He may be an awesome coach.... but he sounds HORRIFIED to be on camera.
Dabo is taking a massive leap of faith here.
I've never seen a more uncomfortable coach after a practice.

Where’s Ashton? I think we are being punked.

But seriously, hopefully he is a savant that just isn’t comfortable around the media. He sounds like any of us would suddenly in that spot.

anything to anyone. And he used all the right Dabo-isms.
This is truly a storybook situation to watch. Maybe on par with Dabo's hire.

Dude - go back and look at some early Danny Ford

footage or go look at Dabos first press conf vs his press conf today. (Note and Dabo is a sales guy - Wes will likely never reach that level but talking about the amount of improvement)That #### doesn’t come overnight. He was already better than the Munson interview the other day. He’ll get better each time. 1st time something goes wrong will be his hardest.

conference was so bad that Coach Howard, who was standing in the rear of that large room, immediately made his way up front and rescued Danny by taking the microphone. We all know how Danny coached and how he became more comfortable in front of the media. So don't worry about how Wes looked here.

Exactly! Anyone who watched Danny on camera back in the day cringed at his uncomfortableness. He never got used to it. But as a coach, none better. Absolutely none better! Not Saban or Dabo.

Ever watched a Bill Belichick presser? Totally awkward...

And no I am not comparing Wes to Belichick at this stage(although his nickname is Weslichick)
#1 He realizes he has huge shoes to fill. He will get better, more comfortable in time.
#2 Who cares what he sounds like if he gets the job done defensively.

That's the way I feel because I don't care what he sounds like in a press conference all I care about is how our defense plays. Coach Brent Venables was an attacking defensive coordinator and I sure hope he is as well. With the spread offenses today you have to get to the QB and Coach Brent Venables was one of the best at doing that and disguising his pressure. I trust Dabo above all and he has faith in him.

I loved that he said his expectations of himself are high enough...he doesn't have to worry about proving anything to anybody.

Didn't hire him to be a TV preacher and wow us with interviews.
He will be an awesome coach and I have full faith in Dabos method and approach to grooming these guys. He's 36 and everywhere he's been the coaches rave about his football IQ

envisioned. Wes is not used to being in front of the camera…his comfort level is breaking offenses in half, quickly & play calling. You’ll see how brilliant he is when he gets rolling in games…Wes is like a fricken shark the minute he sees blood in the water…that’s how his mind works! He couldn’t give a sh*t less about the media right now!! Guess u don’t remember how terrible Kevin Steele was in front of the camera when they put him on the spot…he fricken hated it! Wes doesn’t hate it…he’s just not accustomed to it, yet.

I think Wes will do just fine. I never thought Coach V liked the interviews very much. Let’s see how he does running the defense and let his interview skills improve over time. For me personally being in front of a camera is very scary.

Wait - as soon as BV accepted the job at OK, Dabo called Wes
Dec 18, 2021, 5:07 PM

and told him the job was his? DAYUM! That quick, without interviewing him, or anybody else, or checking with TNet for suggestions. It almost sounds like Dabo had been planning for this, and believes that Wes is the best man for the job.

I just watched the interview and I like this hire a lot.
First word that comes to mind is genuine. He is very genuine. What you see is what you get. That goes over real well with recruits, recruits parents and players.
I love the fact that Dabo hires guys that are good fundamental coaches as opposed to making a splash with hires. Nobody’s ever heard of Wes except Dabo and Bruce Arians. I trust the judgment of those two.
I love watching other teams focus on making a splash. Tennessee was making splashes with head coach hires for years and look where they are.
I’ll pass on the splash hires. Thrilled that we don’t have Lane Kiffin, Deon sanders, Mike Leach etc. Even if those guys turn out to be good coaches, they stay for 2 or 3 years at the most. No thanks.
Go Wes !

100% agree here. Dabo does what he feels like will give us the best chance to win. Full stop. The dude won two nattys here. The homework was already done before the coordinators left. It’s how he runs the program and the results speak for themselves.

I hope it works out but it looks like a reach or an economy hire. No DC experience at all so I guess we're now into OJT. Bama or UGA would never have done this.

I think you're saying that Bama and UGa are destination jobs; why can't we be?
Well, i personally think it's mostly because I don't think Dabo wants to raid someone else's pantry.
Brent Venables was only available to Dabo because of a mind-numbingly ridiculous mistake by Bob Stoops.
Besides, Wes is fresh, has no established tendencies to exploit, and has lots of creative ideas. Maybe Dabo is ready to take on a little more risk/reward. He'll certainly get lots of credit if we succeed without having to rent-a-retread coach for a 1-year cameo--like those destination jobs do.

Interviews mean nothing about how he coaches. As others mentioned, Danny Ford never handled the press well.

Just watched. Seems like a great guy happy to be where he is. Heck if I was doing that job the media would not be hearing a whole lot. Interviews would easily be the last thing I would want to do.

I’ve always liked throwing bombs and shaking up the narrative when put on the spot in front of an audience. But a lot of folks don’t. So I appreciate his innocence and lack of coach speak in front of the cameras. I’m sure he will develop it over time.
But most importantly is his ability to lead and coach and make good decisions. In those things, I trust him. THAT will be all that matters.
