Don't believe the SEC hype

Jan 9, 2013, 8:57 AM

Look at the recruit rankings for this year. 3 out of the top 5/ 4 out of the top six are non-SEC teams. People on here want to say that we are losing top ranked recruits to SEC teams. While that may be true it is not because of conference affiliation. The one thing in common with the top ten in recruiting year after year is that they are winning programs. Dabo and company have returned the winning program to Clemson and the top tier recruits will follow. Back away from the cliff. Just because we lose a couple of recruits does not mean the sky is falling. In retrospect I think it is a good thing to get these guys out of here if they are not ALL IN. I have enjoyed Clemson Football more in the last 2 years than I have since the 80's. Dabo is doing a great job and I look forward to more outstanding seasons under his leadership. Go Tigers!

Defense/Offense

Jan 9, 2013, 9:21 AM

The SEC can rightly claim that they are stacked with good defenses, but the league is not known for their offenses. That helps to pad their defensive stats.

I read that Texas A&M had a below average defense in 2011 while in the Big 12 but were to the top of the SEC in 2012. Certainly LSU had a great defense, but their offense was no barn-burner.

Arguably a programs success is based on 20% recruiting and 80% development while in the program. SEC money builds the best facilities and buys the best coaches. The SEC develops better than we do that's just a fact that many do not want to accept. While we are concerned about losing 4* WR's, they are taking 3* OL's and DL's, along with the 4 and 5 star recruits, and developing them.

My point being it's in the development dummy and we are behind.

The development, especially in the OL has been very poor at Clemson for a long time, until this year, I saw us making some real strides. I think that improves under Caldwell. Also missing as of the last several years has been dynamic LB play, and lately DB play. I saw those as getting much better as the season progressed, so hopefully we are fixing the problems, via graduation and via coaching/coordinator changes. I see our future as bright and getting better, but the sec money is a high hurdle to leap. Still we have a great salesman in Dabo, and Clemson is as good a place as there is, so we can get it done.

now more than ever conference affiliation is starting to....

Jan 9, 2013, 9:30 AM

matter

5 of the top 10 are SEC schools

we've lost 5 commits. 2 to ole miss. 2 to florida. 1 to UT

TAMU's recruiting got better "over night" after they announced to the SEC 2 years ago

I used to not think it was THAT big of an issue, but slowly but surely the SEC Brand is taking over...............and while i do think some of their teams are "overhyped"......they do have the best pure talent in the country.......I know they are alabama, but they have 4/5stars on their 2 deep and lots that redshirt

Clemson and FSU need to get out of the ACC somehow

Re: now more than ever conference affiliation is starting to....

we have the highest paid coaching staff as far as assistants in college football. so money to coaches is not a factor. now it has been questioned about s&c, and i agree that evaluation, development, and coaching are very important and almost vital to be a top 10 team. now to recruiting, imo we have done very well but we have to develop more quality o & d linemen and defensive players to remain comptitive on the national level.

I think the "SEC money" going to schools will also start to.

Jan 9, 2013, 10:11 AM

be seen over the next few years.......i think it already has. Yes we do have a highly paid staff (tops in the country) but over time you will gradually see the salaries increase more and more (both for Head coaches and assistants)..........for example if a rival school or rival Recruiting school makes $50million more than you do a year........over the course of 5-10 years that's a big chunk of change, now i know there's more to it and that's a simple example, but i think that's what we are seeing and we will continue to see the SEC brand take over........and it will crush the conferences who ignore the football MONEY.......like the ACC, i'm telling you Clemson and FSU need to get out as soon as they can, if they can.

now on to developing talent. IMO Clemson has lacked BIGTIME in this area in regards to Dline and Oline combine that with the fact that we aren't getting the 4/5star Olineman or Dlinema (until this year) for depth purposes..........bottomline is we are never going to get the 5star lineman CONSISTENTLY like the bamas of the world........Clemson must develop more to overcome that shortfall

I believe that FSU will leave the ACC. Once the SEC

Jan 9, 2013, 11:46 AM

announces (probably during their Spring meeting) their new TV deals, FSU will not sit back and see the money gap in favor of the Gators get wider without doing something about it. I suspect that they will make an exit for the Big 12, which will welcome getting into the huge, lucrative sunshine state. Remember, that FSU along with Maryland, were the 2 schools to vote against the ACC exit fee. FSU has a plan.
