Defense and BV...

It’s to late for me to look this up, but has anyone else noticed that since our blowout win against Alabama in the natty 17-18 our defense has been going down hill steadily?

It was inevitable. Wilkins, Lawrence, Ferrell, Bryant, Huggins, Isaiah Simmons, Kendall Joseph (underrated), Tre Lamar, Trayvon Mullen, AJ Terrell, Kvon Wallace and Tanner Muse were a big cut above this team.

I agree. And this year we had a lot of young guys on defense. They'll be better next year. The injuries and Covid also did not help.

this list of players sums it up - look at these players compared to what was on the field last night, and that's the answer. Alot of the current group is young and the D-lines may end up similar in stature, but the secondary....

You can't expect to have 5 professional D-lineman on your team every year. The Power Rangers were a once in a lifetime thing - especially coming back for their 4th year. Those guys dominated that year and they dominated Bama. They made the back seven look even better than they were.

Yep. It’s gone from championship caliber to a liability. Defense looked so clueless last night. Not sure if it’s scheme, adjustments or just talent but our D isn’t getting it done. Maybe we can put to rest the we too deep crap and practice tackling.

BV was distracted this week with the Auburn offer. I don't think he spent enough time on our game in preparation. Couldn't get plays in on time, everyone looked confused. Not a normal BV defense tonight. TOL

Venables secret sauce has been stealing opponents offensive signals, now everybody knows the secret and adjusted accordingly.

I don’t care how young they are... Kendrick, Zanders and Charleston are NOT going to do anything against an elite team but get embarrassed like they did last night. How many times was that big tight end just standing there wide open?? Kendrick is a joke. He’s a dream matchup for ANY decent WR.

You got to have the jimmy's and joes you can only get by so much with BV scheming and masking our issue with talent at some positions.

Here's the starting depth chart for 2018 natty vs. Bama. Compare this to what was on the field last night. High-level talent is missing right now. I "think" every player on this list except Lamar (maybe Joseph) was drafted (4 in rd1, 2 in rd2?). Other than the three DL studs, is anyone who started on d last night going to be in the NFL 5 years from now? (maybe Kendrick). Granted, alot of young talent (Booth, Trenton, Greene, etc.), but they weren't ready to be major factors

This. Over and over again this. A coach/unit has so many more options for scheme when you have talent like this. When you don’t, your options are limited.
