In this article about college defense's best minds, BV just barely made the also-mentioned list. ... and when he did, he get's credit for having "steadily improved and finished last season ranked third nationally in scoring defense."
It is as if 'they' (whoever 'they' are) sat in a room and tried to figure out how to downplay the defense that was 1st nationally overall and top 5 in nearly every category that matters.
He took a defense which gave up 70 4 years ago and turned them into the BEST DEFENSE IN THE COUNTRY.
... AND BARELY GETS A FREAKING MENTION. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?

a difference in his list.
i wouldn't trade bv for any of them, but there are some #### good ones on that list.
part of bv's charm is his personality. two of my favorite football quotes have come in the last few years from our co-ordinators. nut-cuttin' time at bv's opening presser & then honorable mention was thechad saying "this ain't happiness camp".
good stuff.
our defensive staff got people's attention last year, they've got a great chance to galvanize that this year.

while not technically wrong in my statement: the 'game which shall not be mentioned' was 4 years (bowls) ago ... in 2012 after the 2011 season, you are right. BV has been there for just the last 3 season.

That's all you need to know for the Clemson bias.
Beyond that, he's likely looking at overall in career, not just what they did last year. And in that, some of those names do better fit than Venables across an entire career, including Stoops.
