They (auto tariffs negotiations) are progressing nicely - despite all those cries of chaos

There are so many people who have never successfully negotiated anything really important, along the lines of King of the Hill character Hank Hill and his negotiations tactic when buying a car of ‘never paying a dollar more than the list price.’

Neophytes read Trump’s initial tariff pronouncements as representing an immovable gesture of bravado and a commitment to launching a trade war.

Political opponents of Trump have cited his changing positions on automobile tariffs as ‘proof’ that he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Self-described economic experts have simplistically cited the (overstated) cost-to-consumer impact as being the be-all end-all proof that the Trump / automobile tariffs will be a net negative to the American economy.

Blow-with-the-wind politicians (largely people whose only pre-politics job had been a lawyer), not understanding anything other than (1) their media-driven perceptions of the popularity / unpopularity of the tariff negotiations and (2) special interest constituents who have reasons unrelated to automobile-related tariff negotiations for opposing anything & everything that Trump admin tries to accomplish, are deafened by their own ignorant howlings.

Darn it all, despite the cacophony of ignorance and insincerity, the automobile tariffs negotiations are rounding the final turn and looking good for America. Lo and behold, the tariff negotiations are actually negotiations! As if no such thing had ever taken place during his long and successful career as a productive negotiator.

(*). The objective had always been, and remains as, improving the overall well-being for the majority of Americans. We are on our way.

You mean when dumb donald backed off his on again off again maybe sorta on again tariffs, as the auto Big wigs met with him and tell him what a stupid idea is and how bad it will hurt them. Little by little he will fold, unfortunately there’s so much damage being done, which we have not started to feel the full fallout of

PACIFIC BEACH TIGER = Person who has never successfully negotiated anything really important, along the lines of King of the Hill character Hank Hill and his negotiations tactic when buying a car of ‘never paying a dollar more than the list price.’

Negotiations are like Olympic sports. If done well enough, you get a medal. It may not always be the Gold. But it is still a win to get a Bronze or Silver medal. Successful negotiations are not usually a zero sum game. There can be multiple entities that are better off at the end of the process than before the process happened. The losers are worse off; using the Olympics analogy, the losers didn’t get any medal.

Getting a medal is the minimum objective; that signifies a meaningful degree of success. There are ups & downs and back-&-forths throughout the process. Adjustments during the course of the season are a necessity if success is to be achieved.

Appears that, in your world, making adjustments is stupid.

You be you. Peace. Out.

Negotiations are seldom a zero sum game. In the case of the automobile negotiations, America will be the biggest winner. Japan will be better off after they agree to our deal than they would if no deal had been done.

How is Japan going to be better off? Because America will be a stronger country with a secure supply chain to complement a revitalized manufacturing sector. Because this return to America’s self sufficiency with regard to America’s ability to manufacture, unimpaired by supply chain & mfging capability risks, make America a much more powerful defense partner to Japan.

America is negotiating with Japan (this will be a win-win for Japan as well as America).

I’m not as up to date about how America is negotiating with Germany, although Germany is deeply interested in coming up with a mutually agreeable arrangement with us.

As for what has been agreed to at this interim stage (late term with Japan; ??? term with Germany), I don’t know of the micro details, other than a couple of my employer’s customers involved in the supply chain aspect.

I’m not going to disclose my employe nor the specifics of the industry in which my employer participates (other than to say that we are in a materials related business, and that our role as a supplier is not at the direct OEM level). Same as I won’t disclose my age, Clemson degree, or my name.

so what is being negotiated exactly? Assuming we're still talking autos here, what is the win-win nature here?

Donny is caving on auto tariffs because someone finally made him understand how stupid his ideas are. I don’t know if they used blocks, dolls, found some nursery rhyme to co-op for the lesson…who knows, but at any rate I’m sure they asked a child psychologist to help.
