Behind Enemy Lines: Q&A with a Virginia Tech writer

No. 2 Clemson squares off against No. 12 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, Saturday night in an early-season ACC showdown. With that mind, TigerNet agreed to a Q&A with a Virginia Tech website, The Key Play. Photo by Jason Vinlove / USATODAY

I like our chances, but still feel nervous about this one.

Sep 28, 2017, 1:10 PM

Anyone else nervous? I mean, Virginia Tech isn't an Auburn team, nor are they world beaters. However, they could be on a down year and still hang around for four quarters. They're traditionally a team that does not tire quickly, nor do they roll over regardless of score. They could be down by 35 points and will find a way to sneak back into the game. We have to be careful with this one, and if they don't lose another one then we will see them again during the Conference Title game. This game has playoff implications to it.

GO TIGERS!

Our country won't go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won't be any America because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race.

I am nervous, but optimistic. I am glad that the weather is going to be a lot cooler than this past Saturday. It was nasty out and I don't blame them for looking a little sluggish. I was EXTRA sluggish, and we had the shade from about 4:45 on.

I cannot believe that their writer predicted Clemson winning. That usually doesn't happen, but I guess it just means he is a realist. It's definitely going to be a tough one, but I think (and hope!) we will be ok.

I am ready to see some crazy Etienne and Feaster runs, but I know that Fuller and Choice have a lot to do with their production, so I will not discount them in any way. :)

GOOOOO TIGERS!!! Beat the Hokies!!!

I'm extremely nervous about this game. I'm usually not the most optimistic (unfortunately), but for some reason I've just had a bad feeling for a while about this game.

I agree with your concerns, Virginia Tech is a legit team. They are more complete than any we've seen so far. I think that Va. Tech would wipe the floor with Auburn.

The good side is that we're more talented and deeper. I expect a slow start in the 1st...but as the rust comes off, a resounding finish.

I'm not so sure that VT would wipe Auburn off the field, the best defense they've played is Old Diminion.

I'm not nervous too much, Clemson plays better on the rd & will be out to prove something. 42-17 Clemson

If a "rail" at TOTS is like a "Rail shot", then it is all the spilled liquor into the bar rail. Do not recommend falling for this advice.

In three years. Good looking out, man. I have found that people generally pay attention when the quiet guy speaks.

About the divisions - I still say the ACC should

Sep 28, 2017, 2:43 PM

switch 2 teams ( 1 team from each division - the permanent rivals) to the other division each year. That way every team would play each other at least 2 times every 7 years (once when each team switches divisions). This also would set up possible Clemson - FSU championship games twice every 7 years when they switch.

Completely disagree with Coogan's assessment of Jackson versus Evans (as passers). Evans struggled mightily with his throwing mechanics (poor footwork, didn't square his shoulders as much as he should have) which made his accuracy on the mid to long range passes not so good. Jackson, on the other hand, has much better mechanics and has more touch than Evans. What Evans had was some size and some pretty good wiggle when running the ball. Jackson isn't a statue but he's not a runner per se. Jackson also has a much better football IQ than Evans. Probably the result of being a college coach's son.

Here's where I see it. Jackson has not faced a good defense as of yet. He may end up doing ok but that remains to be seen. The best defense he has faced is WVA and they play in the Big 12 where defenses are not allowed. His O-line better be able to protect him and leaving only five in to protect against Clemson's front 4 is a big mistake. Everyone of Clemson's D-line (DL and DE) require a double team most plays. so at least 6 is required to give the QB enough time to get rid of the ball. Clemson's LB's are as fast as the DB's and will hit like a DE. So good luck sneaking a TE out in the flats or over them middle. Go Tigers.

Watch how many times Fuentes tries to spread us out and Jackson take off up the middle. It's a staple of this so called wizard's approach so far at VPI.

Disagree with Coogan on Tiger and VT score. Bud Foster is a great DC, but WVU and ECU scored 24 and 17 respectively Don't know if 2s and 3s playrd, but it's doubtful they've seen a spread with power running like our Tigers. We will score in the 30s, but the won't. Call it 31-14.

I don't think they score 2 touchdowns on our D. I'm taking 35-13.

I say they have 1 drive early in the game and then get shut out until our backups take the field, if they do take the field. That's pretty much how every game has gone so far. Every team has had one impressive drive near the beginning of the game. Some assisted with penalties but that's pretty much how it's gone. I think after that the defense settles down and plays really tough until the backups come in. Even with the backups its going to be hard to drive against this defense. Go Tigers.

Despite Foster's desire to stop the run first, I hope we run

Sep 28, 2017, 6:02 PM

and keep at it alternating Feaster and Etienne with occasional Choice. It may take awhile, but I think the run game will be successful with occasional passes. Then again, Overton needs to be targeted more often and allow him to become the new Mike Williams!

They will play man to man on the outside ...and uh oh if they stay that way into the 2nd half .
Offensive line needs to play a great game , KB will need some time .
Renfrow and Cain could potentially have very big games .
