Dealer installed new brake pads on the 4Runner 21k miles ago. When I took it in for the service interval, they said the rear pads are now at 6mm. This seems sus. Is it sus?

If your 4Runner uses the rear brakes for traction control, and you drive it hard, that's not surprising.

I get about 25k miles out of my F-150 rear pads for this very reason.

If she drives like my wife she’s approaching stop lights at 45 miles per hour and initiating a 45-0 stop about 6 feet behind the car in front of her

4runners are pretty well known for having calipers that lock up.

A partially frozen caliper will do what you describe.

Used to be that youd go thru 2-3 sets of front pads

In the amount of time that 1 set of rears lasted. That seems to be ancient history now. I think traction control is part of it but I swear that they’re apportioning the brake bias rearward in modern cars and the smaller rear rotors and pads just don’t last as long as a result.

Well, I must confess that I am a parts store owner. Our sales of brake pads are not disproportionately rear over front. If anything they hover about 50/50. I tend to believe it’s how hard drivers apply them and how late they wait to apply them. My wife also waits until she can read the renewal sticker on license plates before braking. Also, sales tactics at dealerships are known to be suspect, especially upselling parts you don’t need.
