Kicking Coach? Not under Dabo

We're one of the few major schools who don't have (and have not had under Dabo) a kicking coach. 6 years ago, a major kicking clinic offered to coach our kickers for free, and Dabo turned it down. We reported it on our radio stations in Columbia, but the mainstream media never picked it up.... including Tigernet. But Bama, Georgia, OSU, Miami, and heck, even Rutgers has a kicking coach. We, sadly, do not.

He has far too much on his plate; required to play a minimum of 72 holes of golf per week.(uses both cart & caddy-comped by the university along with green fees of course)

Spiers had one solid year. Otherwise, he was a terribly inconsistent and mediocre punter.

If you think 1 “solid year” added to 4 solid years allows him to be in the pull into the company of kickers who were much better in your estimation you need to go back to school for math. If he only had 1 good year it would be the most diluted of 1 good year of anyone who ever kicked at Clemson before and he wouldn’t be close to where he is.

I would rather have a talented kicker than a coach trying to help someone not talented. We have to give another chance but 3 strikes and you are out. Go get a soccer player.

Gunn came in as the #3 kicker in the country.
Catman was talented. Potter was talented.
We haven't had talent problems at K in a long time.

Kickers and a complete O-line and consistent Tightends have never seemed to be a priority for Dabo. Maybe that's not true but it definitely has not be positions he has developed well.

I understand the how and why our field goal kicking

has been atrocious and some aspects to why it has been the last few games.
I will say this for Dabo. When Catman first started kicking he muffed some easy kicks and when the media brought it up Dabo said that it was a mental and mechanical thing and we would see what he sees soon. Catman ended up being a monster! As for Gunn Dabo said again its a matter of going thru mechanics and if he can't get thru that block then he will be switched. Though I believe Gunn will get through it. Gunn has a monster leg on him. Just needs to find the groove. I do believe kicking coaches are more psychological coaches because you can't coach the it aspect kicking.

I wouldn't want that job. How do you coach kicking (field goals)? Either you can do it or you can't. Georgia has the top kicker outta high school this year and he's already missed a few. Has to be the hardest position in football. It's all about rhythm, timing, and confidence. Gunn will figure it out.

The NFL uses kicknig coaches and clinics for their kickers

And there are many to choose from. One-On-One Kicking is one of the biggest. Kicking World is another. Not to mention Kenny Gordon Kicking right there in Anderson! One of the nation's best.
Doesn't make sense for Dabo not to at least send the kids to a camp or clinic.

My son attended Catanzaro's kicking clinic

several times while in HS. The last two times he did, Potter was there helping as well. Catanzaro stated that he continued working with Kohls Kicking Camps throughout his college career and Potter said he was still working with them at that time and planned to continue. Both said Dabo encouraged them to continue to work with these kicking schools/camps. My son's kicking career was cut short by a back injury and a terrible HS coach but he learned a lot from these and other clinics he attended.

Dude, have you ever attended those clinics that you are talking about? They are a money making scheme.
All college kickers have their personal coaches. Many of the kickers in the southeast go to Dan Orner out of Charlotte, including some of our prolific kickers such as Catanzaro, Potter and Bradley Pinion. If a college has to hire a kicking coach they have not done a good job recruiting kickers. They should come to college ready. It is laughable to suggest Clemson should have a clinic business be a kicking coach

Are you suggesting that Nick Saban doesn’t know what he’s doing? He uses a special teams coordinator with no kicking experience, just like we do.

I thought these power conference kickers have private coaches they work with? Maybe Dabo didn’t want the kickers working with someone that could conflict with the primary coaches methods. Kind of like PGA players don’t have multiple coaches working on their swings.

some credit regarding kickers, not some lame “I told you so” post by someone who can’t even get his stories picked up by Tnet and suggests we copy Rutgers. Sadly, it was not.
BT Potter: At his time at Clemson he set multiple records including, scoring in the most consecutive games in Clemson history, being 54 games, the longest made field goal in ACC Championship game history, becoming first kicker in ACC history to put have four different 100-points seasons. the most field goals made in Clemson history, the most extra points made in Clemson history, and the most points in Clemson history. -Wikipedia

Ammon Lakip: 2014: One of 20 semifinalists for the Lou Groza Award … third-team All-ACC by College Sports Madness … Honorable Mention All-ACC selection (media, coaches) … was 21-28 (75.0 percent) on field goals and 43-44 on extra points for a team-high 106 points in 13 games (13 starts) … had a streak of 13 made field goals in a row … tied for first in school history in multiple field-goal games (8), tied for fith in kick scoring, tied for seventh in field-goal attempts, eighth in field goals, tied for eighth in scoring, ninth in extra points and 10th in extra-point attempts … tied for 13th in the nation in field goals per game (1.6) … third in the ACC in field goals per game, fourth in kick-scoring points per game (8.2), fifth in points per game (8.2), sixth in extra-point percentage (97.7) and ninth in field-goal percentage (75.0) … made all three extra-point attempts at No. 12 Georgia on Aug. 30; it was his first career start … was 3-3 on field goals and scored a game-high 15 points against SC State on Sept. 6; named team special teams player-of-the-game … was 2-2 on field goals and 6-6 on extra-point attempts for a game-tying-high 12 points against North Carolina on Sept. 27 … was 3-3 on field goals and scored 11 points against Louisville on Oct. 11; named team co-special teams player-of-the-game … was 3-3 on field goals and scored 10 points against Syracuse on Oct. 25; named ACC Specialist-of-the-Week; named team special teams player-of-the-game … was 2-2 on field goals and scored 10 points at Wake Forest on Nov. 6 … was 2-2 on field goals at No. 23 Georgia Tech on Nov. 15. - ClemsonTigers.com
Chandler Catanzaro: After a freshman year, in which he only made 14 of 22 field goals, he finished with a field goal percentage of 81.7%, missing only one kick in each of his junior and senior years.Catanzaro was the all-time leading scorer in Clemson history with 404 points until Travis Etienne broke the record in 2020. - Wikipedia

Sad thing is that, back in the stone age; when Danny Ford was head coach, if there was one thing that he concentrated on was the kicking teams. Obederiri, Treadwell. Hatcher, etc.
I know. I'm old.
Now, Clemson can't kick to save their life.

.... the best of the best need a personal coach. Almost every kicker in the NFL has a personal kicking coach. Eery QB has someone they work with on mechanics. Sorry you wasted so much of your time typing a reply that only proves my point.... our past kicker's success was mainly due to their talent level. NOT because Dabo or his staff are expert Kicking coaches. The higher the talent, the more we need to invest in them. We have not. And that should be unacceptable to most.... then again, you defend Brownell... so.....

iHeartMedia, $32B company. 855 radio stations. 110 million listeners every week, and 245 million every month. with $3.5B in annual revenue.
Tigernet, micro focused on a finite # of users w/ just over 260k subscribers.
Yeah, pretty sure I'm the only employee here who knows about Tigernet. And I'm thankful for them. They're one of the best sports-journalism outlets out there. But bad comparison. Do your homework next time before you try to shame someone... 🤦♂️ 🤣
