at midnight last night and those that will undoubtedly be at the same time tonight when this old guy needs a long nap. Wish they would fire them all off a little earlier. Had my share of loud explosions when I was trying to sleep while in the mountains of Viet Nam.

scariest artillery rounds were those from our own unit that were supposed to travel over our heads and land on a mountainside but actually landed just before they got to us. Glad they didn't split the difference and hit right where we were.

One of my combat engineer squads was on a mountain top just north of Danang with a infantry platoon when one of our own recon patrols spotted them from another mountain top ...... thought it was NVA. They called in a 155 willie peter round and 4 HE rounds that landed right in the middle of the grunts .... killed four of the grunts and wounded several of my men... I always felt a guilty that I wasn't with them, but the grunt Lt. stood up right as the HEs were coming in and started popping flares. If he hadn't done that the HEs would have kept coming.
Funny though, as a combat engineer and all of the explosions (IED's and others) I was around, loud explosions do not bother me. I do look down at the ground when I walk, as I spend a year looking for land mines and booby traps on roads and trails. I have found lots of change and even paper money over the years .... biggest haul was 3 - $50 bill in an old coffee stained bank envelope at a car wash!

rested for a few minutes on a clump of rocks in the shade. This was during a major operation with numerous observation planes and choppers providing support. We decided to go back up the ridge to a mountain top and had only gone about 300 yards when a jet fighter came over the mountain ahead of us , dived into the valley and dropped a load of bombs precisely on the rocks where we had been - someone had spotted us from the air and called in the airstrike. nobody would tell us who did it and why they didn't know our position - just lucky we decided to move when we did.

We were so obsessed with body count that the recon units were more focused on kills than just providing information . One of my classmates, John Hoff, from Massachusetts, won the Navy Cross as recon platoon commander. His recon platoon was getting a bunch of kills. The old unit diaries and summaries are not declassified and you can get the reports of what every platoon was doing on a certain day. I found the date that my men were bombarded, but checking all of the recon reports, I too, have yet to find any unit that fessed up to spotting us and calling in the artillery. I was in the Naval Hospital in Guam in 1970 and one of the guys there had basically shot up his own platoon by placing his 60mm mortars behind their position and then shooting directly over his platoon position. He was court martialed and later found not guilty as they could not prove that the casualties were not caused by a short-round or even enemy fire.

Here also. I have two that are petrified of fireworks or thunder. The fireworks went until after 1:00 last night and they are still going tonight. It’s 11:30 and I was hoping they would stop early as people have to work

I don't mind them as long as they are used in the proper place, and housing communities isn't the proper place. Plus my dog absolutely hates them, and I will be giving him a Xanax at about 6 pm this afternoon to keep him from ripping all the window blinds down from trying to see where that noise is coming from. They really pisss him off!!!

I enjoy them in a controlled environment that has been set and operated by the Pyrotechnics folks. But like most, I hate the home use of fireworks!!!

Doctors, hospitals, drug companies, musicians, firework sales, firemen, emergency workers and others that it helps.
If people shooting fireworks can't be careful it's no one's fault but their own. Sure I'm concerned when people of limited intelligence begin shooting fireworks.

I'm pretty sure Fireman, Doctors, Nurses, EMT and the like could do without that crap too..
I like fireworks over the Hudson in NYC or somewhere controlled where the show is huge, but I hate just random booms. Messes with my senses.

Back in high school and college my dum ace friends use to have Roman candle wars. I watched from a safe distance as they aimed for each other’s faces from like 20 feet apart. Good times.

One year I flew from Baltimore to Columbia on the night of July 4 and it was one of the coolest experiences seeing the fireworks from the sky.

Like I have said, gunpowder wrapped tight in paper with a lit fuse pissses my dog off, and I hate having 120 lb Rott going from windows to doors with a deep throaty growl looking back at me wanting me to open the door and let him out. And he is the same way when ever he hears a gun go off, or thunder, he will take off running in what ever direction he believes it's coming from. As soon as I post message, I will be giving him a 1mg Xanax!!!

I love professional fireworks displays. But the older I get, the less I like the neighborhood fireworks. I've accidentally hit too many houses/yards/cars with fireworks parts/explosions, and had mine hit in return. There have also been some very close calls where people almost got hurt.
And finally are people like the jacka$$ last night who decided to shoot multiple rounds of mortar-sized fireworks last night at 11, 11:30, and 12:30. Possibly later but I guess I slept through those. Hoping he got a visit from the sheriff.

Definitely do not like home firework shows.
I did as a little kid when we lived in Sumter. Then when I'd come up to visit in my teen years, I'd stock up on every waterproof M80 kind of thing and raise hell (and make $ off my peers) in the S. Florida canals.
I never went full on with risking burning up the neighbor's home as an adult except once though. I got some big boxes of these mortars as part of a buy more, get more deal at that place in Fair Play. I did one. That was some horse scaring, forest fire starting crap that I didn't need.
I gave them to the local high school's football coach to have his people use, out on the field, for a wet night, in a low-risk area where there was already a loud band and stuff.
Maybe it's that I'm pet and human daddy, property owner, old fart, etc., but I don't think anyone's got any business with anything other than a roll of black cats and sparklers.
At best, people putting on their own shows are obnoxious a-holes (of which I clearly used to be).
