DJ has less options than he thinks considering what he wants
Dec 6, 2022, 8:25 AM

I've seen people throw out names of all these big schools out west that DJ should/could go to but I don't see how it happens. I'm pretty certain DJ wants a handshake deal that he will start at whatever school he chooses. However, I don't see a single Power 5 school willing to offer him that considering his track record of the last two years. Now if we was truly willing to compete for a job, he could go anywhere in the country he wants. But let's keep it 1000. He's already graduated and he's looking for the fastest track possible to the next level. He wants a path of least resistance. Considering he clearly has a confidence issue more than a talent issue, having to compete for a job (even though nobody wants someone afraid of competition) wouldn't be in his best interest.
He might could get what he wants at a place like Fresno State, but not a UCLA. His options are limited.

It will most likely be a package deal with his brother. It might include a guarantee to start him, which would be an interesting and potential difficult situation.

DJ has talent, but I'm not convinced that it's QB talent. A big arm by itself does not a QB make. I mean, back in the days of wooden drivers, I (a comparatively large guy) consistently hit my drives 300+ yards, but I assure you I never made the pro tour. It was an accuracy thing that I, a good golfer, could never quite overcome.
I think with DJ, we're looking at a Tebow analogy. His undeniable athletic gifts get him over a minimal bar. If he had Tebow's confidence, maybe he could match what Tebow did. But still, he's not really a QB. Not at this level.

His Track Record? you mean leading his team to a 21-5 record a bowl win and a division title (I won't give him credit for the ACC since Cade won that game for us)? You know how many teams would love to have a quarterback lead them to that kind record over two years?
For reference: Oregon State: 15-9 WSU: 14-11 UCLA: 17-7 Utah: 20-7 USC: 15-10
And thats just the pac12! I think he will be fine!

I can agree with that but lets be honest, how well would DW4 had done without mike williams, renfrow, Scott, jordan leggett? How well would TL have done without Tee, renfrow, ross for one year, rogers. DJ did not have the same receiver talent around him. I love both those guys but how many throws were they bailed out on bc of great receivers? Specifically on 50/50 balls. Hell even going back to Tajh boyd, he had watkins, hopkins, bryant, grisham, and humphries. DJ had antonio williams for 1 year?

I would agree to some extent. It isn't coincidental he throws for over 400 yards against Notre Dame his freshman year.

There is a kernel of truth in what you say. I thought the same thing for awhile. But doesn't it seem like these receivers catch better when somebody else is throwing? Try catching a 70 mph football. And his deep throws come out at such a low angle that they have no chance. You might be able to get fingertips on them but there's no way to catch them. I'm hoping these guys who looked so disappointing will now look like typical Clemson superstar receivers.
Maybe they won't, but are they that much better anywhere else? I went to Furman and Ole Miss. Wife went to Ohio State, daughter goes to ND. I watch way too much football every weekend. I even watch HS every Friday. Receiving skill is going downhill everywhere at all levels. Not sure why, but I suspect it has to do with coaches no longer being allowed to coach. This impacts receiving the most because that job attracts the most petulant and uncoachable players. Could also be because guys earn the job in HS by playing 7 on 7 instead of football.
And the other 3 guys you are talking about were all major running threats. They also exuded confidence.

The offensive talent on most of those PAC 12 teams was equal to or better than ours in terms of what you saw on the field. Maybe not the case in terms of recruiting rankings coming out of HS. We may had some pretty big whiffs lately on highly recruited receivers. Two of which don't even play for us anymore.

With all due respect, have you watched the games? There were a few where DJ played well but most of those games were won in spite of and not because of the QB. Those games were won because of the overall roster talent. If we had a top shelf QB on the roster how many more games would we have won the past two years? I think DJ is a high character person and I wish him the very best but unless he fixes whatever is wrong (and maybe a fresh start at another school will help) then he will not be a starting QB.

I have watched every game, but again like i posted to the previous reply. DJ was handicap by lesser receivers than TL, Watson, and even boyd and was still able to lead to a season most of us would have killed for in the 90's and 2000's. He obviously has a "hitch" but again he did not have the benefit of talent at receiver than the other 3.

Wonder how Cade was able to get the ball to those same receivers? Likely helped that he was on target and did not short hop the throw. When he came in they all looked a step faster and we had a 100 yard game to one receiver for the first time all year. And that includes Furman, La Tech, Ga Tech, and Miami. Simply put, some horrible teams. DJ had no big games except the mighty overtime win against a powerful Wake Forest team. To be blunt, he and Billy Lott were the two worst performing QB's we have had since I started going to the valley in 1964.

He's only 21 and has 2 years of eligibility left. Maybe he's looking for the best QB developer coaching staff he can find irrespective of their depth chart. That's the long play if you're really looking to maximize your pro potential. If he has to sit a year develop and then comes out a year later and lights it up he'll be one of the biggest stories in college football and NFL draft guys will eat it up.

DJ had Davis Allen, Jake Bringinstool. Antonio Williams, Joe Ngata and Beaux Collins. Plus Phil Mafha and Will Shipley. Not a bad set of receivers and the same ones Cade threw to Saturday night.

I hope he surprises us all by going to a school like UCLA and putting up 300 yards a game on a chip Kelly system. Dude is a qb guru and has done more with less talent. I only hope the best for DJ. It’s not his fault things didn’t work here.

Did DJ have a choice? He has 2 years somewhere to be the QB he was in high school and that first Notre dame game. Staying at Clemson would be too humiliating to bare.

I don’t think he’s getting a handshake deal and don’t think he expects or should expect one after his struggles. He’s going to have to compete for a starting spot unless he goes to a smaller subdivision school. Hopefully he is realistic about this new chapter.

You stated, “ I'm pretty certain DJ wants a handshake deal that he will start at whatever school he chooses.”
How do you know that? You have no idea what is motivating DJ.
I agree with you that DJ will have a hard time winning a starting job at a Power 5 program, but don’t presuppose what his motivations are.
Also, no coach would ever guarantee a quarterback recruit the starting job.
