Did any of you work for Milliken after Clemson?

I took a job with Milliken's Saluda Plant in 1985. I started out as a Process Engineer developing different polyester and nylon yarn (thread). Since the products I developed were used in so many products, I would have to travel SC, NC, and GA to plants to diagnose problems or work on a new product.
Although I was only in textiles 5 years, the management training and work ethic has stayed with me through stints in electronics, nuclear fuel, tires, and plastics companies. I just sold my plastics company after 25 years, and I will be retiring in 1 year.

I worked a summer in Pendleton in the tire cord area out back. When I graduated in 77 I went to work for them in the Barnwell plant for 5 years. I agree the training was excellent and like the OP, it served me well throughout my career. We sold our company in 06 and I too retired and moved back to SC.

show in Greenville. I was in my early 20s and was just getting started good at Cheraw Yarn Mills. I was looking at a Carding machine and this man walked up and started asking me questions. We talked for about ten minutes before he left. My boss came up to me and asked if I knew who he was. I said John D. Hollingsworth? He then told me that was Roger Milliken. I just said "oh". It took me a second to realize he was a GAINT in the textile world.

My Dad worked for Milliken and we used to live on Otis Blvd which is not far from Roger's house. Several of you who responded must be Textile Degree graduates. I finished in '86 with a Textile degree, however I did not go to work for Milliken.

location after I graduated Clemson. I even worked with Lake Dude over the course of that time.
Quick story about my interview with Milliken. My dad was the faculty advisor for the Textile Department at Clemson. One of the Milliken recruiting coordinators called dad to see if he had any textile students that were graduating that semester. He said he had several textile students that were finishing up, but he also expressed to the recruiter that he had one other student (me) that was graduating in Administrative Management and need a job. That was my first and only interview after college.

Well, truth was that there was a pecking order. Low to mid level managers were not spoken to by Mr. Milliken under normal circumstances while hourly associates were usually greeted with a smile and a handshake. I passed Mr. Milliken in the hallway dozens of times, saw him in the restroom, and even passed him at the guest house multiple times. I seriously doubt he knew my name (of course we had name badges) and am certain he had zero interest in engaging me. Sounds rude, but really it was more eccentric and that was his way. His mind was operating on a much higher plane than the average person and he stayed busy 7 days a week with his "empire" which spanned multiple technologies (including forestry and logging) across multiple continents. So you got a grunt from Mr. Milliken. - I would call that an interaction.

I interviewed with them my senior year (1983). Thought it was going pretty well and was asking all the right questions...then they stopped me and said: Look, we aren't hiring anyone. We've got a contract with Clemson to interview a certain number of students each year...
Maybe it wasn't going as well as I remember...

Happened to me with IBM.
If they scheduled recruiting and canceled them they lost their slot next year, so they came and interviewed when they had a hiring freeze.
Didn't tell me until I asked.

I worked at the Gerrish plant in Pendleton about 15 years back in the good Ole days when I lived in that area. I didn't have a desk though, I was on the floor. I was a nobody lol..sure miss it though

I must have been working at a different company named Milliken simultaneous to some of the other posters. Started in 85 in GFG and eventually did the corporate thing around 2000. Rightsized around 2009. Was around 16,500 "associates" when I started and maybe around half that when I departed. There were 52 domestic plants when I joined and less than half that upon departure. Most that were there long term with me are deceased or have serious health issues. My final two gigs with other companies did prove that normal work environments do exist. Sure it has changed greatly in the past 15 years. More power to you if you came out unscathed or worked at a nice location.

One night I was working on a project when the shift supervisor for the packing area didn't come in.
I looked outside and saw Willie's old Crown Vic parked right outside the main entrance. I walked up to the window and asked if he was OK. It was easy to see he was scared to death. He said he had run over a big snake on the way there, and he was scared to open the door because it may me wrapped up under the car waiting for him to get out. Willie was a trip.

I spent time at both of those plants. Cushman was a sister plant to Saluda at the time. Judson used to make tennis ball felt (among other products) if I recall correctly.

I knew Wilson. Clemson Grad about my age. Worked in a different division than I did but I came to know him at Corporate post 2000. Very knowledgeable manager that came up through the ranks. As I stated in a prior post, the culture could really work on your health. I enjoyed a few rounds of golf with Wilson mid summer and was actually concerned if he might have an issue. Wilson expired well before 60 if I am not mistaken. I think he had a plan to return to a family business and may been in that transition. RIP

I started out at Gerrish Milliken Plant in Pendelton in 1975 and was in training as an IE(MOP #99). After a year was transfered to Judson to be a trainee in Personnel(today HR) and in early 1978 promoted to Personnel Manager of the Kingstree plant.
I spent 7 wonderful years there and even hired Walkertiger as a management trainee. That job allowed him to purchase his dream car at the time, a Mazda RX-7 of which his dad the late great "Mouth of the South" wrote about in his column "Bark off the King's Tree" in the Kingstree News.
One of my favorite stories about Mr. Milliken involved his wife and a friend of hers, Sometime in the late 70s these two ladies were returning to Sparkle City from Columbia in a rain storm and had a flat tire on I-26 just past Clinton on the Spartanburg side. A Milliken truck driver saw their predicament and pulled over and changed the tire for Mrs. Milliken not knowing who she was. Long story short, all of the truck driver's children obtained free college educations!

