out. Not sure how much is on CJ as others mentioned. Maybe he's not getting to offer but one.

The bigger issue, IMO, is why the coaching staff preferred to put a gimpy apparently shell shocked Phil Mafah out there than anybody else for basically the entire season. Why do all these guys with at least decent recruiting profiles stand on the sideline when the starter is clearly not close to 100%? Could be a coaching issue for sure but also could be a development issue with the guys we have.

Because all of Mafah’s backups were rated very low as recruits, except for Eziomume, a true freshman.
Keith Adams Jr had 0 P4 offers Jay Haynes had 2 P4 offers Jarvis Green had 2 P4 offers
Most recruits of their caliber end up at G5 schools. That’s why Mafah played hurt.

First Georgia and Alabama both could qualify for the RBU title.
They both routinely get who they want.
Did you know the 2016 Alabama team we be beat for a natty had 5 NFL caliber backs.
Yes , they all went on to play for the NFL. Some still do
Now you have the proper perspective of the challenge ahead for RB be it Spiller or any coach.
Burton Burns was the man. Wish he had retired at Clemson. We wouldn't be having this talk.
As for Georgia , they have yet to get a RB commit. Surprising.
So it's understandable if Lamar falls in their lap.
This why I posted an article related to recruiing in Texas.
Looking at recruiting classes going back for years the state of Texas is literally raining excellent RBs.
If you look at the top 50 nationally , 20 or so will hail from Texas.
If I were Dabo I would have Riley aid Spiller for the hot spots in the Lone Star state Texas , Alabama and Georgia can't get them all.
Incidentally , in the link above my fondness for Gideon is noted as has been said from the day he committed. He's special.
On another note guess who signed the best running back in Gideon's class ? LSU. They also signed the top QB.
So it may be a battle of freshman running backs as well as a battle for Heisman hopefuls at QB.
This game is huge. Just huge. If GD shows out who knows , there may be a future Heisman tailback at home who likes what he sees creating a trend that helps save CJ.

It seemed like we had serious momentum at that position. Eziomume was a step up from the previous two classes. Then we hit a homerun with Gideon.
If we do end up pursuing J’Alan Terry next, he’d be the lowest ranked RB recruit in Dabo’s tenure, trailing only Keith Adams Jr, who was CJ’s first signee.
