Smokin Pig's prices have gotten ridiculous.

Ate at the Smokin Pig today. It's been awhile, maybe a year since I last ate there.
Chopped pork plate, two sides. I think this was $11.95, add a tea, total was $14.95.
The food was outstanding and the service was beyond excellent.
I left a $2.00 tip.
So this was a $17.00 lunch for one person.
Guys, this ain't Rick Erwin's or Soby's.
To compare, a Chopped Pork Plate with two sides at Henry's in Greenville is $7.43. It's good, but the Pig is better, but not that much better.
I hate it when a place realizes they have a good thing and then they ruin it by getting greedy.
Yep, I am done at Smokin Pig.

Try blacks smokehouse in Seneca. I honestly prefer it over the pig. Has a much less hectic atmosphere. Reasonable prices as well. Great lunch specials. Open Thursday-Saturday. I've gotta quit giving out my secret places but the owners are so great I want to see them thrive and expand. Cash only there.

While I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment. I can't avoid it. I have to keep taking my business there. It is good and while I think that it is overpriced it is still a price I am willing to pay. Lawyers and Doctors are overpriced too. Still gonna use their services. You might say that is a difference between need and want but I say Smokin Pig is a need.

staff. They are trying to make a living too. If you can't afford to tip appropriately without winning the lottery, go back to the dollar menu. I say this with all due respect but people like you that try to rationalize under tipping bother me. Tip 20% and around the holidays tip generously.....you'll be surprised at how karma works and you may not even have to win the lottery to keep from looking like a penny pinching jerk. Have a great day and come again.

bothers me. Calling somebody a penny pinching jerk and telling him to stick to the dollar menu because he tipped $2 instead of the 'appropriate' $2.25-$3. Seriously?
First of all, always tipping a certain percent is completely illogical, but I know logic is lost with most. If the same BBQ plate had cost a more reasonable $10 instead of $12, then the same $2 tip is more than 15% and now is somehow deemed appropriate by the self-righteous tip police, even though the service and everything else is exactly the same. How does that make any sense?
$2 for refilling his tea is plenty enough. He should be thanked for giving $2 rather than criticized for giving $2. That's the entitlement mentality of today's society for ya. If you want to tip $3, $5, $100, $1 million, fine, whatever, doesn't make everyone who tips less than you or less than x% a cheapskate or bad person.

Guessing you never waited tables...

The government taxes your tips on your net sales not how reasonable the prices are. The hourly wage is still at $2 something it's basically nothing.
It makes a big difference when 10% tippers punish the waiter for prices they don't agree with.
I agree with the OP. If you can't afford or don't want to pay $17 a plate for lunch then don't go there. To take it out of the waiter's pay is just being cheap and/or insensitive.

If I order a $10 meal and tip $3, I'm a good tipper. If I go to the same restaurant and order a $25 meal and tip $3 for the exact same service, I'm a horrible cheapskate and shouldn't be eating out. I'm essentially a cheapskate for buying more expensive items. Doesn't make sense to me.
I've had several jobs where I received tips, but never where I was being paid below minimum wage, so not really the same. But I can guarantee you I would never criticize or think less of someone for tipping less than x%. I just don't get that mindset. Even people not tipping at all wouldn't bother me. Maybe they are cheap, maybe I did a poor job, maybe they forgot, maybe they a left a $5 bill and somebody stole it. I don't know and I'm not going to judge. If the overall tipping is so low that I can't make a living then the owner would have to raise wages or nobody would work there.

I do see your point. The taxes are taken from the gross sales, they are paid $2.25 and hour, and many people don't tip at all yet the servers pay taxes on tips they don't get. Higher priced places are harder on their employees and give them less tables to increase customer service. Higher priced meals benefit the owners more than the staff. So to cut the worker's pay instead of the owner (by not going there) makes no sense to me.

But you are spot effing-on! The establishment has already considered their service staffs job & pay...betting they earn more than the typical $2.25/hr for waiter/esses as well! Tip what the service is worth however & forget the establishment when their offer isn't worth your taste, without punishing those not involved with cost.

While I myself do generally tip 15-20% depending on the service I also think we have let this matter get way out of hand. I mean ok, if the device is horrble, and rude, because everyone else says 20% should you enable that mess? Nott saying to stiff her, but dont put her kid through college either. Tipping at its inception was generally for a job well done. If the service is good, and say after a Big Tiger win, don't be afraid to tip like a Baller. But if service is as bad as a SC passing game, don't reward bad service with a fat tip.

People give what they want and that's that. The poor waitress only got screwed out of 0.19 cents for refilling drinks. Hopefully she can afford groceries this weekend.

The Smokin Pig isn't a "regular" restaurant in that by-and-large the wait staff don't really do all that much waiting on the tables. Every time I've been there the only thing the wait staff ever did was bring my meal (and they usually didn't even do that). If I wanted a drink refill I had to do get it myself. Nobody has ever come by to ask if I needed anything.
I'm not saying I get bad service because I expect that kind of service from that type of restaurant. My tip is however based upon the style of service I receive. In the same way my tip is different for Pixie and Bills vs say Chipotle, one size does not fit all.

I always get the junior brisket sandwich which includes a side for I think $7, ask for a roll and they'll add it on for free. You still get plenty of meat and many times it's the exact size as the 'adult' size.
As for the tipping argument Smoking Pig isn't even full service, definitely not worth 20% unless you're rolling in it. Plus they're system is stupid where you have to wait 10 minutes for a pen just for the privilege of tipping.
Clearly I've been a few times.

much anywhere these days. It is unfortunately a direct reflection of the rising cost of protein, be it pork, beef, or poultry.
Ultimately, it's up to the consumer to decide if it's worth it and it sounds like Smokin Pig has plenty of customers that think it is. That being said, if most people change their minds, the business owners will alter their strategy with pricing/portions/etc.
I feel for any small business owner trying to make it in our economic climate and during a time where the gov't penalizes these regular folks...but I especially feel for the bbq folks based on my own knowledge and experiences.

Charlies, and Mike & Jeffs, and I have the gut to show for it. That's a BBQ plate, or some places call it a Jumbo Plate; big helping of chopped pork, 2 sides w/bread and a sweet tea. They are all around $11.00 (or just shy of it). That's why $17.00 seems way high to me. If people are willing to pay that though, that's great, it's obviously worth it to them.
