Defense disappointment

I remember in 2021 thinking “if we just had average QB play we’d be in the playoff.” The deal this offseason was average-good offense and an elite defense, and that it would be enough to get in. The offense did its job overall in improving to that level. The defense, which some thought might be the best in college football, absolutely did not. I thought we would be so dominant up front that teams would be forced into stressful passing situations—that didn’t happen. It’s easy to point at the offense, but the defense arguably disappointed more when compared to expectations

Here are the reasons you’re likely to hear.

-Goodwin was new and learning how to be a DC. -Xavier Thomas was injured. -Brian Bresee was dealing with his sister’s illness. -The refs didn’t call holding on opposing offenses -Our secondary was young.
What did I miss?

If he wasn't our DC he'd be at OU.
Clearly he has the acumen to earn the respect of Brent Venables who is one of the best defensive minds around.
Wes was dealt a crap hand with injuries, personal life emergencies, and an offense that would frequently go 3 & out.
Way too early to make any conclusion.

We were banged up a lot at defensive line though. That has to count for something.
Also, our secondary was worse than any of us thought.
I thought Wes did a good job, all things considered. I am pretty excited about his future as our DC. Much more so than Streeter at OC.

People are allowed to call it as they see it, and as they hear it. Clemson was supposed to have a top-5 defense and they didn’t. That’s a fact

With the offensive fail the defense was bruised, battered and drained. Making the playoffs without a great qb is a rare achievement in the last few years. Although they were wounded, they took heart in the acc championship when the offense started putting points on the board.

Teams made quick passes or screen games and neutralized any speed rush or blitz. Played a lot of bend and don’t break defense but sadly broke at in opportune times. Our adjustments were late and periods when different units struggled throughout the year.

When the defense couldn’t count on the offense, I don’t care how good they are. You can’t put the defense on the field the whole #### game and expect even an elite defense to hold water.

BINGO, we would not be 11-2 if not for our defense, they scored twice against the coots too.
If we didn’t have a deep and very good defense we would have been 7-5 or 6-6. DJ not performing to his abilities hung our defense on the field all year long.
We had a great season because of our defense, if you are a Clemson fan you should be thankful, it’s the key to staying on top.
The coots have shown us how to be complaining nasty fans for years, they believe they are always bad & it’s exactly what they get too!

You are correct. If 30 points is not enough to win a game, the defense can certainly share the blame.

The defense was ranked 24th in the nation. Given that BV was gone, I think that is a very good showing.
The offense was ranked 54th.
If you were more disappointed in the defense this year, it is because you had wildly unrealistic expectations of the defense - and the myriad excuses for the offense are infecting your reasoning.

When your front consists of three of the top 10 defensive players who will be drafted in addition to at least 2-3 other players who will also be drafted, yet you can't consistently stop the run you have to wonder what is up with the scheme/coaching. Its obvious our defense was worse than the sum of its parts, especially up front because all those players who underperformed are still gonna get drafted. That implies people outside the program blame the lack of production on factors other than the players.

Disagree. When the O cannot score or sustain a drive
Dec 20, 2022, 10:08 AM

No matter how good your defense is, they will eventually wear down. As I told everyone while our offense struggled, a sustained drive of 4 minutes or more helps a defense. Even if your O can’t score, if they can maintain a drive for 6 mins or more, that can be at least as valuable as a field goal. Three and outs KILL your defense. Our D wasn’t perfect. But we would have certainly beat the shamecox had our O been able to make a few more first downs.

was average? QB play was terrible in those games and the first two series in Charlotte.
