The only people talking about cutting SS & Medicare are Democrats who are trying to scare old people like they always do. Repubs have made a pledge for No Cuts to either but that does not stop the liars from saying it over and over along with their bedfellows in the media.

those programs are the free-bies they give away to their big donors who spend the bucks to market and get them re-elected. Until they put term limits on these people they'll keep doing it. Term limits won't eliminate 100% of the excess spending but it will curb it b/c it gets rid of the entrenchment of these people who carry these agreements year to year. People like Pelosi, Schumer, McConnell all have been in those positions for many years and have many many millions off of the pork in these bills they've passed over the years. And it ain't stopping until they can't do it anymore.

This reminds me of Republicans getting mad about scaring women about losing reproductive rights and then Miss Lindsey throws out the idea of national anti-abortion legislation.

Re: With this talk of cutting Medicare and Social Security....

2

Feb 10, 2023, 10:47 AM [ in reply to Re: With this talk of cutting Medicare and Social Security.... ]

Pres. Biden during SotU:

"Some Republicans -- some Republicans want Medicare and Social Security to sunset," Biden said as he pledged to prevent Republicans from cutting Social Security and Medicare.

Biden claimed that Republicans “say if we don’t cut Social Security and Medicare, they’ll let America default on its debt for the first time in our history,”

He doubled down the next day:

The president pointed to a proposal from [Sen. Rick] Scott, who chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee last cycle, that would sunset federal programs every five years, including Social Security and Medicare, forcing Congress to regularly re-approve them. Biden called the plan "outrageous."

"Maybe he has changed his mind, maybe he has seen the Lord," Biden said. He promised to veto any such changes if they ever crossed his desk. "If that's your dream, I'm you're nightmare," he said.

Flashbacks:

The legislation Biden put forward in the Senate back in July 1975, when, like now, the US economy was in a nosedive, would have terminated “all provisions of law” which allow “new budget authority for a period of more than four fiscal years,” the congressional record shows. The Biden sunset provisions would have applied to the defense budget, and entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

“It requires every program to be looked at freshly at least once every four years. The examination is not just of the increased cost of the program, but of the worthiness of the entire program,” Biden, then 32, said of his fiscal crunch bill in 1975.

In spring 1984, Biden, along with Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Nancy Landon Kassebaum, R-Kansas, proposed an across-the-board freeze on federal spending. The bill would have eliminated all cost-of-living increases in federal employee pay, as well as Social Security and Medicare benefits, for fiscal year 1985. In a joint Washington Post op-ed, Biden and three other senators claimed they supported the freeze because “federal deficits are a clear and present danger to our economic recovery.”

In an October 1984 floor speech, Biden claimed a total federal spending freeze would work because voters “are not stupid…They are not dumb. These folks understand. They know that to cut the deficit, everybody has to be in it.”

In October 1984, Biden supported an amendment to a debt limit bill offered by Sen. Paul Tsongas, D-Mass. The Tsongas amendment would have provided for a smaller increase in the debt limit than the underlying bill, and prohibited further debt limit increases until Congress acted on a spending freeze for the following fiscal year. Biden said he supported Tsongas’ action precisely “because it says we cannot increase the debt limit again until we have acted on a budget freeze”—one that would, like Biden’s spring proposal, have frozen Medicare and Social Security benefits. When the Tsongas amendment failed, Biden voted against raising the debt limit.

In July 2011, President Obama stated that “if you look at the numbers, then Medicare in particular will run out of money, and we will not be able to sustain that program no matter how much taxes go up.”

Fact is SS is in name only we have been borrowing for those funds for a long time.

Someone needs to go in and cut the fat instead of kicking the can down the road by raising the debt ceiling. How bad does it have to get before they get serious about getting our debt under control.

I'm all for cutting "corporate welfare"!

I made this list a few years ago, so it may be a bit off...

According to a Cato report the single biggest item in the corporate welfare list is FHA mortgage subsidies at $15.739B. Cut 'em.

Second largest is National Institute of Health, Applied R&D at $13.845B. Let big pharma do their own research. Cut it.

Third biggest is Farm Services Agency, which as far as I can read their documentation is farm loans, at $11.863B. Cut 'em.

"Energy supply and conservation" is another big one, at $9.834B. I can only guess at what they spend their money on, but I wouldn't be surprised to find Solyndra in that pile. Cut 'em.

Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, $4.834B. Call those loans, then cut the program.

Foreign Military Financing, $5.2B. Cut it.

