we can't achieve the same heights in basketball that we have in many of our other sports, or that Clemson and its fan base isn't somehow deserving or worthy of success there. I'm not sure which is worse, actually - the sad defeatists among us who base the future solely on what we haven't yet accomplished in the past, or the outside trolls who are simply here to needle Clemson fans hoping to get a rise. As passionate and as dedicated as we are about our school and athletics, we make easy targets when someone visits here to exploit that, especially under the guise of being one of us as some of the worst of that lot do.
While the season ahead is almost assuredly likely to offer the same inconsistent performances, tepid enthusiasm, and lackluster coaching chops that have defined Brad Brown L's time here, that shouldn't discount what can lie ahead for us once we are able to finally shake free from this dreadful malaise that we've quagmired ourselves into over this span.
So keep your heads up, Tiger fans. Shake off the doomsayers among us, and starve the trolls. The trolls hate us 'cause they ain't us, and that's fine by me. As far as our own that insist on doubling down on what they see in the rearview mirror - bless their hearts. That's why there's far less leaders in this world than there are followers - it's the natural order of things and there's little anyone can do to change that.
Lots to look forward to in many other aspects of Clemson athletics and the institution itself upcoming. Win or lose, it's always a great day to be a Clemson Tiger.

One thing that used to affect us in football recruiting was recruits did not meet the admission standards to get in school and I don't know if that plays a part. There is a huge difference between honesty and believing that just because we have football and soccer teams that win championships we should do the same in basketball. What you have to honestly look at is why would the Top 50 recruits chose Clemson? That question has to be answered.
Football won a championship in 81 because we had a group of young men who were not highly recruited but were amazing physical specimens and became great players. We won championships in 2016 and 18 largely because we had unbelievably great QBs who had enough talent around them to beat everyone. Our soccer teams have won won championships with a balance of American and foreign talent.
It does not matter who coaches basketball until we get top recruits to even consider a visit. As I have said many times, basketball needs a CJ Spiller to step up and take a chance on Clemson. Recruiting is like the Field of Dreams and we need someone to say I will come because I want to be there.

And who is responsible for recruiting? Hmmm, who could it be? Spiller didn’t just decide he wanted to come to Clemson. HE WAS RECRUITED. The football coaches convinced him Clemson was the place he needed to be.

it matters very much who is coaching.
Right now, we have a mediocre coach, who by-and-large has only been able to recruit mediocre players.
The result has been mediocre basketball.
If we convince a really good coach to come to Clemson and stay (looking at you Rick Barnes) that would be the way to alter the century-long trajectory of Clemson basketball.
We’ve had SEVEN different coaches since 1970, so it should be obvious to anyone that just simply changing coaches is not the remedy.
We need a really dynamic coach to decide he can make a difference at Clemson and then to have the confidence and determination to stay long enough to see it through without giving up and quitting (once again, looking at you Rick Barnes) …

Getting it right is not easy.
We’ve changed football coaches 8 times since 1970.
We’ve actually found the right guy twice.
But we got it wrong a lot along the way.

Don't need an elite roster to win at the highest level.
FAU and SDSU say hello. Teams such as this will never make the football playoffs, but essentially anyone can build a tournament team.

To your point, check out UCONN'S record prior to Jim Calhoun arriving in 1987'ish. They were a complete joke, a laughingstock, and so pathetic the Big East thought about kicking them out.
There's no reason the Clemson can't be a top 25 program. Zero. It's all about leadership at the top, and coaching. Just like Football.
Would it be a slightly uphill battle? Yes. But it would be a lot easier than winning at San Diego State, or FAU? 100%.

Brad Brownell is pretty much Jim Calhoun - just a steeper climb in the ACC. I expect we’ll start to reap the benefits of Brownell’s leadership in another 6-8 years when we’ve been to 2 more NCAAs and he makes a second sweet sixteen. At which point he will be given a lifetime, perpetuating contract, we’ll name the court after him, and erect a statue.