As a competitor to some of the Milliken products, I can say that Roger was viewed from the outside as a ruthless cheat who stole other inventors' ideas. I worked with a ex-Millihead and he was given the assignment to spy with binoculars at a competitor's plant under construction. He also went inside and looked around and had to file a report.
I also had a friend who was an employee at Milliken who had the most unbelievable sexist stories from within the company you could ever believe. Wild sex parties at sales meetings, etc. In one case a married supervisor was transferred to LaGrange and a few months later he arranged a transfer for his subordinate girlfriend who he was having an affair with. He was subsequently divorced and married her.
Everything was not roses for that JD Power award winner.

Worked at Pendelton for a while in 1973 after I graduated (Adm. Mgt.). Just common labor (I think it was called a Mezzera unit; it's been a while). Wasn't much fun, especially third shift.

Went to work at the Judson Plant right out of school. Hated every moment of it - stayed 22 months and got the heck out. Memories were so bad that I haven’t driven by there since (28 years). There was no one there I aspired to be like. In my case, the grass was definitely greener elsewhere!

I left CU in '66, went into commercial interior design & furnishings sales in G'ville for 2 years b/4 starting my own firm 4 years later..
but understand a bit about the textile biz, your life style, problems, etc since I went with Woodside Mills at their two Pendleton locations (drove to everyday from G'ville in VW Bus) where I was a HR trainee, Asst HR and when I was to be promoted to Head HR (when CU grad & boss #### Sargent left for Coat & Clarke in Ga) I told them I wasn't going to be around long enough and not waste their valuable time & $ on me.
What times & memories these posts brought up in a fairly tedious and competitive industry & environment called Textiles.
Oh, my best CU friend's gentile & low-key Dad was a prof in textile dept (Vernon Walters). Know him?

The famous Gains-McArtur shift schedule with the 6-10 mini shift 6 days a week developed by none other than Perry Gaines, Milliken VP of HR in the 70s and 80s.
Freedom School was a one week exercise in the importance of the free enterprise system that made America great back then. It was held at the Holiday Inn in Greenwood (in Jim Self's back yard almost) for every MOP class. The instructor and owner of that process was a gentleman from Colorado named Robert LaFitte.

I worked at the Barnwell finishing plant every summer while going to Clemson. Upon graduating , I was hired at the Corporate Headquarters in Spartanburg as an Industrial Engineer. The management training program was excellent and Freedom School in Greenwood was eye opening. I was assigned to the Gainesville, Georgia plant as the IE for weaving, slashing and the cloth room. Even though I only worked there a couple of years, the Milliken experience (good and bad) impacted my life.
I met a bunch of great folks and a couple of “yahoos “. Little did I know at the time that I was using queuing theory in determining the number of loom fixers per shift.

Did not work directly for Milliken but did work on a project for them. When the LaGrange Carpet tile factory burned down, I was onsite less than a week afterwards. They were cleaning debris and it was still on fire. A backhoe would roll over some mangled steel and it would flare back up.
Met Mr. Milliken on that project. They made engineering offices in the back of the showroom/sales building across the street from the burned down factory. I was working late one day and this coworker was at the desk next to me and was riding back to the hotel with me. He was a crazy piping engineer from Louisiana.
So Mr. M comes into the room and we are the only ones there and he introduces himself and asks what our responsibilities are. I replied the other guy replied and Mr M thanked us for our efforts and started out. The coworker says in a loud voice to me "I just have one question - who does his hair?"
Mr. M stopped dead still in the doorway and chuckled and without turning back walked off.

I worked for Milliken in LaGrange, Ga for 1 year and then went in to sales in Dallas. I left after 6 years to join Steelcase in Dallas.
I have a number of client dinners with Mr. Milliken and enjoyed listening to his wise advice.

My Dad started at Miliken after Clemson, and he’s been there ever since. Now I’m a student at Clemson so it feels like a full circle moment

Grueling job in the plating department. That was probably the catalyst that pushed me into the military. For that I thank them

I had a summer job at Milliken in Pendleton in the summer of 1973. My girlfriend's father was a big shot for Milliken. He was managing a plant in Cornelia, GA. She told me he escorted Roger Miller in around whenever he was in town.

Never worked there but when no one from our 1970 graduating class signed up for interviews our senoir year a Milliken HR rep came to one of our textile classes to ask why no one had signed up we told them they offered the lowest starting salary in the industry and they over hired college graduates every year whith some never getting a raise or promotion after working there for years, most of grew up in towns with a Milliken plant so we knew how they treated their college grads.
Also irked me when an equipment supplier would ask if they could Milliken personnel in for a visit to see new machines in operation and I always said no because thwy would not allow return visits.

Worked at Milliken for about 11 years. Started as lab tech at Research Center and ended as Senior Development Chemist for Milliken Chemicals.Took many trips to Callaway Mills and flew on company Jet several times- on ocassion Mr Milliken was on flight also. I attended several meetings attended by Mr Milliken and even had lunch at the Guest House.I ended my time at Milliken working for Ashley Allen who later became President of Milliken. An interesting time in my life.

…electrical work with David Electrical Constructors out of Greenville. I was part of the Local Service group. I spent a fair amount of time in the ”Daniel Building” and Buck Mickell’s home out on Woodruff Rd.
I always thought it was cool watching those looms turning out those upholstery fabrics for the auto industry.
I was young and didn’t mind finding myself in the ceiling of a Milliken plant from the top of a 20’ A-frame ladder.
Congrats on your company sale and upcoming retirement. It sounds like it is well deserved.