Small Business Administration (loans programs as far as I can tell), $3.157B. Cut em.
NASA, Applied R&D, $2.799B. Cut it.

Broadband Technologies Opportunity Program, $2.227B. Cut it.

High-speed rail, $1.251B. Cut it.

Below this you start getting into a few billion here and a few billion there. Cut it all!

Funny, though, there's no line item here "Shovel money into Wall Street coffers."

It doesn't really matter the people who keep track of things like this say these programs like Social Security will be completely broke by 2033. If the Government don't quit spending we are going to be in serious trouble. The most horrible of the Democrats ideas is this tax against unrealized capital gains. Meaning you'll pay taxes on money you don't have. They also keep up with this fair share nonsense they are going to push the rest of America's companies overseas. It makes you wonder if the top 55 companies in this country pay zero taxes like Biden says all the time then why isn't Bden's DOJ not prosecuting them? I'll tell you, bc he's lying. The top 1% of earners in this country pay more than the lower 90% of tax payers. The people at the bottom of the tax bracket, yu know the one Dems say are paying more, pay negative taxes. That's right they get more back in taxes than they pay. It's all a grif bc they think you're stupid and that you want look things up. The sad part, they're right. People will gladly be blindly led bc of feelings. Of course you should feel something when the Dems say a teacher pays more taxes than a billionaire, it would make anyone mad if it were true. That's why Dems are so good at messaging. They appeal to feelings. That's why you have activist out there that still spew the thoroughly debunked women make 76 cents of a dollar a man makes. Washington is a joke and until we realize that all of Dems and most of Republicans could careless bout you. It's time to get term limits in Congress and cut the bureaucracy at least by half. I do want to address two of your points.

First, rich people do pay more in total taxes... because they have high incomes. But they can utilize tax laws to pay lower percentages of their income in taxes. That is kind of the point of what Biden (and many) complain about the rich not paying their fare share.

Re companies paying zero taxes, this has been an Amazon strategy (obviously not exclusively theirs). I'm not criticizing it and they aren't breaking the law, but they are kinda gaming the system. Their strategy is to plow any potential profits into expansion, so they could avoid ever paying taxes. It's why a corporate minimum tax rate is a good idea. I have no objection to a company reducing its tax burden by investing in the business, but it shouldn't be able to escape any tax burden whatsoever.

Re: With this talk of cutting Medicare and Social Security....

Feb 10, 2023, 11:37 AM

So let me ask you this. When these corporations pay higher taxes, what exactly happens? well seeing as they own the corporations and they're not going to take a loss of any type, they end up passing this cost to the consumer. So we pay more in taxes called inflation. This isn't rocket science. This is why I think abolishing the federal income tax, RiF (Reduction in Force) the almost 100K IRS agents that make over $100K yearly base salary plus locality pay from 16 to 32% above base salary, increase sales tax. that way I only pay taxes on what I purchase. Remove property tax on individuals about 62 that way they can truly own their own home. Property taxes ensure that when the land and home are paid off the federal government now owns the house and land not the individual.

Lol where in the world are you getting 100K IRS agents making >$100K each? The IRS has like 90,000 total employees (not agents) and only like 80K FTEs. The average IRS salary is less than $75K, the median is less than $60K.

Please, define "fair share".

I'd like a concrete number, how many percentage points of income constitute a "fair share"?

And everyone pays this percentage? Seems "fair" to me.

What's the number?

In any discussion of "fair share" I've ever seen, no one EVER produces a number. The only answer is always just a variation of "That guy should pay more, and I should pay less."

Re: With this talk of cutting Medicare and Social Security....

Feb 10, 2023, 1:26 PM [ in reply to Re: With this talk of cutting Medicare and Social Security.... ]

The CBO produced a report "THE INCIDENCE OF THE CORPORATE INCOME TAX" in which it states

"A corporation may write its check to the Internal Revenue Service for payment of the corporate income tax, but that money must come from somewhere: from reduced returns to investors in the company, lower wages to its workers, or higher prices that consumers pay for the products the company produces...

"The short-term burden of the corporate tax probably falls on stockholders or investors in general...

"In the very long term, the burden is likely to be shifted in part to labor."

So basically, raising taxes on corporations means that ultimately wages are impacted. And investors don't make as much, you know, people with pensions and 401ks.

Corporations do not pay taxes in the same sense that individuals do. Corporations collect taxes that they can expect to be charged by increasing the cost of their products and services. Taxes for a corporation are like rent, or equipment costs, or payroll costs. They are just something that gets figured into the equation saying how much to charge for the products and services.

