Different kind of hunting experience with crossbow

Couldn’t stay awake the first hour- opened eyes with coyote coming straight to my stand. Really lucky to get off a shot as he got 10 yards from me and was almost to the point I would need to stand up. Hour and a half later - caught a movement almost straight behind me and it was 2 more playing with each other. Not little puppies- looked as big as wolves but were going in circles and then lying on the ground nipping at each other like you would expect dogs to do in your backyard. They were so distracted that they allowed me to stand up, brace myself and get off a shot at 40 yards- wonder why I saw no deer?

Is it open season on coyotes? I hear them sometimes at night 20 miles from downtown Atlanta.

Can hunt them year round- 24 hours a day- sometimes there are so many yipping and howling that it is spooky to get down from the deer stand

I can call public land ( pressured turkeys ) gobblers to the gun. I promise you that’s tough. But coyotes outsmart me every time.

I have never seen any as careless as these 3 were- maybe because no activity on the property to speak of since January.

First one dropped in his tracks and second ran in circles yipping after a solid sounding hit - blood on trees and a stump before he went into thicket close to the bridge/ close to dark so I was not going back there!

Good shooting. I don’t blame you for not following. When a bunch of them get to howling as it starts getting dark it’s pretty unnerving.

Which make/model of crossbow do you use and why? I have been thinking of getting one myself. I shot a vertical bow for many years and my left hand has paid the price. Thanks for any info.

Have a Mission bow by Mathews cost about $1,000

5 years ago but worth it. Had a much cheaper one by Barnett but had lots of trouble with it. Mission bow is very accurate- test fired it at indoor range of dealer in Greenwood and salesman said he was lucky he removed the bolt from my first shot because the second one hit the exact same spot- didn’t take any convincing me to buy it after that

Thanks. I didn’t know Mathew’s made crossbows. I was looking at the Wicked Ridge with the decocking mechanism. Know anything about those?

You took 2 fawn killers out. Good shooting. Hopefully they were both females.

No- I decock mine by shooting a target bolt at my Block crossbow target- the only practice I get- with the scope, it is so accurate that there is no need to practice - haven’t shot mine since last September until those coyotes showed up today

Good work. Coyotes are definitely reducing the numbers of gobblers and deer. I kill them every time I get the chance on my farm.

We have A LOT of them in Barnwell County, but rarely see them. I hear them a lot. We’ve trapped 4 of them and they were Yuge for coyotes.

Some years ago, during one of DNR dog drive hunts at the bomb plant, I killed two coyotes and they were BIG. There are a BUNCH of them radioactive critters in Barnwell LOL.