Good thing the government will be using those 87,000 new agents to make sure everyone pays their fair share...

IRS Plans To Raid Workers' Tip Jars

A coming crackdown on $1.6 billion in unreported tips will continue the IRS' long and ugly history of targeting low-income Americans.

This week, the Treasury Department and IRS announced plans to overhaul existing programs that track tips earned by service sector workers. The new Service Industry Tip Compliance Agreement (SITCA) program will "take advantage of advancements in point-of-sale, time and attendance systems, and electronic payment settlement methods to improve tip reporting compliance," according to the IRS.

Of course, workers who earn more than $20 in monthly tips are already required to report their tips to their employers, and those tips are supposed to be included in tax data sent to the IRS.

But a lot of that money never finds its way into the government's hands. As part of the announcement on Monday, the IRS highlighted a 2018 Treasury Inspector General report that estimated $1.66 billion in tips went unreported during the 2016 tax year.

The IRS' proposal "streamlines both compliance with and enforcement of tip reporting requirements by eliminating employee participation," according to the notice published this week. Translation: We'll make sure the government gets its cut of those tips by simply removing workers from the transaction whenever possible.

"The most horrible of the Democrats ideas is this tax against unrealized capital gains. Meaning you'll pay taxes on money you don't have."

Also right there: taxes on imputed rent. The idea there is that people who live in their own homes *could* be renting them out at market rates, thus creating income via the property. By choosing to live in your home instead of renting it out, you're told that you're renting it to yourself, and thus should have to pay taxes on the "rent" that you should have been earning (if only you weren't so selfish as to choose to live in your own home). So the government could come in and say "Hmm, nice place. I think you could be earning $2000 a month in rental income. Here's your tax bill on $24,000."

SS is something of a pyramid scheme where as long as there are as many people being added to the workforce as retiring the numbers would work out. Unfortunately, we had a population boom after WW II and since the birth rate declined. Was in the news in the 80s and 90s when a small tweak to SS would have fixed the issue. The longer we wait the bigger the change will need to be as the program is no longer solvent and there will not be enough cash flow to mitigate. With all the other wasteful spending and the required borrowing we will not be able to pay out SS at the rate promised. I guess we could cut all other gove spending by ~ 25% and fully fund SS but that is unlikely.

In 1940, there were 160 workers per retiree. In 1950, there were 16.5. In 1960, there were 5.1. In 1970, there were 3.7. In 1980, there were 3.2. In 1990 and 2000, steady at 3.4. By 2010, the number has dropped to 2.9, and by 2013 (last year for which SS publishes numbers) down to 2.8.

In 1940, SS age was 65, but life expectancy was 53.9 for men and 60.6 for women. There were 9M people over the age of 65.
In 1950, SS age was 65, but life expectancy was 56.2 for men and 65.5 for women. There were 12.7M people over the age of 65.
In 1960, SS age was 65, but life expectancy was 60.1 for men and 71.3 for women. There were 17.2M people over the age of 65.
In 1970, SS age was 65, but life expectancy was 63.7 for men and 76.9 for women. There were 20.9M people over the age of 65.
In 1980, SS age was 65, but life expectancy was 67.8 for men and 80.9 for women. There were 26.1M people over the age of 65.
In 1990, SS age was 65, but life expectancy was 72.3 for men and 83.6 for women. There were 31.9M people over the age of 65.

When SS was created, few people were expected to ever actually live to receive it. Fewer still were expected to receive it for very long. It was never meant as a "retirement fund". It was a small hedge against abject poverty in old age.

Whatever it was “meant to be”, the gov mandated taking …

… 6% OFF THE TOP of every pay check I ever received for almost 50 years in order to fund my “small hedge against poverty in old age” …

It is incumbent on the government to make sure I receive the money I’m owed.

All of it!

No excuses!!

Go ask your grandma if she could live without Social security. Stop at church and ask anyone over the age of 64 if they are using it.

Ask anyone, who's older mom or dad lives with them why their parents don't have their own place.

Then ask anyone you know that owns a small business if they took a ppe loan.

Everyone in this country has their hand out. They just don't want the guy next to them to get a handout.

Ask someone who parent have been in the hospital how much medicare covered for that hospital stay? I work in a hospital. Let me tell you. These old folks will be homeless without Social security. Be careful what you wish for. You will find at as your parent get to a certain age

Carlin was a very funny man but he knew his stuff. Most of what he says is spot on and not lies like we hear every day from politicians.
